Alaska Days Review

by Norm Elrod

Despite it's chilly title, Poole's 1995 debut, Alaska Days, is filled with warm bursts of musical sunshine. Similar to other SpinART bands like Apples in Stereo, this D.C. area quartet offers up bright and bouncy tunes filled with jingly guitars and two- and three-part harmonies. Vocalists Harv, Harry Evans, and Jeff Booth ponder the lighter side of adolescence -- fast cars ("Car"), vague idol worship ("Loon"), and the odd high-school crush ("Strawberry Kool-Aid Smile") -- on this self-produced first effort, avoiding adulthood like the average teenager. The lyrics can be immature and adolescent ("Mary Shakes Her Hair"), but the melodies offer refined moments of pure pop genius (same song). Imagine either the most sugary bites of Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend without the overdubs and super slick production, or later Lemonheads albums without the punk rock aspirations, pinned down by a bounding bassline and a crisp backbeat. Poole can match melody and lyrical insight, and does so on occasion ("Oregon"). Unfortunately, they sometimes fail on both accounts, leaving the listener with a lazy, meandering mess ("Snowcicle"). Still, the hits far outnumber the misses, whereas on later albums, the opposite is often true. A few slow spots don't spoil the infectious fun of the happy-go-lucky Alaska Days. It could easily be the indie rock sing-along soundtrack for summer vacation, providing a nice substitute for those who now have to settle for two weeks.

THE BLUEBELLS Second 1992

Artist Biography

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

During their brief time together in the early '80s, the Bluebells (songwriter Robert "Bobby Bluebell" Hodgens [born on June 6, 1959] [guitar], Kenneth McClusky [born on February 8, 1962] [vocals/harmonica], Dave McCluskey [born on January 13, 1964] [drums], Russell Irvin [guitar] [replaced by Craig Gannon (born on July 30, 1966)], and Lawrence Donegan [bass] [replaced by Neil Baldwin]) made a small amount of music -- several singles, most of which showed up on one EP -- but that is not proportional to the quality of their music. Like fellow Scots Aztec Camera, the Bluebells crafted impeccable, jangly guitar pop, only with better melodies and stronger hooks. Two of their singles ("I'm Falling" and "Young at Heart") hovered around the lower reaches of the U.K. Top Ten in 1984, but they soon broke up, leaving a small, but impressive, body of work. David McCluskey and his brother, Ken, formed a folk duo. Robert Hodgens formed Up. Craig Gannon briefly filled in for bassist Andy Rourke in the Smiths on tour, then stayed as a second live guitarist; he joined Adult Net after being fired from the Smiths in 1986.

SWEEP THE LEG JOHNNY 4 9 21 30 1997

Artist Biography

by Stephen Howell

Vocalist/saxophonist Steve Sostak and guitarist Chris Daly began performing together in the South Bend, IN, group Check Engine during the summer of 1993, and played one show before breaking up in April of 1994. Two years later, Sostak and Daly started Sweep the Leg Johnny with bassist Matt Alicea and drummer Scott Anna while living in Chicago. They decided to incorporate a little bit of all of their influences, which included dissonant rock, progressive music, jazz, noise and punk. It immediately became apparent at the band's live shows that their sound was indefinable. By early 1997, the group had recorded a split 7" with the band Similarities. Divot Records had also released Sweep the Leg Johnny's New Buffalo 7". The group's first tour was in support of New Buffalo, and the release found the band hitting the road for two months. The group followed the tour by recording a track for a Zum magazine compilation at Chicago's CRC studios. The song "Welter" appeared in the summer of 1997. Shortly thereafter, Divot released the band's debut full-length, titled 4.9.21.30. In support of the album, they toured for 57 days. During the outing, the group chose to play in as many locations as possible, whether it was a big city or a small town. The band was pleased with the end results, because no matter where they played, they averaged selling a CD to one out of every four people at each show. By the spring of 1998, Sweep the Leg Johnny had finished recording a split single with A Minor Forest for Tree Records' Post Marked Stamps series. The group spent two weeks that spring touring with Spanakorzo, followed by a handful of summer tour dates. While on tour, the band had begun to write new material for its second LP -- their first for Southern Records -- titled Tomorrow We Will Run Faster. Shortly before the recording sessions began, though, Alicea left and was replaced by former Spanakorzo/Swing Kids' bassist John Brady. Four weeks after Brady's entrance into the band, he began recording Tomorrow We Will Run Faster with the group. The record was released by the spring of 1999, and the band toured incessantly throughout the rest of the year to promote the album. In January of 2000, Daly and Sostak were busy re-forming Check Engine with guitarist/vocalist Joe Cannon and former Big'n drummer Brian Wnukowski. A few months later found Sweep the Leg Johnny reuniting to record their third LP, Sto Cazzo!, in the band's apartment. The album -- their second for Southern Records -- was released in the spring of 2000. During a portion of 2001, Sweep the Leg Johnny was on hiatus as Check Engine recorded their debut full-length album. Mastering of the record was finished by September 15 and Sweep the Leg Johnny reconvened with the addition of guitarist Mitch Cheney to play a fall tour. Meanwhile, Check Engine's CD was released in January of 2002, just as Sweep the Leg Johnny returned from their travels. Not to be outdone, Sweep the Leg Johnny managed to release Going Down Swinging only a few months later on Southern Records. A split live release with San Francisco's Rumah Sakit was released in 2003.

HOLIDAY Holiday 1995

Discogs

Artist Biography
by Jason Ankeny

Much-missed indie-pop combo Holiday formed on the campus of Yale University in late 1992; originally comprising singer/guitarist Josh Gennet, guitarist Matt Snow, bassist Andrew Park and an Alesis drum machine, the group -- initially dubbed Wimp Rocket -- self-released their 1993 debut cassette The Big Pickle before adding drummer Paul Moyano and travelling to Chicago to record their official debut EP, the Dave Trumfio-produced My Roommate Joe. Drummer Calvin Chin replaced Moyano for the follow-up single, "Permission Slip," and after issuing "Prostitutes in Town" in the fall of 1994, Holiday signed with March Records to issue their self-titled debut album in February. The record's airy, shimmering sound made it a major favorite of underground pop aficionados, and its fine follow-up, 1996's Ready, Steady, Go!, was also a cult hit. Drummer J. Niimi replaced Chin for 1997's Cafe Reggio; by the time of its release, however, Holiday was already a thing of the past -- the group disbanded following their appearance at the New York Popfest that January. Gennet went on to record as the Singletons.

Artist Biography

by Mark Deming

A strikingly gifted guitarist whose repertoire runs the gamut from traditionalist roots music to jagged free improvisation, with stylistic fearlessness and passion the principal unifying factors, Marc Ribot has enjoyed a successful career as an in-demand sideman as well as leading numerous recording and performing projects of his own. After making his way into New York's downtown experimental music community in the late '70s, Ribot first gained serious attention for his work with John Lurie's "fake jazz" combo the Lounge Lizards and various projects with adventurous composer John Zorn while also performing with R&B acts. He began a longstanding association with Tom Waits in 1985, playing on his album Rain Dogs, and has also collaborated frequently with Elvis Costello (starting with 1989's Spike) and producer T-Bone Burnett. Ribot has also led projects that find him exploring jazz (the Young Philadelphians), Cuban music (Marc Ribot y los Cubanos Postizos), and experimental rock (Ceramic Dog) as well as recording solo releases, including his 2018 collection of historical protest music, Songs of Resistance 1948-2018.

SHONEN KNIFE Rock Animals 1993

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Greg Prato

During the early-'90s alternative wave, quirky Japanese indie rock trio Shonen Knife made major fans out of alt-rock's elite (Sonic Youth, Nirvana, and Redd Kross, among others) and built a solid worldwide cult following with their Ramones-meets-Beatles brand of sticky-sweet punk-pop. Following their early-'80s rise as indie upstarts, they signed to the majors for the release of 1992's breakthrough Let's Knife. With vocalist Naoko Yamano at the core, four albums were issued with the founding trio before the first of many lineup shuffles. The group's early-2000s output included 2003's Candy Rock and 2005's Genki Shock! Cementing their veteran status in the 2010s, Yamano kept the band going, their endearing charm and no-nonsense punk bursts packing efforts such as 2011's Osaka Ramones and their 20th album, 2016's Adventure.

Formed by Michie Nakatani (vocals, bass), Naoko Yamano (vocals, guitar), and Atsuko Yamano (drums), Shonen Knife started in December 1981 in their hometown of Osaka, where all three members were working as office clerks. The group played their first real show in March of the following year. Soon after, they began issuing albums in Japan, including 1982's cassette-only release Minna Tanoshiku (English translation: Everybody Happy?), 1983's Burning Farm, 1984's Yama No Attchan, and 1986's Pretty Little Baka Guy (the latter of which was reissued with extra tracks four years later, under the title Pretty Little Baka Guy/Live in Japan). Although their records were only available in the U.S. via import, Shonen Knife struck a chord with the underground with a track that appeared on the Sub Pop 100 compilation in 1986. In 1989, a collection of alternative bands even recorded renditions of their favorite Shonen Knife songs for the tribute album Every Band Has a Shonen Knife Who Loves Them.

The first Shonen Knife release to be issued outside of Japan was a 1990 self-titled compilation that featured the entire Burning Farm and Yama No Attchan albums, as well as three tracks that were only previously available on the obscure Japanese comp Aura Music. Shortly thereafter, the group began touring America on a somewhat regular basis, supporting their 1991 release 712 with some dates opening for Nirvana just prior to the runaway success of Cobain and company's now-classic Nevermind album. Now the hip band to name-drop, Shonen Knife signed their first major U.S. recording contract with Capitol, resulting in the release of one of their finest (and best-known) albums, 1992's Let's Knife. A year later, the group switched to the Virgin label, issuing Rock Animals, which would spawn a semi-popular MTV video with "Tomato Head" (even landing a spot on the network's popular animated series Beavis and Butthead).

In 1994, the trio performed as part of the traveling alternative rock festival Lollapalooza and contributed a cover of "Top of the World" to the Carpenters tribute album If I Were a Carpenter, while Virgin issued an 18-track collection of rare tracks, Birds & the B-Sides, in 1996. Although they were able to greatly expand their U.S. fan base, Shonen Knife never obtained the breakthrough success that was expected by many, resulting in the group returning to the independents and issuing such further releases as 1997's Brand New Knife, 1998's Happy Hour, and the 2000 Japan-only release Strawberry Sound (which featured the band's revamped lineup of Atsuko Yamano on bass and Mana Nishiura, who joined Shonen Knife after Nakatani left in 1999, on drums).

Vocalist Naoko Yamano was the only original member during the mid- to late 2000s, but even after 20-plus years and difficulties maintaining a consistent lineup, the band showed no signs of slowing. In 2005, Oglio reissued the group's first four albums, and the band released Genki Shock in Japan. Late that year, Nishiura was killed in a New Jersey traffic accident while touring with DMBQ. Both Shonen Knife and DMBQ performed at a tribute concert for Nishiura that was held in Kyoto in spring 2006, shortly before the U.S. release of Genki Shock. The group continued on with drummer Etsuko Nakanishi and bassist Ritsuko Taneda, releasing a live album and another full-length, Super Group, in 2009. A few months after completing 2010's Free Time, drummer Nakanishi parted ways with the band, to be replaced by Emi Morimoto. After celebrating their 30th anniversary with a concert in New York, the Yamano/Taneda/Morimoto lineup released Pop Tune in 2012 and Overdrive in 2014.

The year 2015 saw more lineup changes for Shonen Knife. In March, founding drummer Atsuko rejoined the group on bass, a reunion that was supposed to be a temporary gig while Ritsuko was away on maternity leave. However, Ritsuko did not return and Atsuko continued with the band. Months later, Morimoto announced her departure and was replaced by Risa Kawano (Brinky). In April 2016, the year of their 35th anniversary, Kawano and the Yamano sisters returned with Shonen Knife's 20th studio album, the '70s rock-inspired Adventure, which featured the single "Jump Into the New World." The following year they delivered the compilation Ready! Set!! Go!!!, a special collection released in conjunction with their tour of Australia. In 2018, the band celebrated their comeback success with ALIVE! in Osaka, a live collection culled from their lengthy list of punk confections. Speaking of confections, their 21st set, Sweet Candy Power, arrived in 2019 and featured ten upbeat punk ditties such as "Party" and "Dizzy."
