BETHANY CURVE Gold 1998

Discogs

Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny

Skies a Crossed Sky Singers/guitarists Richard Millang and Ray Lake, bassist Chris Preston and drummer David Mac Wha formed the ambient pop outfit Bethany Curve in Santa Cruz, CA in May 1994; adopting the motto "Atmosphere, Arrangement, Sound, Layering and Noise," the group issued their debut cassette Mee-eaux in 1995, signing to Unit Circle the following year for the full-length Skies a Crossed Sky. The group next resurfaced in 1998 with Gold. Three years later, Bethany Curve released You Brought Us Here, but not without a hitch. Preston left the band just prior to the new album while Lake departed several months later. Guitarist Nathan Guevara was added to the fray and Bethany Curve toured as a three piece in support of You Brought Us Here. Classically trained cellist Daved Lockhart joined the band in late 2001 and the band inked a deal with Kitchen Whore.

SHARK QUEST Battle of the Loons 1998

Discogs

Artist Biography by Richie Unterberger

Chapel Hill, NC, quintet Shark Quest plays eclectic instrumental rock geared toward the alternative market. Their music draws from atmospheric soundtrack music (Ennio Morricone being one likely overused reference point), folk music, desert twang, and bits of other genres. Although pretty guitar-oriented, they also employ banjo and mandolin (played by Sara Bell), as well as occasional cello, keyboards, and vibes. Their debut Battle of the Loons was released in 1998. Their second album, 2000's Man on Stilts, was produced by Brian Paulson who has worked with Wilco, Son Volt, Slint, and Squirrel Nut Zippers).

CYCLOPS Goat Volume 1994

AllMusic Review by Ned Raggett

Bringing together the talents of Peter Jefferies on drums and vocals and Kathy Bull on bass, vocals, and guitar, along with guitarist/singer Bruce Blucher, and singer/keyboardist Andre Richardson, Cyclops produced this one fine album with most of the tracks taken from a series of sessions in 1991 and 1992. Unsurprisingly, each performer brings something from their own particular backgrounds in New Zealand underground rock, together resulting in a casual but not lazy series of songs that sounds like it was good fun to perform. That said, much of the dank, crumbling sound of Kiwi experimentalism runs unsurprisingly rampant. Recording, often overseen by noted producer/engineer Steven Kilroy on four- or eight-track machines, is lo-fi well before that became a hip phrase, thick and rough, but with a passion that comes through on every note. "Lunar Fall," a wonderful number written and sung by Bull, is a great example; its soaring guitar would seem to demand U2-style production levels, but recorded in the lovely haze as it is, it sounds much more affecting as a result; her vocals are just right as well. Blucher is the chief songwriter and singer for the lineup, but everything's much more like a collaboration than simply an interpretation of other's work, such is the feeling of the songs. When the various members experiment with other instruments, such as Bull's mandolin on "Gurgie Throat" or Blucher's ragged trumpet on, unsurprisingly, "Fallen Golden Trumpets," the results are even more effective, adding more variety to the low-key flow of the album. Other highlights include the Richardson/Blucher duet on "Steel White Bed," with another beautiful guitar line and crush in the background of the mix, and the no-percussion-needed "Spolcyc," with all members but Bull present and using keyboards and guitar to create the soundtrack to a gruesome spoken word tale.

CANDYLAND Suck It And See 1991

Discogs

Artist Biography by Michael Sutton

Candyland had a sweet tooth for Madchester: dope-fueled dance beats; choppy, lazy guitars; and slices of '60s psychedelic pop. Arguably more club-oriented than their peers, the multi-racial group -- it featured members from Somalia and Jamaica as well as from the U.K. -- was formed in London, England, by Felix Tod (vocals) and David Wesley Ayers, Jr. (guitar); Kenediid Osman (bass), Derrick McKenzie (drums), and Colin Payne (keyboards) were eventually added to the lineup. Gil Norton, renowned producer of post-punk acts like Echo & the Bunnymen and the Pixies, recorded the band's first demo. Even before the group's debut single, "Fountain of Youth," appeared, they were invited to perform at the Great British Music Weekend in Wembley. In 1991, Candyland released their first and only LP, Suck It and See, breaking up shortly after its release. In 1993, the breathy-voiced Tod became a producer, working with Heather Nova; he ended up producing four of her albums as well as reggae artist Mishka's (Nova's brother) 1999 self-titled debut.

THE ATOMIC FIREBALLS Birth of the Swerve 1998

Discogs

Artist Biography by Gary Hill

The Atomic Fireballs were formed in Detroit in 1996 by John Bunkley and James Bostek. The two of them met when Bostek's wife was working with Bunkley and introduced them. Although the group plays their own brand of high-energy swing music, they list their influences to be as far ranging as Louis Jordan and Black Flag. The lineup of the group is Bostek on trumpet, Bunkley on vocals, Tony Buccilli playing trombone, Duke Kingins on guitar, Shawn Scaggs on double bass, Eric Schabo wailing tenor sax, and Randy Sly on piano. Their first album was the self-released Birth of the Swerve (1998). The album was good enough to garner the interest of major labels. That meant that the follow-up, 1999's Torch This Place, was not an independent release but rather on Atlantic.
