Artist Biography by

What Gives?
Seattle rock & roll ironists the Squirrels were led by singer Rob Morgan, a longtime veteran of the Pacific Northwest underground scene who previously fronted local punk legends the Fishsticks. After further honing his goofy bubblegum-punk approach with the Pudz, in 1984 Morgan formed Ernest Anyway and the Mighty, Mighty Squirrels with members of the Young Fresh Fellows; the group's 1986 debut Sing the Hits of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates/Five Virgins juxtaposed renditions of material by the aforementioned Kidd with covers of psych-era hits like "Spirit in the Sky" and "Hair." As the Young Fresh Fellows' own notoriety grew, Morgan was forced to assemble a new lineup, dubbed the New Age Urban Squirrels; subsequent incarnations included Squirrels Group '87, Ron Voyage and the New Squirrels, and finally, around the 1990 release of What Gives?, simply the Squirrels. Two years later, the group issued a Christmas album, Son of Snowman/Don't Fear the Snowman, followed in 1993 by Harsh Toke of Reality. In the wake of the Scrapin' the Hits retrospective, Morgan disbanded the Squirrels in late 1997, but a year later teamed with keyboardist Tom Morrison to record a new track for a Sparks tribute LP; the project ultimately resulted in the formation of a new Squirrels lineup which issued the Pink Floyd potshot The Not-So-Bright Side of the Moon in 2000.

THE SCREAMING TRIBESMEN Blood Lust 1990

Artist Biography by

Singer/songwriter and guitarist Mick Medew formed the Screaming Tribesmen in Brisbane, Australia, in late 1981. The band's current lineup coalesced around 1986: Medew, guitarist Chris "Klondike" Masuak, bassist Bob Wackley and drummer Warwick Fraser. Several Australian number one singles caused a favorable reaction in U.S. college charts; consequently, the gritty pop/rock quartet signed to Rykodisc and released their domestic debut, Bones + Flowers

ATHENAEUM Athenaeum 1995

Athenaeum Biography by Andrew Leahey

Athenaeum enjoyed minor success in the late '90s, when the alternative rock group cracked the Billboard Hot 100 with "What I Didn't Know." Formed in Greensboro, NC, the band was primarily the brainchild of singer/guitarist Mark Kano and drummer Nic Brown, although Kano proved to be the only constant member throughout the group's career. Guitarist Gary Brewster and bassist Alex McKinney eventually climbed aboard, and Athenaeum self-released an eponymous LP in 1995. Shortly thereafter, the quartet signed with Atlantic Records and issued 1998's Radiance, which expanded the band's audience and allowed Athenaeum to tour for several years.

With newcomer Jeremy Vogt replacing Nic Brown (who left the band in 2000 to attend college), Athenaeum released a self-titled sophomore album in September 2001. The record failed to ignite much interest, and by the end of the year, Atlantic had dropped the band from its roster. Still a fairly popular draw in North Carolina, Athenaeum continued touring and released a rarities compilation, Hourglass, before officially calling it quits in 2004.

DIGGER Powerbait 1996

Artist Biography by

Powerbait
The Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania-based pop-punk trio Digger comprised singer/guitarist Chris Benner, bassist Matt Gregorac and drummer Mike "Maniac" Fisher. After coming to the attention of California's Hopeless Records in 1996 following a live radio performance on WMUH-NJ, the band inked a deal with the label and made their debut the following year with the LP Powerbait. Rounds of touring took place before the group returned in 1998 with The Promise of an Uncertain Future; Monte Carlo appeared in early 2000. The EP Trainwreck was issued in May 2001, and Digger followed up late the next year with the full-length Keystone. In early 2003, the band was forced to cancel its nationwide tour in support of the record when bassist Ben Stephens and guitarist Garrett Hoskins suddenly left to pursue other interests; Benner and then-drummer Mike Kelly instead looked for replacements. Tattoo Broken Hearts EP, which included several live tracks, arrived in April 2003 via Italy's Wynona Records and soon after Digger announced new members Warren Cooke (bass) and Tim Wright (guitar) joining on. Touring followed, and though some random new songs appeared online as well, Digger officially announced its dissolution in the summer of 2004.

LEAD INTO GOLD Chicks & Speed: Futurism 1990

by request

Artist Biography by

Lead into Gold derives its name from the mystical practice of alchemy. The band is basically a solo project for Paul Barker, a talented and avant-garde bassist who joined forces with Alain Jourgensen in the late '80s to create several influential and powerful Ministry records. Paul and Roland Barker, as well as frequent future collaborator Bill Rieflin, played in a Seattle-based band called the Blackouts. When the Blackouts inked with Wax Trax! Jourgensen (already operating under the Ministry moniker) immediately partnered with Barker and the pair unleashed a multitude of vehicles including RevCo, 1000 Homo DJs, and Lard. Jourgensen and Barker dubbed themselves Hypo Luxa and Hermes Pan (respectfully and respectively) after a pair of free-wheeling Greek prostitutes. In the midst of this plethora of pounding, Lead into Gold emerged as Barker's baby. He wrote and sang each cut on the sole full-length Age of Reason, as well as the extended singles, Faster Than Light, Idiot, and Chicks and Speed: Futurism.
