Terrifying Experience Biography

by Mike DaRonco

After parting ways with the seminal Guided By Voices in 1996, guitarist Mitch Mitchell wanted to take the opportunity of writing and recording his own music. So without any assistance from additional musicians, Mitchell went into the studio, recorded all the instrumental tracks by himself, layered the vocals and released it as a split EP with Illyah Kuryahkin in 1996 -with a little help from Arena Rock Records; hence, Terrifying Experience was born. Not to long after the record sold out, Mitchell wanted to take things a step further by recruiting an actual band; resulting in the 1997 line up of guitarist Duane Hart, bassist Geoff Ortlip and drummer Mark Craigo, Terrifying Experience quickly followed with their second seven inch (first release as a band), "I'm Invisible" b/w "Legacy of Conquest" and the Search for Omega Minus EP -both courtesy of AAJ Records. With a local following developed in their home quarters of Dayton, Ohio, Terrifying Experience felt the confidence for a 1998 US tour, after the release of their first full-length Supreme Radial that same year.

GEM Hexed 1995

Artist Biography by

Gem is a guitar-driven pop-rock band with explicit connections to Cobra Verde and Guided By Voices. After launching Cobra Verde (out of the ashes of the Cleveland group Death of Samantha) with singer/guitarist John Petkovic and Dave Swanson in the early '90s, guitarist Doug Gillard formed the side project Gem with Prisonshake drummer Scott Pickering and Four Coyotes guitarist Tim Tobias. The group debuted with the album Hexed in 1995. In 1997, Gillard and the rest of Cobra Verde backed up Robert Pollard as a de facto Guided By Voices lineup for the Mag Earwig album. Gillard would remain with Guided By Voices in subsequent years, with Gem member Tim Tobias joining up with Pollard as well (on bass). The two Gem members were important components of the relatively stable GBV lineup that existed from the late '90s and on into the new millenium (and that played on the landmark Isolation Drills album). In 2001, Tobias and Gillard once again turned their attentions to Gem with the album Sunglare Serenades.

Artist Biography by

Bee Thousand
Dayton, OH-based lo-fi pop duo Swearing at Motorists teamed singer/guitarist Dave Doughman and drummer Don Thrasher, the latter a member of local heroes Guided by Voices at their Bee Thousand-era peak. Debuting in 1995 with a self-released, self-titled cassette, Swearing at Motorists returned the following year with an EP, Tuesday's Pretzel Night. The full-length Fear of Low Flying Clouds appeared in 1997, with More Songs from the Mellow Struggle (the band's debut effort for the Secretly Canadian label) and Number Seven Uptown both following two years later. By 2000, founding member Don Thrasher left the band. The Trouble with Sweeney's Joseph Siwinski was brought in to play drums. The Along the Incline Plane EP and the This Flag Signals Goodbye album both followed in 2002. A tour with the Hold Steady as well as an appearance at the annual SXSW conference coincided the release of Last Night Becomes This Morning in 2006. After an 8 year gap, the band returned with a full-length, While Laughing, The Joker Tells the Truth, in 2014.

TOBIN SPROUT

Carnival Boy
1996

Moonflower Plastic (Welcome to My Wigwam)
1997

Artist Biography by

Despite his own solo successes, Tobin Sprout will probably always be known as the one-time four-track wizard and songwriting side kick to Robert Pollard in Ohio's lo-fi pop kings Guided By Voices. Though less prolific than his boss, fans of the group were quick to take note of Sprout's irresistible song craft. Relegated to a handful of appearances on each release, the singer/guitarist penned GBV favorites like "Awful Bliss," "Atom Eyes," and "It's Like Soul Man." Sprout left the GBV camp in 1997, pursuing the solo career he launched a year earlier with Carnival Boy. Born in 1955, Tobin Sprout began playing guitar at age eight, teaching himself on the Silvertone his parents purchased for 25 dollars. In his late twenties, Sprout began making his first appearances on a Dayton, OH, scene dominated by metal acts, cover bands, and the occasional coalition of fiery punk youth, with his band Fig.4. Formed in 1983 with bassist Dan Toohey and drummer Jon Peterson, the group only released one 7" during its existence, breaking up before completing their full-length debut. After the split, Sprout enlisted the help of Dayton resident Robert Pollard to finish the album. A frequent attendee at Fig.4 shows, Pollard's early offer to join the group was (rather ironically) rejected. Needing an outlet for his own growing backlog of compositions, Pollard formed Guided By Voices shortly after. The band's Forever Since Breakfast EP was released in 1986, followed by the full-length Devil Between My Toes a year later. Sprout continued to stay in touch, adding his guitar to a couple of tracks on Devil, but eventually moved to Florida, taking a job as a designer and illustrator for See magazine.
