Founded by Sushil Dade of Soup Dragons and former 18 Wheeler David Keenan (and, for a while, including ex-Teenage Fanclub drummer Brendan O’Hare in its ever-changing lineup), Glasgow’s Telstar Ponies fell somewhere between the atmospheric goth of Independent Project Records releases and the prolonged indulgence of freeform improvisation. The US-only Mors Factum Musica conveys something of their breadth, with the straightforward rock of “Lugengeschicte” sharing plastic with 13 minutes of Pink Floyd dynamism in “Does Your Heart Have Wings?”

Shortly before taking a two-year hiatus, the Ponies managed to make a double album without overindulgence or a complete reckoning of what they can do. Voices From the New Music stretches from the deep, despairing pangs of David Keenan’s vocals and guitar on “Last Outpost” (reminiscent of Savage Republic member Thom Furman’s solo work as Autumnfair) to the piano-and-drone creepiness of “Aegis Falling” and the desperado whistling on “The Fall of Little Summer.” Telstar Ponies find a snug corner on where goth angst need not be drenched in absurd theatrics or uninspired songform.[Ben Goldberg]

18 WHEELER Formanka 1995

Artist Biography by

Scotland's 18 Wheeler was an overlooked and often critically bashed alternative pop/rock band. Formed by Sean Jackson (vocals, guitar), David Keenan (guitar, vocals), Alan Hake (bass), and Neil Halliday (drums) in the early '90s, 18 Wheeler shared their compatriots Teenage Fanclub's affection for Big Star's immaculate guitar pop, as well as the country-rock of Gram Parsons and the golden harmonies of the Beach Boys. However, 18 Wheeler's influences were obvious and the U.K. press dismissed them as pale imitators. In 1994, Keenan split from 18 Wheeler after recording a handful of singles and started his own group, the Telstar Ponies; he was replaced by guitarist Steven Haddow. 18 Wheeler also released their first album, Twin Action, on Creation Records that year. Twin Action was followed by Formanka a year later. Creation dropped the band after 1997's Year Zero, which found the group experimenting with dance rhythms to modernize their sound.
