THE DYLANS Spirit Finger 1994

The neo-psychedelic British band the Dylans formed in Sheffield, England in 1989 around the nucleus of vocalist/bassist Colin Gregory and guitarists Jim Rodger and Andy Curtis. Before ever even performing live, the group won a contract with Beggars Banquet in the summer of 1990, and after recruiting keyboardist Quentin Jennings and drummer Garry Jones they made their concert debut in the early weeks of the following year. The Dylans' first single "Godlike" appeared not long after, reaching the Top Ten on the U.K. indie charts; after replacing Curtis with guitarist Andy Cook, they returned with the two-sided "Lemon Afternoon"/"My Hands Are Tied." After a third indie hit, "Planet Love," the Dylans issued their self-titled debut LP in October 1991. In the wake of a grueling tour, they resurfaced in 1992 with the single "Mary Quaint in Blue," even as the group seemed in a constant state of flux — after Jones was fired, Cook switched to drums, and Craig Scott was recruited on guitar; soon Jennings, who had taken a leave of absence to care for his ill wife, was replaced by keyboardist Ike Glover. By the time of their second LP, late 1993's Spirit Finger, the face of British pop music had altered dramatically, and the Dylans now seemed dated; the record fared poorly, and they soon disbanded.

I Hate the 90s Early Christmas Present

Don't Eat the Yellow Snow

Released around 1993
(notice the dot matrix print label)

One of the many benefits of working at a college radio station and being the music director was that I got to open up all the packages that came through the station. I usually didn't pay too much attention to the videos I got because most of them I thought sucked to high heaven. For some reason, I apparently chose to keep this one called Don't Eat the Yellow Snow. Released to promote Atlantic Records' bands and sent out to radio stations and music journalists all over the country, Don't Eat the Yellow Snow was exceptional in my opinion for the quality of most of the bands they chose and the video production. Standouts for me are Jawbox, The Lemonheads, Unsane and Bad Religion.
But here's the odd part...I just found this video in a box in the bottom of my closet a couple of weeks ago while rummaging through some old boxes looking for rare cassettes of 90's music and radio station ID's. I couldn't believe it when I pulled it out of the box. If I'd lost it I never would have noticed. But now, thanks to a nice friend of a friend who let me borrow his VCR DVD recorder, I burned a copy of it onto DVD. It's in stereo, it sounds fucking grand, and here it is as an early Christmas present. Feel free to download it and burn yourself a copy of it too. And if you find this posted somewhere else on the net, I can guarantee you they got it from here.
Oh, and Frank Zappa is nowhere to be found on this comp.
