Dub Narcotic Sound System Biography by Jason Ankeny

The oddball indie-funk collective Dub Narcotic Sound System was spearheaded by vocalist Calvin Johnson, the former frontman of the legendary Beat Happening as well as the founder of the famed K Records label. Named in honor of Johnson's own Olympia, WA-based basement studio Dub Narcotic, the project was begun in 1994 with a rapid-fire series of funk-, rap-, and reggae-influenced singles including "Bite," "Fuck Shit Up," "Booty Run," and "Shake-a-Puddin'"; from the outset Johnson was the group's sole constant member, although over the course of subsequent releases, including the EPs Industrial Breakdown, Ridin' Shotgun, and Ship to Shore, the revolving lineup grew to include Olympia scenesters like Lois Maffeo as well as Larry Butler, Todd Ranslow, and Brian Weber, all three members of the hip-hop unit Dead Presidents. The first Dub Narcotic Sound System full-length, Rhythm Record, Vol. One: Echoes From the Scene Control Room, appeared in 1995; later efforts included 1996's Boot Party and 1998's Out of Your Mind. Sideways Soul, a collaboration with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, followed in 1999.

Biography

by Mike DaRonco

Taking a break from her full time gig singing for Mecca Normal, Jen Smith got together with Dead C guitarist Michael Morley and drummer/ pianist Peter Jefferies to form 2 Foot Flame in 1995. Jokingly dubbed as an "experimental super group, " the band took a hold of as many noises they could grasp and beat out of their instruments to record their self-titled album not too long after getting together. Their second full-length "Ultra Drowning" followed in 1997.

SOLID FROG Supercoat 1995

Biography

by Steve Bekkala

By melding together a tightly wound post-grunge sound with the decidedly more unpopular flavor (for the time) of late-'70s/early-'80s hard rock, Solid Frog was one of the most inimitable groups to arise from the Ann Arbor area in the early to mid-'90s. Comprised of guitarist/lead vocalist Andy Patalan, lead guitarist Kyle Neely, bassist Jeff Hayes, and drummer Mike Purcell, the band released their first album, Supercoat, on the local Overture Records label in 1995. Assisted by regional radio support for the single "Standard Day," the group began to build a following and gig steadily in the area, with occasional jaunts to the East and West Coasts. Their sophomore album, Pepper Spray, followed in 1997, at which point the group decided to start shopping their wares to various major labels by playing showcases and snagging opening slots for national acts. Unfortunately, the bubblegum pop and nu-metal that began to dominate the airwaves during this time was not in tune with Solid Frog's … » Read more

Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Pluto's eponymous first album is an accomplished set of commercial alternative rock, featuring anthemic choruses, surprisingly folk-rock song structures, and the occasional grunge guitar. Pluto has the formula down pat and they often have catchy hooks, but they don't sound like they have anything to say. Consequently, Pluto is more admirable for its sound than its substance.

MISTLE THRUSH Silt 1995

by request

Review

by Jack Rabid
Boston's Mistle Thrush used to sound like a U.S. Slowdive on their Agus Amárach EP. But even then, they were still highly enjoyable, as the vocal talents of the gifted Valerie Forgione lifted them into a special category. Silt, their debut LP, finds her elegant pipes being added to a much more broad, if still entirely ethereal and celestial, palette. Imagine the Cure at their peak, circa Faith and Pornography -- in fact, "The Sky and My Hands" is vaguely like "The Hanging Garden" -- only with all the darkness and that great suffocating claustrophobia subtracted and replaced with super-pleasant, glistening textures (almost movie-soundtrack-worthy) and childlike wonder. Artist Biography by

Formed in Portland, Oregon, USA, in 1994 by former Poison Idea leader Jerry A. (b. Jerry Lang, USA; guitar/vocals), alongside his wife, May May Del Castro (bass/vocals, ex-Destroy All Blonds) and Sam Henry (drums, ex-Wipers). Poison Idea had built a reputation as the most fearsome, brutal studio and performance band of their era, but the Gift allowed Jerry A. to indulge himself in more accessible pop punk (bizarrely, including both a Bauhaus and Tones On Tail cover version). The band’s shows were just as frenetic and violent, however, with the intention being to keep the group on the road on a semi-permanent basis. They did find the time to record a well-received debut album in 1994, though it was only given worldwide release a year later. Jerry A later rejoined Poison Idea for their abortive reunion in 1998.

THE FEELINGS Dearling Darling 1997

by request

Review

by Dean Carlson

Mildly appropriating the lo-fi turmoil of emo culture, the Feelings took things in a slightly different direction for their follow-up, Dearling Darling. Rather than letting themselves brood inside bad vocals and co-dependent guitar-plucking, the band added Hammond organs, swirling electronics, and an early-'80s post-punk chug to the standard indie rock clichés. "Hemophelia" and "Banana Fandango" are formless and difficult, but "Gone" is quite good, like the Velvet Underground's "The Gift" happily reworked by the Rentals.

FABRIC Woolly Mammoth 1997

Review

by Tom Demalon

The Bloomington, Indiana trio Fabric features the talents of Tina Barbieri (ex-Mysteries of Life), guitarist Chris Kupersmith, and keyboard player Scott Ewing. Produced by the band, Woolly Mammoth is goofy fun, at its best, and a bit grating, at other times, as they tread the same eccentric, quirky pop ground as the Flaming Lips. Barbieri sounds like Liz Phair on the circus-like "Deaf Baby" and "Rubberman" is an oddly amusing track with bouncy piano and tumbling percussion. They manage to work mental health, electro-shock, and sexual repression into the lyrics of "Bring on the Girls," with Barbieri delivering the words in an eerie vocal punctuated by Kupersmith's guitar bursts. Other standouts include two cuts sung by Kupersmith. "Husband's Tale" is a wry take on the male perspective of marriage which Barbieri joins in on mid-song, and "Security," a sweet tome on loneliness, is the most obvious pop melody on the record. An intriguing album, Woolly Mammoth requires a bit of effort.

PAPA VEGAS Hello Vertigo 1999

Biography

by Vincent Jeffries
Led by guitarist/songwriter and vocalist Joel Ferguson, Papa Vegas emerged in the late '90s. They had a sound, a look, and an attitude tailored for the mainstream "alternative" masses and the media/business outlets that catered to what had become a large musical appetite for polished and melodic guitar rock. After a brief indie recording stint, Papa Vegas was welcomed with open arms to the musical stables of RCA Records, who oversaw the writing, recording, and release of the band's one and only full-length disc. The resulting interest in the group was hardly what the band or the label anticipated, and Papa Vegas promptly fell off the face of the earth. If the group was dropped from the RCA roster, or if they, in fact, broke up before the label … » Read more
