SLOWDOWN VIRGINIA Dead Space 1994

Last.Fm

Slowdown Virginia (1993-1995) was an indie rock band from Omaha, Nebraska, on Lumberjack Records, the predecessor to today’s Saddle Creek records. Slowdown Virginia’s birth could best be categorized as a nebulous evolution from The March Hares, (another Omaha band) when in 1993, Matt Oberst and Jim Robino parted ways with The March Hares, leaving Steve Pedersen and Tim Kasher to assume guitar and vocal duties respectively within the new group. In 1995, Slowdown Virginia disbanded and along with members of the then-defunct local Omaha band, Smashmouth, formed Cursive.

DAISY CHAINSAW Pink Flower 1992

Artist Biography by

Eleventeen
Katie Jane Garside was the quirky starlet of the U.K. band Daisy Chainsaw. Her naive stage persona of torn dresses smeared with dirt was a disturbing yet enchanting look into the punk-pop four-piece who had a short-lived spot in alternative music. Joining Garside was bassist Richard Adams, drummer Vince Johnson, and guitarist Crispin Grey, and together the band made their debut with 1991's LoveSickPleasure EP. One Little Indian took notice, signing the band and issuing Daisy Chainsaw's full-length studio effort Eleventeen the following year. Garside left the band soon afterwards, citing difficulty with the pressures of fame. Without the passion of Garside, Daisy Chainsaw was no longer impressive. Grey attempted to keep things going with the 1995 lackluster follow-up You're Gruesome, but the demise of the band was long overdue and Daisy Chainsaw disappeared. Garside resurfaced in the new millennium, again joining forces with Grey for Queen Adreena

WALT MINK El Producto 1996

by request

Review by

Walt Mink's third album returns the band to the green pastures of their debut; it's full of good pop songs and sounds as if John Kimbrough had less on his mind than on the self-produced second album, Bareback Ride. More free time in the studio gave Walt Mink -- and producer John Agnello -- a chance to play with production techniques, resulting in some playful experimentalism on several tracks. Most songs, however, are strictly saccharine with Kimbrough's occasionally whiny vocals being the only negative to pop nirvana.

SHOULD Feed Like Fishes 1998

Artist Biography by

A Folding Sieve
Austin, Texas shoegaze/dream pop group Should were formed in the early '90s by brothers Marc and Eric Ostermeier, and Tanya Maus. Originally named shiFT (they switched when they ran across another band with the same name), the trio recorded its hazy, dreamy pop in a unique fashion using guitar loops, samplers, and distortion derived from overloading an old four-track mixer. Their first EP, A Folding Sieve, a six-song record released under the shiFT moniker on the ND label, came out in 1995 and was followed in 1997 by the "Own Two Feet" 7”, also on ND. Their second album, Feed Like Fishes, was released in 1998 by the Minneapolis-based Words on Music label. The band ceased recording after this, though Words on Music issued a new version of A Folding Sieve that added bonus tracks made up of previously unreleased songs and covers of songs by 18th Dye and the Jean Paul Sartre Experience. In 2010 the band resurfaced as a duo minus Eric Ostermeier and released a new album, Like a Fire Without Sound, for Words on Music. Soon after, A Folding Sieve was tapped to be part of Captured Tracks Shoegaze Archives series and was reissued in 2011 with an additional two bonus tracks. The label also released a cassette, Resonate, that was a reissue of a cassette released by shiFT on Whirlingpool Records in 1993.
