Japanese emo/post-hardcore band. Pre-toe (5). Originally formed as a hardcore band called Smelling Cunts in 1993, renamed to Dove in 1996, and its musical style evolved to emo and post-hardcore. Comparable to other Japanese bands in similar style like, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, or Nine Days Wonder. One of the members of Dove, Dairoku Seki, currently plays in Envy (2). The way Smelling Cunts evolved into Dove is very similar to how Blind Justice became Envy, actually around the same time as well.

DAVID BAERWALD Triage 1992

Discogs

David Baerwald Biography

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

After the quick dissolution of David & David in the mid-'80s, David Baerwald began a solo career, releasing his solo debut, Bedtime Stories, in 1990. As with David & David's sole album, it was an album of deceptively laid-back pop; the calm production and subtle, memorable melodies hid the fact that Baerwald's characters were either inflicting or suffering from emotional pain. It was a triumph, winning raves from critics, but it sold very few copies. With his second album, 1993's Triage, Baerwald decided to have the music match the message, creating soundscapes that recalled a subdued, more pop-friendly Tom Waits. Again, the critical praise was substantial but the record sold even fewer copies than the first. A follow-up wouldn't be seen for nearly a decade, however; Baerwald took time out to work with other musicians and tweak his playing skills. He later guested on Sheryl Crow's monumental Tuesday Night Music Club debut, and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Moulin Rouge's swan song, "Come What May." Finally, Baerwald bounced back with Here Comes the Folk Underground in 2002.

THE VERLAINES Way Out Where 1993

Discogs

The Verlaines Biography

by Jason Ankeny

A literate and dramatic sector of New Zealand's Dunedin sound and Flying Nun circles, the Verlaines' disenchanted guitar pop has been an indie fixture since the early '80s. Formed around the jangly and excitable songwriting of vocalist/guitarist Graeme Downes, the Verlaines cycled through several lineup changes as they eked out albums over the years, retaining a consistent sound from their early singles (collected on 1987's brilliant Juvenilia) to '90s output like Way Out Where, to their tenth studio album, 2019's Dunedin Spleen.

Downes formed the Verlaines in 1981. The group's original roster also included guitarist Craig Easton, keyboardist Anita Pillai, bassist Philip Higham, and drummer Greg Kerr. Both Easton and Pillai quickly exited, and the Verlaines remained a three-piece for the remainder of the decade. The early lineup was in a constant state of flux, however, and of the original group, only Downes and Kerr remained by the time of their debut on the 1982 Dunedin Double compilation EP, recorded with bassist Jane Dodd. Drummer Alan Haig then replaced Kerr for the 1983 single "Death and the Maiden" -- the archetypal Verlaines song for many fans -- and the lineup was finally cemented with Haig replacing drummer Robbie Yeats; Haig first appeared on the 1984 EP 10 O'Clock in the Afternoon.

The Verlaines' full-length debut, 1985's Hallelujah All the Way Home, was originally submitted as part of a composition project for Downes' honors-level music class; he received an "A" for the record, which bore the heavy influence of his classical background in its exacting compositions, as well as its orchestral and brass flourishes. After the 1986 "Doomsday" single, the Verlaines resurfaced a year later with the excellent Bird Dog LP. A long layoff followed as Downes pursued his PhD, and the group -- with new bassist Mike Stoodley -- did not appear again until the 1990 album Some Disenchanted Evening. Yeats departed soon after and was ultimately replaced by drummer Gregg Cairns. After recording 1991's Ready to Fly, the Verlaines swelled to a four-piece with the addition of second guitarist Paul Winders; after Cairns quit, new drummer Darren Stedman was enlisted in time for 1993's Way Out Where. After this record Downes soon accepted a teaching position at the Auckland Institute of Technology, and after releasing Over the Moon in 1997 (the band's sole album for Columbia Records, distributed only in New Zealand) the band went on hiatus. Downes released a solo album, Hammers and Anvils, in 2001 for Matador but otherwise focused on his academic career for the next few years. In 2003, Flying Nun released You're Just Too Obscure for Me, a curated best-of collection named after the opening line of "Death and the Maiden." In the later part of the decade, Downes reunited with Stedman and Winders, added bassist Russell Fleming, and released a new record every few years under the Verlaines name. Pot Boiler saw the light in 2007 on Flying Nun, Corporate Moronic followed in 2009 for new label Dunedin Music, 2012's Untimely Meditations found them back with Flying Nun again. The Verlaines self-released their tenth album Dunedin Spleen digitally in 2019, ultimately working with North Carolina indie label Schoolkids Records for a physical release of the album in 2021. That year Schoolkids also released Live at the Windsor Castle, 1986, a limited vinyl-only edition that captured one of the band's early shows.

King Cobb Steelie Biography

by Lisa Schwartzman

An anti-commercialism, community-minded collective of musicians, King Cobb Steelie play alternative rock that is a jumble of sampling, scratching, world music instruments and studio sorcery, showing a flair for seamless ecclecticism. Far from being a band that grafts diverse influences onto a Western rock sound, these musicians compose organic, holistic pieces that also create spaces for rich improvistional digressions during live shows. Their first CD, S/T (1993, Raw Energy Records/ A&M), which includes some scratching and samples, introduced KCS as a punk band with knee-deep grooves- a kind of superfreak Fugazi. KCS's next effort was Project Twinkle (1994, Lunamoth), a spacier, bassier dub-jazz groove shower that demonstrated a Bill Laswell musical influence on the band (Laswell also produced the CD). This work has an emphasis on instrumental/ electronic sounds over vocals and jangly guitars. Exploring more electronic sounds than ever, KCS experimented with beats on Junior Relaxor (1997, EMI Canada). Martina Topley-Bird (Tricky's singing partner) - influenced vocals and Trip-Hop stylings indicated yet another stage of evolution for the band, recapturing the edge of their live performances but keeping a low-key groove. King Cobb Steelie, with their expert use of Dub, Trip-Hop, Punk, Rock and Funk, are one of the few groups who can meld and interplay such influences with simple grace. Mayday followed in early 2001.

Glueleg Biography

by Mario Mesquita Borges

Coming from Toronto, Canada, Glueleg showed off a tottering combination of alternative rock, that counted on with a constant and ravishing presence of instruments, such as a saxophone. In addition to it, they affixed on a strong keyboards section that, along with the powerful bass rhythms, offered funky approaches to the neatest sounds of metal. Their formation goes back to 1992, one year before their first recording, Angst, an independently released cassette. They then joined producer James Stewart III, in 1993, to record their first EP, Park Alien. Their lineup at the time consisted of Carlos Alonso (vocals), Ruben Huizenga (vocals, guitar), Andrew Charters (bass), Andrew Wyse (saxophone, keyboards), and Bob Mackowycz (trumpet), later substituted by Alex Hair. Two years later, the Canadian crew released their first album, Heroic Doses on Page Publications, a label set up by the Barenaked Ladies. It was by that time that Alonso left, replaced on lead vocals by Huizenga. Glueleg then signed on with Liquido Records, that decided to re-issue the album, bringing them even more exposure due to EMI's distribution. In 1997, the band released Clodhopper, their second and last album before disbanding, produced by Sylvia Massy, that previously worked with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and with Tool.

Conor Oberst Biography

by Andrew Leahey

With his trembling voice, acoustic guitar, and confessional approach to songwriting, Conor Oberst played an important role in shaping the lighter, intimate side of indie rock during the late '90s and beyond. His main project was Bright Eyes, an eclectic group of rotating musicians that vacillated between pop, folk, electronica, and country-rock. Although Oberst remained at the center of that band, he also logged time in a number of other outfits, including Commander Venus, the Magentas, Park Ave., Desaparecidos, and an early version of the Faint. Finally, he supported like-minded artists on an executive level, co-founding Saddle Creek Records in the '90s and launching his own label, Team Love, in 2003.

A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Conor Mullen Oberst was born on February 15, 1980. He began playing guitar at the age of ten, receiving lessons from his brother Matt -- a part-time teacher who doubled as the vocalist for Sorry About Dresden -- as well as the boys' father. Conor's second sibling, Justin Oberst, joined the effort three years later by financing Conor's first release. Entitled Water, the album featured a cameo by fellow Omaha resident Ted Stevens, who also played alongside Mike Mogis in Lullaby for the Working Class. This early partnership set the stage for Oberst's collaborative discography; it also allowed Oberst to further his friendship with Mike Mogis, who would later play an integral role in Bright Eyes' success.

Although still a young teenager, Oberst joined the ranks of Commander Venus and Norman Bailer (who later rechristened themselves the Faint after Oberst's departure) in 1994. The Faint's Todd Fink then joined Oberst in 1996 for a short-lived band named the Magentas. That same year, Oberst expanded his résumé by playing drums for Park Ave., although the group disbanded two years later. Bandmates Jamie Pressnall and Neely Jenkins went on to form Tilly and the Wall, with Oberst issuing the group's albums under his own Team Love label.

Along with longtime partner Mike Mogis, Oberst experienced an unexpected amount of success with Bright Eyes. The group released several recordings in the late '90s and early 2000s, during which time Oberst also set time aside to play with Desaparecidos. He returned to the Bright Eyes project in 2002, issuing the intimate Lifted or the Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground that summer and following it up with several EPs. It was 2005's ambitious double-album release, however, that established Oberst as a commercial artist, with both discs (I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and the electronic Digital Ash in a Digital Urn) enjoying high-ranking slots on the Billboard 200.

Bright Eyes released another album, 2007's Cassadaga, before Oberst decamped to rural Mexico to work on his first solo effort in years. Recorded in a makeshift studio with a cast of musicians dubbed the Mystic Valley Band, the self-titled Conor Oberst arrived in 2008. While on the road in support of that album, the Mystic Valley Band found time to compose another album, this time highlighting the group's collaborative spirit. Released in 2009, Outer South featured lead vocals and songwriting contributions from several members, a move that expanded the band's sound without threatening Oberst's status as bandleader. Three years later, a documentary about the Mystic Valley Band called One of My Kind appeared on DVD accompanied by a soundtrack collection of B-sides, outtakes, and the tour-only Gentleman's Pact EP. In late 2012, Oberst hit the road once again on a tour of North America and Europe, where he would play a variety of music from his many different monikers. Oberst then worked with producer Jonathan Wilson on the 2014 release Upside-Down Mountain, his first album for Nonesuch Records. The following year, Oberst retreated to his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. It was there that he spent the winter writing and recording his seventh album, Ruminations, which saw release in 2016. He quickly followed up that pared-down recording with Salutations, which featured full-band versions of the songs on Ruminations, in 2017.

Heidi Berry Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Heidi Berry cut a stark contrast to the prevailing musical mentality of the early '90s -- despite releasing records on both Creation and 4AD, together the leading lights of the shoegazing and dream pop movements, her haunting, luminous folk-inspired sound instead harked back to the work of Sandy Denny and Nick Drake, complete with an earnestness and raw honesty far removed from her irony drenched times. Berry was born in 1958 and raised in Boston, MA, the child of an American actor father and a French-Canadian jazz-singing mother. In 1973, her mother remarried and the family relocated to London, where Berry began writing songs in the mold of heroines like Marianne Faithfull and Chrissie Hynde; in 1985, while studying painting and printmaking at Middlesex Polytechnic, she recorded a private demo tape that then-boyfriend Pete Astor (later of the Loft, Weather Prophets, and Wisdom of Harry fame) suggested she shop around. Berry declined the offer, but a copy of the tape still made its way to Creation honcho Alan McGee, who tracked her down and offered a record deal. She accepted, and issued her six-song debut Fireflyin 1987; owing far more to Linda Thompson than Creation labelmates like the Jesus & Mary Chain, it was followed two years later by Below the Waves, a stark, poignant effort highlighted by the fan favorite "North Shore Train." Berry's relationship with Creation grew strained, however, and while opening for Felt and Lush, she was spotted by 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russell, who asked her to record a cover of Emmylou Harris' "'Til I Gain Control Again" for 1991's Blood, the third LP by his rotating musical collective This Mortal Coil. Berry signed to 4AD to release her next solo effort, 1991's Love, recorded with producer Pete Walsh and an ace backing group including Levitation guitarist Terry Bickers and bassist Laurence O'Keefe, in addition to avant-garde saxophonist Lol Coxhill. Her self-titled masterpiece followed in 1993, notching a minor hit with the lovely "The Sun and the Moon" and yielding an American tour alongside fellow 4AD act Red House Painters. However, despite continued critical acclaim, 1995's Miracle failed to make waves behind Berry's cult audience and she was released from her contract. With the exception of the 1999 single "Needle's Eye" -- recorded with former Kitchens of Distinction frontman Patrick Fitzgerald under the name Lost Girls -- she remained silent in the years to follow. The compilation Pomegranate appeared on 4AD in 2000.
