THE JAYHAWKS Waiting For The Sun 1993

.

Artist Biography by

Hollywood Town Hall
Led by the gifted songwriting, impeccable playing, and honeyed harmonies of vocalists/guitarists Mark Olson and Gary Louris, the Jayhawks' shimmering blend of country, folk, and bar band rock made them one of the most widely acclaimed artists to emerge from the alternative country scene of the '80s. Playing an evocative blend of downcast, folk-leaning pop with Neil Young-informed country accents, the band emerged from the Minneapolis music scene in the mid-'80s, and after a pair of early independent releases, the group became critical favorites and cult heroes with the release of their first major-label album, 1992's superb Hollywood Town Hall. After 1995's Tomorrow the Green Grass, Olson left the group, and under Louris' leadership, they went on, displaying a more pop-oriented direction on 2000's Smile. After 2003's Rainy Day Music, the Jayhawks went on hiatus, but Olson and Louris reunited the band for 2011's Mockingbird Time. Olson once again dropped out, but Louris gave the band a third act with 2016's adventurous Paging Mr. Proust

SLEESTAK The Power of Gemini 1997

.

AllMusic Review by

Like their zipper-showing namesakes, these reptiles of dissonance are barking a lot, but one can see through their plans. The first track, "Endo" offers periodic shell-bursts of unsettling noise. This is the mere Cerebus at the Gates of Sleestak Hell. Much of the rest of the recording has more to do with Kato Hideki than Merzbow. Still, great fare for forcefully digressing from the mundane word. Their publicist wants you to think they are "scary" and their label passes it off as a contrived experiment sonic torture. Actually, if you like noise rock, like me, you will find this adventurous, compositional and heavily mixed with ambient cacophony.

PAN SONIC A 1999

Artist Biography by

Pan Sonic -- originally Panasonic, until an inevitable confrontation with the Japanese manufacturing giant of the same name -- was among the most active and well-known exports from Finland's experimental techno underground, the first to reach acclaim at an international level. Pursuing the jagged edges of minimal and hardcore techno, Pan Sonic earned an enduring association with industrial and noise music through their incorporation of antiseptic production techniques and power-tool electronics. As they junked together studio equipment from spare parts and ancient analog debris, Pan Sonic's search for the untried in techno was their compositional m.o., which placed them closer to the genre's Detroit roots than is often understood. They represented a collision between the Motor City's Jeff Mills and Cologne's Mike Ink: dance-based electronic music with maximum impact made with minimal extraneous detail.

ADAM SCHMITT Illiterature 1993

.

Artist Biography by

Singer/songwriter Adam Schmitt first won acclaim in the early '90s when his 1991 debut album, World So Bright, and 1993 follow-up, Illiterature, had critics hailing him as a young pop genius. However, when his label Reprise didn't want to release a third album from him, Schmitt decided to record other artists instead, engineering, producing, and mastering music for Tommy Keene, Hum, Beezus, Robynn Ragland, and others in his home studio. By 1998, Schmitt was ready to concentrate on his own music again, but his perfectionism and production work delayed the release of his third effort until the middle of 2001. That album, Demolition, was issued by Parasol; Schmitt started out as a producer by working with many of the label's artists.

Artist Biography by

By combining 60's British Invasion rock with power-pop antics and a touch of glam rock, Richmond, Virginia's The Waking Hours just want to have fun and occasionally smash up their instruments. Having gotten their start in 1994, Rob Clark (drums) and Tom Richards (vocals/ guitar) eventually gathered up Scott Richards (bass) and Ricky Tubb (guitar), fully settling in their line-up by 1996. After the release of their first album which was also independently recorded and distributed, The Waking Hours were also independently putting themselves in debt all for the sake of D.I.Y. Two years following, Time Bomb Records sought out, signed and released their self-titled second album.

THE ORB Peel Sessions 1991

.

Artist Biography by

U.F.Orb
The Orb virtually invented the electronic genre known as ambient house, resurrecting slower, more soulful rhythms and providing a soundtrack for early-morning ravers once the clubs closed their doors. Frontman Dr. Alex Paterson's formula was quite simple: he slowed down the rhythms of classic Chicago house and added synth work and effects inspired by '70s ambient pioneers Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream. To make the whole a bit more listenable -- as opposed to danceable -- obscure vocal samples were looped, usually providing a theme for tracks that lacked singing. The group popularized the genre by appearing on the British chart show Top of the Pops and hitting number one in the U.K. with the 1992 album U.F.Orb. The Orb managed to remain signed to Island Records throughout the '90s, even as they were releasing some of their most challenging work (Pomme Fritz, Orbus Terrarum). During the 2000s, the group became affiliated with German techno label Kompakt, home to solo recordings by Orb member Thomas Fehlmann; Okie Dokie It's the Orb on Kompakt, one of the group's most straightforward techno releases, appeared in 2005. The 2010s brought high-profile collaborations with two major influences: David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Lee "Scratch" Perry. The Orb returned to Kompakt for 2015's hip-hop-influenced Moonbuilding 2703 AD and 2016's ambient release COW / Chill Out, World! These were followed by 2018's eclectic, vocal-heavy No Sounds Are Out of Bounds

OPUS III Mind Fruit 1992

Artist Biography by

Opus III had a few hit songs in the early-'90s ambient house scene before lead vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw embarked on a successful venture later on in the decade as a freelance vocalist, working with some of dance music's most successful artists. The group's debut album for Atlantic, Mind Fruit (1992), featured the popular songs "It's a Fine Day" and "I Talk to the Wind." The group attained notoriety for merging ethereal female vocals with the ambient house sound synonymous with similar popular groups from the era like the Orb and Enigma. Also in 1992, while Opus III was experiencing their peak popularity, Hawkshaw worked with Orbital on their second album, the landmark Orbital 2. Opus III returned in 1994 with the follow-up album Guru Mother, which was a disappointment relative to the group's promising debut album, though it did feature the single "When You Made the Mountain." With the group's future put on hiatus, Hawkshaw returned to session work during the late '90s, working with producers like BT, Delerium, the Silent Poets, DJ Tiesto, and again with Orbital.

LODGER A Walk In The Park 1998

AllMusic Review by

One of Brit-pop's foremost "superbands," Lodger was created from the ashes of indie also-rans Powder and Delicatessen, both of which disbanded on the back of their genre's diminishing popularity by the late '90s. Not to be carried with the ebbing tide, vocalist Pearl Lowe and husband Danny Goffey of Supergrass, in a rare side project, joined forces with singer Neil Carlill and guitarist Will Foster (both with Delicatessen while the album was being made) to make a record worthy of a lot more than a final flourish to brief respective recording careers. With more than a passing similarity to Suede, there is more to Lodger than the obvious collation with Lush or Sleeper that accompanies any female-fronted British group. In fact, this release would sit alongside anything in a Supergrass fan's collection. The folky direction can be held up to that of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, while the frequent brass and string arrangements and rousing choruses of "Bones" and "Love Is the Game" allude to Blur. Distinctive though is the diversity channelled via difficult tempo and key changes, guitar twists, and haunting piano parts. From this period in British songwriting comes instantly identifiable four-minute pop songs on the downbeat subjects of heartache and headaches, drug use, and the complexities of society. Interspersed with dark folk-ballads, A Walk in the Park is high in content of vocal duets between Lowe and Carlill, which provide quirky diversions from the slow momentum of the album as a whole and its subject matter. Opening track "I'm Leaving" is the highlight, equally as a bright singalong and also as a creepy piano-laden ballad, as Carlill's distinctive straining vocal style is unlike anything you've ever heard of someone attempting emotional melodies. Its theme of a seething argument between lovers made it a British single-chart hit as audiences could relate to its updated trashy lyrics albeit in the traditional mould of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra. From an important decade in British music in terms of originality and inventive prose, this is an important release, although not commercially successful. Dedicated historians and fans of the bands involved need to seek this out and be pleasantly surprised by its unexpected original content.
