The Capitol City Dusters Biography

Fusing the sentiments of early hardcore and the sounds of D.C. post-punk, the Capitol City Dusters started off originally as the Dusters in 1996. Guitarist/vocalist Alec Bourgeois and drummer Benjamin Azzara got together when their respective Washington bands, Severin and Delta 72, split up. Bassist Bill Colgrove, whose hardcore band Foundation had done shows with Azzara's old band Junction, came down from Upstate New York to join. In a joint effort between Bourgeois' label Superbad Records and Dischord Records, the band released two vinyl-only albums, Forest Fire/Seventeen 7" in 1996 and a split 10" in 1997 with labelmates the Most Secret Method. Colgrove then left the band to start a web design business with Jawbox/Burning Airlines guitarist Bill Barbot, and the band renamed itself the Capitol City Dusters. Mark Lacasse (Sicken, Ghoti Hook) filled in on bass during the 1998 recording of Simplicity, after which Jesse Quitslund (Vile Cherubs, Please) took over. The Dusters then toured much of U.S. and Europe before returning home to work on a new album. They wouldn't emerge again until 2001, when they came out of their self-imposed vacation to work on a new album, 2002's Rock Creek.

Heavy issues aside, Artificial Joy Club sounds large, strong and melodic -- and intellectually accessible in both their music and lyrics. Their Interscope debut Melt turns out music both blunt and poignant, music that's emotive. Imported from Ottawa, Canada, Sal, guitarist Leslie Howe, bassist Tim Dupont, guitarist Michael Goyette and drummer Andrew Lamarche are not only great musicians, but outspoken and unapologetic. True to their heritage, however, they are funny and wryly observant. Drawn to junk/pop culture, urban folklore, and psychological introspection, Melt is strewn with references such as Vulcans, Kevorkian, gerbils, Forrest Gump, pogo sticks, cheeky monkeys and Pete Best.

Vigilantes of Love Biography

Like their labelmates Sonia Dada and Rusted Root, the Vigilantes of Love blended blues, gospel, folk-rock and country-rock. Formed in 1990 in Athens, Georgia, the group consisted of chief songwriter Bill Mallonee on vocals and acoustic guitars, Newton Carter on electric guitars and backing vocals, David LaBruyere on bass, and Travis Aaron McNabb on drums and percussion. Vigilantes of Love began as an acoustic duo, with just Mallonee and an accordionist; after releasing two independent albums as a duo, Mallonee added some other Athens-area local band veterans to go electric. Following two other indie albums, the band signed to Capricorn for 1994's Welcome to Struggleville and 1995's Blister Soul. After 1996's V.O.L., the band returned the following year with Slow Dark Train. Cross the Big Pond appeared in 1999, and in 2000 Vigilantes of Love issued Audible Sigh.

Aquadays Biography

The heartfelt style of melancholy lyrics have continually accompanied The Aquadays mood of electric pop since their 1993 formation. Based out of Gothenburg, Sweden, Lisa Aamot (electric organ), Martin Aamot (guitar/ synthesizer) and Klara Albinsson (vocals) have faced the inevitable comparisons to Abba and The Cardigans considering their influences and location. But with six years of playing throughout Europe without an album, the Aquaday's finally debuted with their Electric Songs on Apricot Records in 1999.

Smart Brown Handbag Review

Smart Brown Handbag's recording career was off to a pleasing start with this self-titled CD, which showed the L.A. band to be a promising and highly melodic alternative pop/rock unit with a knack for thoughtful, sensitive lyrics. Handbag tends to favor subtlety and understatement rather than immediacy; this is true of David Steinhart's singing and jangly guitars as well as sibling Jeff Steinhart's electric bass and Lynn Norton's organ and keyboards. And because the trio's introspective songs are as subtle and restrained as they are, they don't necessarily grab you right away or provide instant gratification. But after several listens, one realizes just how meaty songs like "Big Eyes," "Impossible," and "The Pearl" really are. Handbag's lyrics can be maudlin at times, but they can also be poignant and touching. "Fight It Off" examines a man's struggle with depression, while "Something Missing" describes a couple whose relationship is falling apart just before their son's second birthday. The couple is at odds, and it is the child who will inevitably suffer the most. This album wasn't a big seller, but many of those who heard it agreed that Handbag had a lot of potential.

Artist Biography

Zuckerbaby got their start in the early '90s, first performing under the name Calliope. Members are lead singer/songwriter and guitarist Andy Eichhorn, bassist Brian Doss, guitarist and singer Reed Shimozawa, and drummer Wayne Stadler. In 1998, Doss left the group, and bassist Ted Koti was brought in to fill the empty spot. He was later replaced by bassist Ed Teigs. Drummer Kurt Dahle temporarily stepped in when Stadler took a short break.

The group started out performing at small gigs to gain experience and fans. Soon, Zuckerbaby was doing opening spots for major acts across much of Canada. As word of mouth spread and the band's fan base grew, the music world began to take notice. In 1996, Mercury Records signed the group to a recording contract. Zuckerbaby entered the Sundae Sound Studios and began work on their debut album, a self-titled offering that hit the market in 1997 with 12 pop/rock tracks. Three singles came from the album: "Shampoo," "Andromeda," and "Heavy." Positive reviews and music videos rotating in top spots on MuchMusic helped boost the group's popularity. A few of the other songs on the superb debut are "Venus," "Clouds," "Twice as Hard," and "Bellybutton Queen."

When the new millennium rolled in, Zuckerbaby was ready with a long-awaited sophomore album, Platinum Again. With the new tunes, some filled with heavy guitar riffs, the band left most of their pop behind to pick up a little more rock.

Artist Biography

The Boston, MA-based trio Quintaine Americana is comprised of singer/guitarist Robert Earl Dixon, drummer Jason Beauregard King, and bassist Marc Upton Schleicher. Originally from Drew, Mississippi, the band decided to relocate when they realized there wasn't much of a music scene in their hometown. They instantly acquired a dedicated following based on their live show, with the local press describing them as a cross between Big Black and the Birthday Party. After receiving even more local acclaim, Quintaine Americana signed to the independent record company Cherry Disc, who released their debut album, Needles, in 1996. Local praise soon spread to national, particularly in Alternative Press. On the subsequent tour, the band opened for Karma To Burn, Jesus Lizard, Helmet, Girls Against Boys, and U.S. Maple.

When the band began writing material for their follow up, they treated their fans to some unreleased songs on a pair of compilations (Wicked Deluxe on WickedDisc and Take Your Medicine on Wonderdrug), while bassist Schleicher played in two side projects, Crack Torch and Coke Dealer. With Shellac's Bob Weston (Sebadoh, Hurl, etc.) signed on as producer, Q.A. entered the studio in August of '97, eventually emerging with a fine sophomore effort, Decade of the Brain. Upon its release in early '98, the band hit the road again.

Jeff Turzo and David Reilly both grew up in small-town Pennsylvania, experimenting with computers and keyboards until one night in 1993, they decided to form a band around an industrial/techno song they had recorded for a party. The duo recorded four additional songs, and got an audition with Rick Rubin, president of American Recordings. Rubin liked what he heard, and signed Turzo and Reilly to his Onion subsidiary. They recorded a self-titled EP in 1995, then added guitarist Andrew McGee and drummer Adam Kary for live shows. God Lives Underwater's debut album, Empty, was released later that year, followed in 1998 by Life in the So-Called Space Age.

Olympia, WA experimental pop duo the Need teamed singer/drummer Rachel Carns (formerly of Kicking Giant) and guitarist/bassist Radio Sloan. Debuting in 1996 with a contribution to the Destination compilation, the Need issued a series of seven-inches on labels including Kill Rock Stars and Outpunk prior to releasing a self-titled full-length on Chainsaw in 1997; more compilation appeances preceded the appearance of their sophomore effort, 2000's The Need Is Dead. That same year Carns and Sloan also co-wrote the indie rock opera The Transfused -- first performed at Olympia's Capitol Theater, its soundtrack was also issued on Yo Yo. 2000 found the Need busy touring Europe and North America with Blonde Redhead and working on a split single with Le Tigre
