ZIPGUN Baltimore 1993

Punk rock band from Seattle, Washington. Formed in 1991 by former Derelicts guitarist Neil Rodgers and former Obituaries drummer Dan Cunneen. Blake Edwards of Empty Records saw one of Zipguns rehearsals and immediately asked the band to do a single.

In 1993, Mark Wooten quit the band and was replaced by bassist Andy Sheen. In late 1993 Sheen quit the band and was replaced by former Derelicts bassist Ian Dunsmore.

ZIPGUN broke up in 1994 and then reunited in 1996 for a single show at The Breakroom in Seattle with original bassist, Mark Wooten.

Zipgun released three singles and two full-length albums on Pacific Northwest independent record label, Empty Records and several other singles on various labels. The band toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada and appeared in the Doug Pray film Hype!, a documentary chronicling the 1990s Seattle Grunge music scene.

Currently, Rogers plays in Communist Eyes and The Derelicts (reformed in 2017). Clarke continues to play and record with the Seattle punk band The Burnz. Cunneen plays drums for Roxbury Saints and the Perkins Coie Band.

SWEET WATER self titled 1993

Biography

by Chris True
A Seattle, WA based band that got rolling just as that city's musical revolution of the early 1990s was taking hold -- their first show happened to be with a band (also making its first live appearance) named Mookie Blaylock, who would go on to find a bit of success as Pearl Jam -- Sweet Water managed to ply their trade through the waning years of the alt rock movement before being felled by the dreaded "hiatus" in 1999. Originally known as S.G.M., Sweet Water rode the wave of interest in the Pacific Northwest's musical offerings, and landed a major-label deal with Atlantic in 1992. The self-titled offering (not their first, however. The band put forth an independent release called Ter in 1990.) was a moderate success, but nowhere near that of other acts from the scene, i.e., » Read more

SMACK DAB Majestic Root 1994

By request

SMACK DAB
This quirky Brooklyn combo was formed at the urging of Wm. Berger (here playing drums), who recognized creative sparkle in modern dancer Linda Hagood and encouraged her to take up guitar and songwriting. The duo was joined by bassist Alec Stephens on Queen Crab, a wonderful collection of light, idiosyncratic material like "Big Planet," "Lucky" and "Dancing Uvula." With a cartoony Southern voice so high-pitched that many reckoned it to be contrived (it's not), Hagood fits in with the love rock of Beat Happening and the Mad Scene but shows more musical ambition. Contributions to tribute albums for the Fall and Love around this time showed Smack Dab's versatility and humor.

After Berger left to concentrate on Uncle Wiggly, newcomer J. Z. Barrell (ex-Alter Boys) brought his studio engineering prowess and add instrumental versatility to the fuller, more mature Majestic Root. Where Queen Crab was a fanciful one-woman show with excellent support, Majestic Root shows Hagood's positive reflections on love and life in a more adult light, with subdued tones and more intricate arrangements. The agile band covers a great deal of sultry, arty and troubled ground under her indelible stylistic stamp. Stephens exited Smack Dab in 1994 for a career slinging guitar with Railroad Jerk and was suitably replaced by Kansas City's Jeffrey J. Jensen, a Jonathan Richman fanatic.

Confusingly, there is an eponymous 2007 album by a second group called Smack Dab, this one an unrelated trio containing Spanish musician Paco Loco, Steve Wynn and his wife and drummer, Linda Pitmon.

Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Alameda, CA-based indie-pop duo Ciao Bella teamed singers/songwriters Mario Hernandez and Jamie McCormick, longtime friends who first joined forces under the name Teeny Hi-Fi for a 1992 single, "Weekend Go." Appearing live on only the rarest of occasions, the duo spent the next several years collaborating in their home studio, finally releasing their first material as Ciao Bella on a 1996 EP on the Winnipeg-based Endearing label. The full-length 1 followed on March Records in 1997, earning the band a worshipful following among indie-pop fanatics, but after a handful of subsequent compilation tracks Ciao Bella went on hiatus; McCormick went on to produce sessions for acts including the Aislers Set and the Fairways, while Hernandez recorded under the alias From Bubblegum to Sky

U.S. SAUCER Hell Yes! 1997

By request

Biography

by Greg Prato

U.S. Saucer's sleepy brand of rock is a mix of Red Red Meat's raw production and slurred vocals, with Morphine's sense of the experimental and the unconventional. Whereas Morphine is a trio without a guitarist, U.S. Saucer is a trio without a drummer.

The San Francisco-based band (which consists of singer/bassist David Tholfsen, singer/guitarist Margaret Murray, and Brian Hageman on guitar, vocals, and viola) produces an original take on blues/country/folk. Although Tholfsen's vocals certainly are an acquired taste (a mix of moaning and yodeling), music fans searching for the cutting edge and the uncommon will be in for a pleasant surprise. The band has released a total of three full-length albums for Amarillo Records -- 1992's My Company Is Misery, 1994's Tender Places Come from Nothing, and 1997's Hell, Yes! -- and have also appeared on a handful of compilations for small labels in countries such as Germany and Canada.

Artist Biography by

Toenut play a unique brand of rhythmically complex, experimental alternative rock topped off by the unearthly vocals Katie Walters. Atlanta natives Skipper Hartley and Richie Edelson sowed the seeds of the group back in 1991. Toenut recorded their debut single, Heyward/Information, for Half Baked Records in 1993. The track drew the interest of famed indie producer Kramer, who allowed the band to use his Noise New Jersey studio to record a demo. Through Kramer, the group met producer Steve Watson, who would become an important collaborator. Mute Records signed Toenut in 1994. The group's lineup was still in flux, however, particularly in the drummer position. Jeff Sullivan (Drivin' n' Cryin') had played frequently with the group, but Toenut, needing a more steady member, enlisted Colin English, who would become the band's sixth drummer. The demo recorded at Kramer's studio was tweaked and released as the group's debut LP, Information, in 1995. The group's sophomore effort, Two in the Pinata, came out in 1997. That same year, Toenut suffered a tragedy: on April 5, bassist Chris Collins was on his way to a show in Athens, GA, when he was killed in an automobile accident.

Biography

by Steve Huey

The Rooks gained a cult following among power pop fans in the 1990s with a style drawing its main inspirations from the Beatles, Big Star, and the Replacements. Leader and co-founder Mike Mazzarella (vocals, rhythm guitar) formed the group in New York with drummer Patrick Yourell in 1990 after their previous outfit, a Connecticut band called the Broken Hearts, dissolved. An early incarnation of the Rooks featured Mazzarella's friend and fellow power-popper Richard X. Heyman, as well as Heyman's wife » Read more

THE GOOPS self titled 1994

Biography

by John Bush
The Goops were formed in 1992 by guitarist Brad Worrell and vocalist Eleanor Whitledge. After a succession of bandmembers joined and left, bassist Steve Mazur and drummer Jeff Benison climbed aboard just in time for the Goops' self-titled debut album for Blackout! Records. The punk-popsters toured with Rancid and the Offspring and followed the album with a single/comic-book package called "On the Road with the Goops." Reprise Records signed the group to its Kinetic sub-label and released second album Lucky in 1996. The Goops also have a song on the soundtrack to the film Mallrats
