Artist Biography

by Stewart Mason

Cerebral Corps was a one-off collaboration between Bay Area singer/songwriters Jeff Saltzmann and Bob Vickers. Their sole album, 1992's Attributed to Cerebral Corps, was recorded in an unorthodox fashion. Over the course of one evening, Saltzmann and Vickers recorded the vocal, guitar, and keyboard tracks for an album's worth of songs. Then the pair invited various musician friends to overdub drums, bass, backing vocals, pedal steel, and various percussion and string instruments onto the existing tracks. The resulting album is a quirky piece of art rock that merits comparisons to Brian Eno's early solo work. Saltzmann moved to New York and went on to a fruitful career as a producer and engineer for various indie rockers; he is also, believe it or not, considered an authority on antique street lights and lamp posts among those who collect information about and pictures of such things. More prosaically, Vickers joined the Orange Peels

SEE SEE RIDER See See Rider EP 1990

Discogs

See See Rider were an indie rock group formed in East Kilbride, Scotland, active between 1989 and 1992.
One of the most mysterious and intriguing bands of the late 80’s and early 90’s See See Rider released only two singles - the first was a self titled four track EP featuring the gorgeous 'She Sings Alone.’ Their second was a brooding love song called ‘Stolen Heart.’ The singles were released on Lazy Records a label that had earlier success with releases by The Primitives and My Bloody Valentine. Both See See Rider singles were best sellers in the indie charts, but as the only legacy of a band who were tipped for big things in the NME it’s an unsatisfying catalogue.

NME The band comprised Stephen Sands, May Rock Marshall, Phil King, Pete Tweedie and Lewis Chamberlain. Stephen and May were the songwriting partnership who had established the band in London after moving from their hometown East Kilbride. It was the East Kilbride connection that led to Douglas Hart of the Jesus and Mary Chain later featuring on the song See See.

FURRY THINGS The Big Saturday Illusion 1995

Discogs

Big Saturday Illusion Review

by Ned Raggett

After some fine single and compilation cuts, including the ridiculously great "Still California," which appears here, Furry Things achieved both a full band lineup and a fantastic overall debut with Big Saturday Illusion. Like many American indie groups of the '90s, the quartet's debt to fuzz pedal abusers such as My Bloody Valentine and the Flaming Lips was plenty clear throughout the album. Happily the group avoided sounding like just another knockoff, with a good balance of garage-level crash and bash and fried psychedelic feedback topped off with sometimes wispy, sometimes softly drawling vocals. Big Saturday hints at big ambitions without sounding full of itself, even on the biggest track of all, the heavy Krautrock megajam "Nothing From Zero." Opening cut "Introism" is also notable, oddly enough, for its ending: soft piano parts regularly interrupted by the dying remnants of feedback from the main song. Elsewhere there's instances of completely going over the edge; one cut, with its near painful metallic, shimmering loop of feedback, sounds like a fine early Electric Company outtake (making Brad Laner's future work with the group all the more understandable). Guitarist Ken Gibson and bassist Cathy Shive either trade off or share vocals, and while comparisons to Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher are understandable, generally speaking the two have a clearer diction while still getting lost in the epic wooziness, as on the appropriately titled "Take You Away." Drummer Charlie Woodburn, meanwhile, makes for a good addition; if not a great drummer per se, he's a good one, adding due punch to tracks like "Porno Queen's Love Dive." Even when the band tones things down a bit, there's a little something around to spike the punch -- thus the dreamy, steady groove of "Cats," with tape suddenly stopped and reversed, not to mention the murky, sudden downward plunge in its final seconds.

OUT OF ORDER Out of Order 1993

Discogs

Out Of Order was born in 1989 in the South Bay of Los Angeles. Beaver McCoy was a young lad, engrossed in the Mod and Ska scene at the time, where he and his crew stopped at a gas station to fill up their Vespa scooters when the gas pump Beaver was going to use had a sign on it: OUT OF ORDER.

The band was created. Over the years, guys came and went but traditional ska was the music that was heard coming out of the garage. Alas the final incarnation of Out Of Order included some guys from the local high school (Mira Costa) who were mostly South Bay punk junkies. Enter the punk influence on Out Of Order.

Over the course of the bands lifetime, Out Of Order managed to get out of the small bubble that was the South Bay of L.A. and play numerous shows on the road often heading up the coast to Stockton and San Francisco where a fanbase rapidly grew. Playing in Northern California gave the band some excellent experiences as well as great friends and contacts in the scene. Playing with Skankin Pickle and the Rudiments up in the Bay Area led to friendships, loyalties... and in the case of Skankin Pickles Mike Park, a spot on one of his record labels compilation albums - Misfits of Ska which brought the bands music to many more ears.
