KOREA GIRL self titled 1997

by request

Artist Biography by Mike DaRonco

Hailing from San Jose, CA, the lineup of Tobin Mori (vocals/guitar), Elizabeth Yi (vocals/guitar), Summer (bass), and Scott Landucci (drums) was otherwise known as Korea Girl. With their lighthearted, guitar-driven indie pop and female-fronted vocals, the quartet would be critically compared to the likes of Seam, Velocity Girl, Pavement, and Lois upon the release of the band's 1998 debut EP, Reunion. But before the Asian Man Records release of their 1999 self-titled album, Korea Girl disbanded while in the recording studio. Mori went on to form the band Ee.

MAXIWAGON Calls in Sick 1996

Allmusic
Debuting in their native San Francisco, Maxiwagon quickly established themselves in the surrounding indie pop environment. With their fuse of jumpy, punk guitar riffs backed by a flow of bouncy indie pop, the lineup of Dave Bergman (vocals/guitar), Janna (bass), and Frank (drums) eventually caught the attention of Omnibus Records in 1999. That same year, Maxiwagon eventually released their first album, Call in Sick.

THE HIGH Somewhere Soon 1990

Artist Biography by

The High were instigated in Manchester, England, in October 1987 by Andy Couzens (b. 15 July 1965, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England; guitar), who had previously plied his trade in the yet-to-blossom Stone Roses. Joined by John Matthews (b. 23 September 1967, Torquay, Devon, England; vocals), Simon Davies (b. 24 January 1967, Manchester, England; bass) and Chris Goodwin (b. 10 August 1965, Oldham, Lancashire, England; drums), the High immediately eschewed the traditional paths open to small bands by avoiding the pitfalls of incessant touring. Instead, the quartet fabricated a set of unashamedly classic guitar/pop songs and signed to London Records after just one high-profile home-town show. Armed with such a simple musical formula, the High were able to work at an unusually brisk pace, releasing three singles in 1990, each of which gradually pushed the band further towards the brink of the public’s consciousness. Eventually, at the turn of the year, a remixed version of their debut, ‘Box Set Go’, worked its way up to number 28 in the UK charts, allowing them to concentrate on creating new material throughout 1991. However, along with the less worthy Northside, the High soon topped critical assassination lists in the backlash against all things ‘baggy’. The result was an almost total absence of publicity to accompany the aptly titled Hype.

ROLLERSKATE SKINNY Horsedrawn Wishes 1996

One for that rainy-day, difficult-but-rewarding pile. This Dublin trio whips up dense stormclouds of guitar and electronic "orchestration" which singer Ken Griffin seeds with evocative streams of lyric fragments. --Jeff Bateman

MAZEY FADE Secret Watchers Built the World 1994

From LastFM
Liverpool power trio who made an extraordinary racket for a couple of years back in the early nineties. John Peel famously nominated them for a Mercury Music prize in ‘93 and the band broke up in shock. Not for the faint hearted.

NEW BAD THINGS ¡Freewheel! 1995

New Bad Things Biography

by Ron DePasquale

What began as a one-off from like-minded coffee shop dwellers in Portland, OR, swelled into one of the Rose City's longest-lasting contributions to the indie rock world. David French, Luke Hollywood, Christine Denkwelter, Matthew Hattie Hein, and Mattiey Gaunt formed in 1992 to do a one-time opening gig for Sebadoh. They soon recorded a full-length record, Freewheel!, for local indie label Candy Ass Records and became a unique collective of songwriters gelling their disparate tastes into one lo-fi sometimes noisy post-punk sound. Society followed on Lissy's U.K. in 1994, and the band began to drift to a more slop pop sound. NBD released Ennui Go in 1997 and bade farewell to singer Hein, who left to pursue a solo career. An alternative-takes record, C-sides, was released in 1999. French later departed to play in Wallpaper.

FROGPOND Count to Ten 1996

1997 brought Frogpond to Pensacola where they packed Sluggo's so tightly we were all smashed against each other. They rocked the place so much everyone was jumping up and down. The next day my neck and legs were so sore from dancing in my combat boots but it was all worth it.
