Artist Biography

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Featuring singer/guitarist Greg Mora, bassist Mark Higa, guitarist Joey Rubenstein and drummer Rocco Bidlovski, Fluorescein is a punk-pop quartet from the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, California. All four members were active on the local alternative rock scene before getting together in the mid-'90s. Mora was Lutefisk's bassist; Higa played in the Space Twins; Rubenstein played in 60 Cycle Hum; and Bidlovski was part of 100 Mona Lisas. The group's debut album, High Contrast Comedown, was comprised entirely of original material by Mora and was produced by Mora and Tracy Chilsholm. The record was released on No Name Recordings in January 1997. Over the course of 1997, the group promoted the record through constant touring. By the end of the year, "Cathy's On Crank!" became a hit on modern rock stations in several major markets. The group's burgeoning success attracted major labels, and DGC Records signed the band by the end of the year. High Contrast Comedown was reissued by DGC in January of 1998.

60 CYCLE 60 Cycle 1996

60 Cycle was an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, United States, formed in 1993. The band's line-up included founder and principal songwriter Joey Rubenstein (lead vocals, guitar), Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar, backing vocals), Glen Vagas (bass guitar,), and Kelli Scott (drums).

60 Cycle developed a style of power pop/punk music and was known for its unique melodic song craft and tight live performances. Before disbanding in 1996, the group released one self-titled record produced by Josh Abraham. The band contributed a song titled "Strapper" to the soundtrack of the 1998 film Boogie Boy starring Joan Jett and Traci Lords.

After the group's demise, Van Leeuwen and Scott went on to tour with the band Failure while Rubenstein joined the group Fluorescein. Both of these outfits garnered major label recording contracts and moderate touring success. Rubenstein later developed a career as a composer for film and television while Van Leeuwen went on to play with notable acts such as A Perfect Circle and Queens of the Stone Age.
