THE ROSENBERGS Ameripop 1999

Discogs

The Rosenbergs Biography

by Kieran McCarthy

The Rosenbergs have gained more attention for their intransigent relationship toward the music business than for their music. But their refusal to buckle down to unfair industry contracts has not completely overshadowed their concise, original indie pop sound. After spending five years bumming around New York, burning bridges with a revolving door of drummers and guitar players, David Fagin and Evan Silverman finally found a pair of Joes, Mahoney and Darone, to complete their lineup. In 1999, they unveiled Ameripop, their first full-fledged studio release. They supplied the funds for their own tour of England and then returned to the States in hopes of garnering more publicity. It was about this time when they turned down opportunity to appear on Farmclub.com, a website/cable TV show/record label conglomeration headed by Jimmy Iovine, because of some particularly one-sided contract terms. This brash display of independent-label integrity loosened a torrential flood of positive publicity, which they've been feeding off ever since. But this shrewd and dedicated foursome has more to offer than a keen sense of marketing. They've hammered out a clever pop sound that could compare to the brightest days of Cheap Trick. Fagin's lyrics treat traditional tormented love themes creatively, and the cohesiveness of the band proves they're not just playing at being rock stars. With the help of their new label, Robert Fripp's Discipline Global Mobile, they released Mission: You in 2001, a gorgeously produced sophomore effort, drowning out critics who might have suggested they were a gimmicky fluke. Department Store Girl followed two years later.

STAR COLLECTOR (U.S.) Songs For The Whole Family 1999

Discogs

Star Collector (2) recorded only one album that sold well - nearly 2000 copies and received great reviews in the local Atlanta papers and even US and international powerpop/rock magazines like Bucketful of Brains, Amplifier and Magnet. It did well in the UK and Japan. The album made a number of top 10 lists in 1999. The band did a cover of Sir's Paul and Declan's "My Brave Face" for the "Coming Up" Macca tribute that came out in 2000. It was the very last thing Star Collector recorded together. To this day AMG lists the album with the albums done by the Canadian band of the same name and give them credit for it. Joe Giddings has tried in vain, numerous times, to get them to change it.

THURMAN Lux 1995

Discogs

Mid-'90s power trio Britpop group that sprang from the ashes of the UK metal group 2 Die 4. Their music often dwelled in lively retro-'60s and -'70s pop stylings influenced by The Beatles, T. Rex, The Small Faces, David Bowie, The Kinks, and others. Thurman toured the UK with Echobelly in October 1994, had live shows with Supergrass in January, 1995, toured the UK with Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine in February and March of that year (then went to Europe with them in April), played "The Beat" night at the London Astoria with Gene and EMF on national TV. They headlined some UK shows in summer 1995 while recording their debut album, played live on August 27th at the The Reading Festival. They eventually toured Japan, as well, to fanatical crowds. As per a recent 2020 interview with the group's singer/songwriter Nick Kenny, Thurman never quite got past the UK music press' penchant for cruel, fickle treatment of groups they didn't like in the 1994-'96 Britpop era. So it was very difficult for the band to make any further headway after the release of their only album and they subsequently disbanded under the Thurman name in 1996. They reformed shortly thereafter with ex-Nubiles member Dan Goddard as the Buffalo Springfield/Neil Young-tinged rock group The Four Storeys. Nick and his brother Simon Kenny are currently in the group The Long Insiders with Dan Goddard.

EARTH EIGHTEEN Butterfly 1995

Discogs

Butterfly Review

by Amy Hanson

Rising from the apocalyptic rubble of the post-grunge era, Britain's Earth 18 unleashed their Butterfly LP debut in 1995. Sounding for all the world like glammed-out rock & rollers enmeshed in a battle of wills with the flannelled, goateed alt-rock brigade, the songs on Butterfly roil and seethe, sublimated only by early era giveaway drumbeats and vocalist John Dupree's occasional penchant for channeling the spirit of T. Rex's Marc Bolan. From the wonderful opener "La La Song," which harkens back to a platform-booted era despite its Generation X lyrics, to the light jibes at heavy metal meatheads on the heavy, hair-shaking "Mechanimal," and on to the absolutely marvelous downer, "The Fall Divine," this band proves proficient across a sonic jigsaw puzzle. Throw in the dirty rock & roll of "Maximum Teenage Overdrive," which threads dated tinky-tinky synthesizers among Pink Floyd moments, and the theatrically over-the-top fuzz of "The Girl With the Downward Smile," and you've pretty much covered the decade to date, with a few others thrown in as well. Enjoyable and interesting across the board, it's a shame Earth 18 were relegated to little more than a flash in the pan. It's possible that they may have revealed themselves to be a one-album kind of a band, but it's also plausible that, with a little time and leeway, they might have developed into something very special indeed.

MARTIN NEWELL Let's Kiosk! 1995

Discogs

Martin Newell Biography

by Richie Unterberger

One of the great eccentrics of modern English pop/rock, Martin Newell's songs are recommended listening for anyone who enjoys the peculiarly British eccentricities of Ray Davies, Andy Partridge, Syd Barrett, and the like. His grasp of the pop hook was second to few throughout the 1980s and '90s; his arrangements favor a guitar jangle but are usually infused with a whimsical eclecticism full of goofy sound effects and unusual garnishes of unexpected percussion and string instruments. His voice is winningly quizzical, but his chief assets are his compositions, which reflect contemporary English life with a wry combination of affection and cynicism.

For most of the 1980s, Newell was the mainstay of Cleaners from Venus, who recorded most of their albums at home for cassette-only self-release, although they eventually put out some vinyl product. After a short stint as head of the similar Brotherhood of Lizards, Martin started a solo career in the 1990s that was essentially a continuation of the territory he'd explored in the 1980s; sometimes he re-recorded songs from the previous decade. The difference, if any, was that he was concentrating on the proper official album market instead of the cassette underground, with somewhat higher (though not slick) production values.

Newell's most acclaimed album was 1993's The Greatest Living Englishman, which was produced by Andy Partridge of XTC. The Off White Album (1995) was a bit more baroque in approach, with occasional string arrangements. Spirit Cage was issued in fall 2000, and a collection of home-brewed recordings from 2010 through 2014, Teatime Assortment, appeared in 2015. Newell has co-written material with Captain Sensible and is a poet/humorist of some renown in Britain, publishing his own prose with a good deal of success and writing humorous pieces for the Independent newspaper. Ironically, his music is virtually unknown on his home turf, although he enjoys a considerable cult following in Germany, Japan, France, and on certain American college radio stations.
