Hillbilly Frankenstein formed in Athens, Georgia in 1988 as a side, just-for-kicks project of Guadalcanal Diary. Initially a rockabilly and country cover band, the group quickly began writing originals spanning '60's garage, surf, big band, early jazz, gospel, and zydeco.

LAVA LOVE Whole Lava Love 1990

Artist Biography by

An unfairly unknown Atlanta quintet of the early '90s, Lava Love mix '60s influences (including the sort of Byrds-like jangly guitars and neo-psychedelic haze that all Georgia indie bands were required by law to adopt after R.E.M. showed up) with a post-punk aggression and a wicked sense of humor, recording two hard-to-find but utterly delightful albums in the process. The group formed in Atlanta in the late '80s, with the key songwriting members, singer Esta Hill, guitarist Drew Cavins, and bassist Paul Bracken, adding keyboardist Diana "Cookie" Brindle and drummer Nathan Robbins to complete the lineup. A single, "Perfect Gurl," came out in early 1990, followed by the Mitch Easter-produced Whole Lava Love on the local indie Sky Records later that year. A follow-up, Aphrodisia, came out in 1992, but the band split shortly thereafter. Hill and Brindle joined Hillbilly Frankenstein, a psychobilly band fronted by Guadalcanal Diary's Jeff Walls. Cavins became a restaurateur, opening a popular grill in Atlanta's Five Points neighborhood.
