McCarthy Biography by Michael Sutton

The British band McCarthy is probably remembered more for their left-wing politics than their jangly sound. Formed in Barking, Essex, England, in 1985, McCarthy consisted of Malcolm Eden (vocals, guitar), Tim Gane (guitar), John Williamson (bass), and Gary Baker (drums). Gane was originally a drummer, but Eden taught him how to play a number of chords on a guitar. Both musicians were influenced by British punk groups such as the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Buzzcocks, and they covered their songs in small gigs. By the time Eden completed his studies at a university, his Marxist beliefs had grown deeper, reflected in his lyrics for McCarthy. In 1987, McCarthy released their debut LP I Am a Wallet. The album was virtually ignored by U.K. radio programmers, except for legendary British DJ John Peel. Because of Eden's political views, the band was often lumped in with less pop-oriented acts like Billy Bragg and the Redskins, comparisons that upset the group. The band's second album, The Enraged Will Inherit the Earth, appeared in 1989. However, after the group recorded their third full-length, 1990's Banking, Violence and the Inner Life Today, Eden felt there was no need to continue; he believed that McCarthy's creativity peaked with that LP. Moreover, he was burned out from touring. Consequently, the group split up and Gane formed Stereolab with his girlfriend Laetitia Sadier, who also sang on McCarthy's last album. Eden released material with Herzfeld.

MERCYLAND Spillage 1994

 Discogs

Mercyland is the Athens, Georgia band fronted by David Barbe before he was picked up by Bob Mould to form part of the power trio Sugar. Not surprisingly, the band sounds like Husker Du without Bob Mould and Grant Hart's songwriting chops. Other members included drummer Joel Suttles and guitarist Andrew Donaldson, and briefly drummer Harry Joiner and guitarist Mark Craig.

THE AMPS Tipp City 1995

Discogs

The Amps Biography by Heather Phares

After the overwhelming success of "Cannonball" and Last Splash took the Breeders by surprise -- and led to their quick burnout -- singer/songwriter/guitarist Kim Deal formed the Amps in 1994 as a way to release new material while the Breeders took a break. With her other group's drummer Jim MacPherson, Deal assembled a new band from members of other bands around her hometown of Dayton, OH, including Nathan Farley and Luis Lerma of the Tasties. Originally called Tammy & the Amps, the band sounded like a rougher, rawer version of the Breeder's skewed pop. The Tipp City EP heralded Pacer, their first and only album, which was released in late 1995. That year, the Amps toured with friends and like-minded acts such as Helium and Sonic Youth. The following year, Deal folded the Amps lineup into a new version of the Breeders -- which also included Pod-era member Carrie Bradley -- for a handful of California dates with Primus. As the Breeders' notoriously unstable lineup changed, all of the former Amps left the group within two years.

PRIMITIVE RADIO GODS Mellotron On! 1999

Primitive Radio Gods Biography by MacKenzie Wilson

The Primitive Radio Gods' smashing chart debut "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" was an unforgettable radio mainstay and MTV favorite during the summer of 1996. It quickly defined the band as another alterna-rock innovator integrating catchy hooks and a hip-hop/new wave mix. The debut album Rocket went gold, and earned the band top spots across the album and singles charts as well. Not too bad for frontman Chris O'Connor. This was a rock & roll fantasy come true for this air traffic controller, whose side gig, the I-Rails, had been struggling for ten years prior. However, the hype surrounding the PRG quickly faded. Music industry politics played into the scheme and before the new millennium dawned, the band's sophomore effort was scrapped and the band was dropped from Columbia. Another quickie deal from Hi-Fi/Sire Records came to the rescue, but that too failed when contractual differences and a shift in bandmates created more chaos for the PRG. A whirlwind time, more than three years since their debut, and the band played on. In early 2000, the PRG resurfaced with a complete roster including Jim Sparks, Tim Laurterio, and Luke McAuliffe. A deal with What Are Records? marked the second coming of this stereotyped one-hit wonder, and the long-awaited follow-up, White Hot Peach, was issued in early 2001. Sparks left the group the following year to pursue other projects, but the remaining members continued on. The independently released Still Electric, which moved the group in a more shoegazey direction, arrived in 2003, followed in 2006 by the like-minded Sweet Venus, and Out Alive in 2010.

Mellotron On! was PRG's second release but was scrapped by the label and subsequently, the band was dropped. - Blogatrix
