KOREA GIRL Reunion 7 inch 1997

Discogs

Indie Rock band from San Jose, California. The group was formed in January 1996, and broke up in 1999 due to conflicts between the two singers. They released one CD (Korea Girl in 1997; rereleased in 1999 with additional bonus tracks) and one 7" (Reunion also in 1997) on Asian Man Records, and also appear on various Asian Man compilation CDs as well as a video/DVD. Korea Girl was declared Album of the Year in 1997 by radio station KSCU. The group's name was presumably inspired by the fact that Yi is of Korean descent. The cover of their self-titled album depicts, in cartoon fashion, a schoolgirl carrying two revolvers.

Korea Girl's music was generally melodic and understated, featuring both male and female vocals and using clean and undistorted guitars in the manner of such earlier indie rock groups as Blake Babies.

Papas Fritas Biography

by Gregory McIntosh

Formed in 1992, pop combo Papas Fritas began as a power trio when two high-school friends from Delaware, guitarist Tony Goddess and drummer Shivika Asthana, met up with bassist Keith Gendel while attending Tufts University in Massachusetts. The three recorded and released four-track albums for fun and performed at parties on and around campus, but never took the group seriously until a tape fell onto the desk of small record label Sunday Driver Records and the label approached Papas Fritas with plans to release a 7" of the group's work. The band consented and released Friday Night with the label in February of 1994. For the first time in their history, the members of Papas Fritas promoted their music and found more interest in their work from another small indie, though notably larger than Sunday Driver, Minty Fresh. Through Minty Fresh, Papas Fritas found a home to allow some growth. They tossed aside the four-track, built a more functional studio in their basement, and recorded their first effort for Minty Fresh, another 7" titled Passion Play/Lame to Be, in 1995. Both songs on the single served as the cornerstones to their first full-length, Papas Fritas, released later that same year.

Buzz Bomb! Review

by AllMusic

1998's BUZZBOMB! finds Minneapolis residents Dan Sarka and Peter Daniel staying in character as the three rural Michigan brothers Jim Jim, Bobby and Alan Vandalia, but the album mostly dispenses with the crypto-mythology of the band's 1995 debut, MACH V. Instead, these 11 songs are pretty much your standard cars-and-girls power pop, complete with songs called "Big Red Catalina" and "Hey Kari G." Sarka and Daniel are graduates of the '70s school of power pop, equally fond of Raspberries-style vocal harmonies and Cheap Trick-like guitar crunch. While not terribly lyrically or musically significant, BUZZBOMB! is more than entertaining. "The End of the World," "Charity At Home" and the Beatlesque "Say I'm Sorry" are particular highlights.

FAT DAY Burrega 1997

Discogs

Here's some fast thrashy noise punk to annoy your neighbors. The file contains more songs than listed here. - Blogatrix

Fat Day is a Boston-based noisecore band, formed in Cambridge, MA in 1992. Fat Day's conception as a standard guitar/bass/drums/vocals punk band is infused with a performance art aesthetic. For example, they have played dressed only in clear cellophane wrap or with vocalist Matt Pakulski locked inside a speaker cabinet for the duration of a show. Their 1997 tour of the UK and Ireland featured a fifth member playing saxophone that drew comparisons to Captain Beefheart, and for their 1998 tour of the U.S and Japan the band built a set of oscillators activated by choreographed dances on four small trampolines. These electronic instruments were later condensed into a more manageable helmet form that the band would wear and play songs on in the midst of their otherwise guitar-based set.

Closely associated with bands like Swirlies, Fat Day released a number of records through their own label 100% Breakfast! and other labels as well.

When I initially heard this, the first song sounded like early Polvo.

Meringue was formed in 1992 in Florida by guitarist Trey Conner and debuted with the five-song EP Meringue (Cherry Smash, 1994). Performing mainly instrumental pieces, they mixed the verve and imagination of Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and Gong. Their albums, Grandma's Supermarket House (Cherry Smash, 1995), and the monumental Music From The Mint Green Nest (Cherry Smash, 1996), employ a vast array of instruments.

Dirt Merchants Biography

by Greg Prato

Boston rockers Dirt Merchants were formed in March of 1992 by the guitar-drums brother duo of Mike and John Malone. Enlisting Maria Christopher on vocals and a college friend of Mike's on bass, Alex Kisch, Dirt Merchants issued a debut single shortly thereafter, "Mindfuck" b/w "Beware of Dog," released in 1993 on their own V-Hold label. Another single was issued in 1994, "Purple Barrel" b/w "Love Apnea," making the quartet one of Boston's fastest rising rockers on the scene (winning radio station WBCN's Rock 'n' Roll Rumble the same year). By 1995, the group was signed to the New York independent label Zero Hour, issuing their debut full-length in April of the same year, titled Scarified. The album attracted the attention of Epic, who signed the band and reissued the album in February of 1996.
