Verbow Biography by Gina Boldman

A branch-off of the Evanston, IL, duo Jason and Alison, Verbow is a power pop band greatly enhanced by singer/guitarist Jason Narducy's punk roots and Alison Chesley's mesmerizing cello. Jason and Alison had expanded into the band Skinny after adding drummer David Suycott and bassist Jason Block, but they soon changed their name to Verbow -- a British Skinny already had dibs on the name. Drummer Mark Doyle and bassist Luke Rothschild replaced Suycott and Block, respectively. Friend and fan Bob Mould produced the band's EP Holiday, as well as their first CD, Chronicles; both were released in 1997. Doyle subsequently left the group and was replaced by Mould's touring drummer Matt Hammon during the early-1999 recording of the band's next album; after the album was completed, Rothschild also departed, with former Lotus Crown bassist Lennie Dietsch coming onboard. Titled White Out and produced by Brad Wood, the album's release was delayed until the summer of 2000.

With far too many modern bands falling on the wrong side of Spinal Tap's "clever/stupid" demarcation, it's easy to mistake "uncategorizable" as a subgenre of the latter. Vegetarian Meat, the peripatetic basement-recording duo of Manish Kalvakota (guitar and drums) and Alex McAulay (everything else), doesn't help matters by hopping genre fences at random (not to mention an apparent aversion to playing live). But the quirky, slightly new wavey pop on the duo's lone longplayer does display some admirable influences: Brian Wilson, Half Japanese and the whole New Zealand school of shambling popsters. Vegetarian Meat's offbeat tuneage charts the ups'n'downs of lurve, with the songs' protagonist frequently being on the receiving end of flagellation (sometimes self-inflicted). Loser or not, songwriter McAulay works his charm by matching the musical arrangements to the lyrical ambiance—a fuzzy wash of guitars to accompany a whiny mood in "Pet," metallic, punkish power chords for a nastier temperament in "Silver and Gold," etc. In an optimistic moment, he soars with a rockist verve that recalls mid-period Who ("One Way Down"); waxing whimsical in "Trip," he channels vintage psychedelia and gives a passing nod to British folkies of the '60s. In a nutshell, no two songs on Let's Pet are alike, and the record would seem to signal the emergence of a talent worth citing in the same breath as Guided by Voices, the Grifters and Lou Barlow.

Artist Biography by Aaron Schatz

Tribe was one of the most popular bands in Boston in the late '80s and early '90s, but was never able to translate its local drawing power and multiple local awards into national success. The band was fronted by singer Janet LaValley, whose soaring voice and gothic queen looks (Siouxsie Sioux by way of Sandra Bullock won her a close local following and the Boston Phoenix award for Best Local Female Singer for three straight years. Bassist Greg LoPiccolo, guitarist Eric Brosius, and keyboardist (and occasional lead vocalist) Terri Barous wrote songs which combined power chords with dark lyrics and thick, goth-influenced keyboard textures. Drummer David Penzo rounded out the group.

Tribe first became prominent in Boston when their four-track demo for the song "Abort" was played regularly on local radio station WFNX. After three years of building a local following, two straight Boston Phoenix awards for Best Local band, and a self-released album, Here at the Home, Tribe finally attracted the attention of Warner Bros. and in 1991 released their major-label debut Abort. Abort repeated eight songs from the self-released album and added four more, but despite production by Gil Norton it was unable to make waves outside of New England. Penzo left the band after the recording of 1993's Sleeper, replaced by Boston session drummer Mike Levesque, but once again the band could not attain a national hit despite constant touring, and they broke up in 1994. Barous and Brosius married and began a career composing video game soundtracks, while LaValley tried a brief and unsuccessful solo career.

Gauge was a post-hardcore band from the suburbs of Chicago, IL who formed on New Years Day, 1991, and played their last show on October 6, 1994. In that time, the band released 2 LPs, 4 7"s (one of which was an extremely limited free giveaway with 2 songs culled from their original demo tape and other which was split with the band Grout Villa), and appeared on several compilations. A 10" EP of their final recordings was released after their break up.

In March 2010, the band reunited for 2 reunion shows in Chicago and Milwaukee.
