PEST 5000 (In-ter/a-bang/) 1996

AllMusic Review by

Pest released a very good 7" on the Harriet label ("Philosophically Dyslexic") before adding the 5000 to their name and a few vintage synths to their sound -- the full-length Interabang loses much of the clarity of this early work in favor of an occasionally jumbled indie-pop approach layered with unconventional arrangement and odd presentation. Despite this, Interabang is a fairly interesting release -- it's not as well-conceived or well-written as the listener might hope, but the unique sense of presentation rescues many tracks from indie-pop banality. The band doesn't always live up to the work of similar projects, however -- when they cross into Heartworms territory with "Botheration," they establish themselves as a decent but ultimately second-tier indie-pop unit.
