THE IMPOSSIBLE FIVE Eleven Hours In Antwerp 1997

Discogs

Eleven Hours in Antwerp Review

by Peter J. D'Angelo

Virginia's Impossible Five plays a spacey hybrid of brooding rock and harder edges that manages to stay pretty interesting for the duration of the 12-track LP. Loose, reverberating guitars lead the way through the more pensive numbers, but the group has no problem shifting into early punk singalong styles either, especially on the closing "Deception." Slightly fuzzy vocals command the record, but they are oddly melodic and inviting in a Fugazi-like fashion. Much of the record actually sounds quite a bit like the later and more melodic work of D.C.'s favorite trendsetters, but Impossible Five also work in some jagged rock moves to keep listeners guessing. Eleven Hours in Antwerp is far from a trendsetting record, but it follows and builds on existing styles with enough conviction to be convincing. The band can handle all speeds and styles with equal agility, and there is a personable quality to the songs that makes it more than a throwaway punk record or a dull moody rock effort. Tracks like "A Transmission by Wire" burst with nearly chaotic energy, and Impossible 5 are able to downshift their sound in a split second, making their strengths even more noticeable. This is the kind of record that may never make serious waves, but for a few folks lucky enough to hear it, it could become something of a personal favorite.

Ensign Biography

by Mike DaRonco

Featuring ex-members of Vision, H20, and Undertow, and inspired by East Coast hardcore legends Youth of Today, New Jersey's Ensign was originally a quartet featuring vocalist Tim Shaw, guitarist John Fraunberger, bassist Nate Gluck, and drummer Ryan Murphy. Indecision released their self-titled debut EP, quickly followed by the four-song Fall from Grace, which includes a cover of Instead's "We'll Make the Difference." In 1997, their first-full length, Direction of Things to Come, was released to a wave of critical praise, creating a fan base throughout the country. The follow-up full-length, Cast the First Stone, was released by California's Nitro Records in 1999, featuring new guitarist Ryan "Mackenzie" Donoghue and drummer John O'Neill. In 2000, Indecision released a compilation of the group's early work, titled Three Years, Two Months, Eleven Days; Ensign's official third album, The Price of Progression, appeared on Nitro in early 2001, featuring new guitarist Chris Byrnes and new bassist Chris Oliver (Gluck switched to guitar). The covers album Love the Music, Hate the Kids appeared in the fall of 2003 via Blackout, featuring the guys paying homage to such acts as the Descendents, Dag Nasty, the Replacements, and more. By then, Ensign had gone through a few more players and consisted of Shaw and Gluck (back on bass) alongside drummer Brian Kozuch and guitarist Frank Piegaro.

SUBARACHNOID SPACE Delicate Membrane 1996

SubArachnoid Space Biography

by Jason Ankeny

The neo-psychedelic improvisational unit SubArachnoid Space formed in San Francisco in late 1995. Originally comprised of guitarist Mason Jones, bassist Jason Stein, and drummer Michelle Schreibner, they debuted early the following year with the single "Char-Broiled Wonderland," welcoming second guitarist Melynda Jackson shortly after the record's release. The full-length Delicate Membrane followed later in 1996, with Ether Or appearing in the early months of 1997. After the release of Almost Invisible (also 1997), Stein exited and was replaced by bassist Andey Stephens. Endless Renovation followed in 1998, and a year later the group resurfaced with Sleeping Sickness and issued These Things Take Time in fall 2000. As the decade wore on, the sound of the band's releases increased in heaviness. Though not as prolific as they once were, they did issue Also Rising in 2003 and The Red Veil in 2005. By the time the band recorded 2009's Eight Bells, its lineup featured Jackson, Daniel Barone (bass), Lauren K. Newman (drums), and Daniel Osborne (guitar).

Subcircus Biography

by Bryan Thomas

Progressive Brit-pop band Subcircus burst on the scene in late 1994. Singer and leader Peter Bradley Jr. (who hails from the same Yorkshire town where Bram Stroker wrote Dracula) and guitarist Nikolaj Bloch met after Bloch found Bradley's "Musicians Wanted" ad in Melody Maker. Bradley and his brother Bobby had already been performing as the Bradley Brothers, eventually splitting, with Peter signing to Polydor. In early 1995, he, Bloch, and drummer Tommas Arnby (a native of Copenhagen, Denmark, he arrived in London in 1992) gathered at Bradley's parents' house in North Yorkshire and jammed. Soon after, they recruited bassist George Brown, the only bandmember actually from London. Eventually the band members all moved to London, rehearsing in a Kings Cross basement rehearsal room called the Secret Garden. They played their first concert in York, England, in 1995, wearing makeup and wacky outfits. Word of mouth spread, and by May of 1996 Subcircus had played more than 150 shows throughout the U.K., headlining two club tours and opening for Echo and the Bunnymen, Suede, Elvis Costello, Grant Lee Buffalo, and Ocean Colour Scene, among others. In September 1996, their stellar sub-Radiohead-sounding debut Carousel was recorded in London at Air Studios and at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in Bath, England. It was ultimately issued in the U.K. by the independent Echo label (Dreamworks released a new version – sequenced differently and including one new track – in the U.S. in August 1997). The album drew critical raves from the U.K. press and built up a rabid fan base. Two singles from the album, "86'd" and "U Love U," charted in Britain. For several years the group seemed to have disappeared, but reappeared (without the makeup and wild clothing) in early 2000. The band finally issued a new single, "Sixty Second Love Affair" (appropriately enough, it was released on Valentine's Day), following it in March with their second full-length album, Are You Receiving Me?.

Ether Net Biography

by Jason MacNeil

Although based in Cleveland, this band has a distinct international flavoring in its makeup. The duo of Robert Cherry and Switzerland-native David Mooser teamed up, performing around the Cleveland area before hooking up with drummer Mark Klein. In 1994, EtherNet released Ione Skye, its debut single, which was followed by a promotional EP and the Cyan EP. A 7" vinyl collaboration with Cobra Verde saw both bands cover songs by Echo & the Bunnymen as well as the Teardrop Explodes. In 1996, EtherNet released its debut full-length album, Severance, which was noted for its David Bowie overtones. The band continued to tour and receive press in local and national alternative music magazines. After this came The Requisite Chemicals album, released on Requisite Recordings in 2000. The album was praised for its sound, resembling early-'70s groups like Big Star and Badfinger. At this time, EtherNet changed drummers, with Klein leaving and being replaced by Brian Gemmill, former drummer of the New Zealand industrial band Lung. The group had a prized North American opening slot for both Idlewild and Placebo in North America. In 2002, the group released More Strange Bruises, with keyboardist Ken Leonard added to the mix.

BUDGET GIRLS On A Tight Budget 1997

Discogs

The story goes like this…..

Teri and Kristen were two go-go dancers from the USA who decided to form a band with three garage kids from the N7 Action Sound scene (Cee Bee Beaumont).

Their debut single was recorded in two hours at Toe Rag Studios. The Get In Your Ear E.P. was a lo-fi classic (also issued in the states by Planet Pimp records). Kristen went back to the states and Teri stayed over here, 18 months later they got back together to record their one and only (so far) album.

On A Tight Budget was released in early 1998 and was by far the rudest album ever on DG, it’s also a great great album, if you don’t have it you need it.

THE CHINKEES Peace Through Music 1999

The Chinkees Biography

by Jason Ankeny

An all-Asian ska-punk band featuring Skankin' Pickle alum Mike Park, the Chinkees debuted in 1998 with the album The Chinkees Are Coming! The following year the group -- which also comprised bassist/vocalist Miya Zane Osaki, guitarist/vocalist/drummer Greg Alesandro, guitarist Jason Thinh, and keyboardist Steve Choi -- released Peace Through Music; both albums were issued through Park's own label, Asian Man Records. The band's name was not intended to be a racial slur, as in fact it was hoping to be just the opposite by raising awareness of racial discrimination. Just like Asian Man, the group was all about spreading positivity and addressing issues (without being aggressively political in fear of alienating people) important to improving the future. A split with the Lawrence Arms entitled Present Day Memories appeared in May 2001 before the Chinkees' next full-length, Searching for a Brighter Future, was released one year later.
