Artist Biography by

Named for a Wipers song, Germany's Alien Boys were one of the first European grunge bands. The group formed in the late '80s and released their debut album, Seeds of Decay, in 1990; their follow-up, Doom Picnic, arrived the following year and was produced by grunge pioneer Jack Endino. The group released a third album, Nekropolis, and toured extensively, but broke up in 1994.

BO BUD GREENE Whatever 1995

Bo Bud Greene played many a show here and every show was as good as the last. Their first show was under the name Paint which they later changed to Bo Bud Greene. I'm going to try to see if I still have the Paint tapes available. BBG also released a few 7 inch records. I remember one of the last shows they played here, we all went out to their van parked on the street by the club and smoked a joint. And as I am bringing the joint to my lips, a cop car drives by. Perfect. Didn't harsh my mellow though. The show went on.
One of the guitarists, Sean Mullens, got to jam with Bob Mould too. Pretty cool.

NOISE ADDICT Meet The Real You 1995

Noise Addict Biography by Jason Ankeny

Australian teen pop sensations Noise Addict formed in Bondi Beach in 1992; led by singer/songwriter Ben Lee -- all of 13 years old at the time of the band's formation -- the original lineup also included guitarist Doron Kalinko, bassist Daniel Mapp and drummer Saul Smith. After recording a demo, Noise Addict played their first live date; there they were discovered by promoter/Fellaheen Records honcho Steve Pavlovic, who passed along their tape to Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, who in turn agreed to issue the demo on his own Ecstatic Peace label as 1993's DEF. Another EP, The Taste in My Eyes, followed later that year before Lee's song "I Wish I Was Him" -- a biting satire on the Lemonheads' Evan Dando -- caught the attention of the Beastie Boys' Mike D., who immediately signed Noise Addict to his Grand Royal imprint to release 1994's Young and Jaded. A year later Lee issued his solo debut Grandpaw Would, but despite the exit of Kalinko (replaced by guitarist Romy Hoffman), Noise Addict soldiered on to release their first full-length effort, Meet the Real You, later in 1995. The group disbanded soon after.

WESLEY WILLIS Greatest Hits Volume 2

I think it was about 1997 or so when Wesley Willis played at Sluggo's here in Pensacola. It was Halloween night. I remember seeing him at the bar falling asleep on the counter. I loved the show - hearing him scream "Fuck you!" and "Suck a caribou's ass!" The best moment of all was getting up onstage to get head butted by him. I also will never forget how when he bumped my forehead my teeth rattled from the impact and the next day my forehead was sore.
Sadly, Wesley died of leukemia in 2003. What I loved the most about Wesley was how honest he was with how he felt. Doesn't everyone want to say at least once, "You need to leave me alone with your war hell ride, punk!"
R.I.P. Wesley.

CHAVEZ Ride The Fader 1996

Artist Biography by

Gone Glimmering
The angular indie rock unit Chavez was led by singer/guitarist Matt Sweeney, the former frontman of New Jersey's Skunk. Following the group's demise, Sweeney joined the New York band Wider, which included onetime Live Skull drummer James Lo; when Wider dissolved in 1992, Sweeney began playing with ex-Bullet Lavolta guitarist Clay Tarver. Lo joined not long after, and with bassist Davey Hoskins, Chavez cut its first demo recordings in late 1993. Following Hoskins' exit and the recruitment of bassist Scott Masciarelli (also known as Scott Marshall, the son of Happy Days creator Garry Marshall), the band made its live debut; soon, the anthemic 1994 debut single "Repeat the Ending" and a reputation for stunning live sets made Chavez a hot commodity on the New York club scene. Their acclaimed debut, Gone Glimmering, and the follow-up EP, Pentagram Ring, appeared in 1995; the full-length Ride the Fader followed a year later. The band ceased to record after that, but they did reunite on occasion for performances. Sweeney played with Guided by Voices and Zwan, and collaborated with Will Oldham on 2005's Superwolf; Tarver directed the series of "Got Milk?" commercials and was the screenwriter of 2001's Joy Ride; Lo continued to play in bands, including a brief stint in the Sands; Marshall, who had made appearances in just about all of his father's projects, became further involved in the film industry and directed Keeping Up with the Steins. In 2006, Matador reissued the band's two albums, EP, and 7" as a box set titled Better Days Will Haunt You. In 2016, Sweeney, Tarver, Marshall, and Lo reunited as Chavez, heading into the studio to record three new songs. The new material was issued as an EP, Cockfighters, by Matador in January 2017.

MAGNAPOP

1992

1994

Artist Biography by

Hot Boxing
This Athens, GA, band creates high-energy punk-pop with catchy hooks and literate lyrics. What makes Magnapop interesting (and different from many of the punk-pop bands out there) is the combination of Linda Hopper's smooth, unhurried vocals and the furious lashings of Ruthie Morris' guitar -- it creates a tension that makes the songs of this intelligent, underappreciated band all the more dramatic. Formed in 1987 by singer Linda Hopper (formerly of Oh OK), guitarist Ruthie Morris, drummer David McNair, and bassist Shannon Mulvaney, the group recorded a demo album with their friend Michael Stipe in 1992 which was released on Caroline Records. In 1994 the group released their "official" debut, Hot Boxing, on Priority. Hot Boxing was produced by another of the band's friends, Bob Mould, and features a more streamlined, intense approach than the quirky, off-kilter demos do. McNair was replaced by drummer Josh Freese before Rubbing Doesn't Help was released in 1996. The group continued tour for the rest of the '90s, then went on a lengthy hiatus before finally resurfacing with a new rhythm section, bassist Scott Rowe and drummer Chad Williams, and released Mouthfeel in 2005 on the Atlanta-based Daemon imprint.
