CARBON Autoboot 1994

Discogs

Carbon was first conceived in April 1983 and emerged from work on the fringes of the early hardcore and improv scenes with the bands I/S/M, The Hi-Sheriffs of Blue, and Mofungo. Carbon debuted at the Speed Trials festival in Soho in May 1983, alongside performances by Lydia Lunch, The Fall, Swans, Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys, and Toy Killers. The name appeared earlier as a song-title on the 1981 disc ISM and seemed perfect for the band concept: a sound that would be both earthy and ethereal, groove-oriented but jagged, and powered by hacked science and punk mania. In addition to a doubleneck guitar/bass, Sharp focussed on soprano sax and bass clarinet as well as using invented string/percussion instruments: slabs, pantars, and violinoid. No digital effects were used - all sounds were generated using extended techniques, amplifier distortion, and volume.

THE MUMMIES VS. THE WOLFMEN The Mummies Vs. The Wolfmen 2 x 7 inch 1991

Discogs

The Mummies are an American garage punk band formed in San Bruno, California, in 1988. Exhibiting a raw and lo-fi sound, dubbed "budget rock", the Mummies' rebellious attitude and distinctive performance costumes exerted an influence on garage punk and garage rock revival acts later in the decade, as well as in the 1990s. Their recorded output was intentionally completed with poor, cheap equipment, including their first and only studio album Never Been Caught, which was released after the group's initial break-up. Since then, the Mummies have engaged in several reunion concerts and tours, including appearances in Europe and the US sporadically through to recent years.

The Wolfmen were a 60's inspired garage rock band who used reverb sounding vocals and fuzzy guitar. - Blogatrix

NATACHA ATLAS Diaspora 1997

Discogs

Natacha Atlas Biography by Craig Harris

Belgian-born singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and classical belly dancer Natacha Atlas is possessed of a throaty, expressive alto and offers a multilingual vocal approach to the fusion of Arabic and South Asian musics with Western styles, from electronica to pop to jazz standards. As a solo artist and in well-documented collaborations with more than 100 others (Peter Gabriel, Jean-Michel Jarre, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and Belinda Carlisle among them), her music was born from her family's heritage of Egyptian, Palestinian, Moroccan, and Sephardic ethnicities. Her intensely rhythmic vocal style was heard outside Europe first with Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart on the hit album Rising Above Bedlam in 1991. She served as lead vocalist and belly dancer with world fusion electro band Transglobal Underground, starting with their dancefloor hit single "Temple Head." She is a relentless experimenter. Her solo albums, beginning with 1995's downtempo fusion set Diaspora, have charted across the Arab world. In 1998 she delivered an Arabic fusion cover of Françoise Hardy's pop chanson "Mon Amie en Rose" that charted in Europe. Her 2006 offering, Mish Maoul, wed Arabic, electronic, and organic beats to Latin sounds and bossa nova. In 2008 she fronted the traditional Arabic Mazeeka Ensemble on Ana Hina. She took on British folk with 2010's Riverman EP, that featured her charting cover of Nick Drake's signature tune alongside a host of club remixes. In 2016 she delved into jazz with Myriad Road, produced by trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, and Eros with Paolo Fresu and Omar Sosa. She has since performed with her old friends in Transglobal Underground while continuing to record on her own, releasing Strange Days in 2019.

TRANSGLOBAL UNDERGROUND International Times 1994

Discogs

Transglobal Underground Biography by Steve Huey

TransGlobal Underground is a U.K.-based collective fusing as many different kinds of world music as its members can get their hands on. The group's core is composed of vocalist Natacha Atlas (who has recorded with Jah Wobble, Apache Indian, and her own band, Atlas Project), keyboardist Alex Kasiek, drum programmer Man Tu, and founder, bassist, and sampler Count Dubulah. The project grew out of a mutual love for dance, avant-garde, Arabic, and world music and draws on each member's listening tastes and cultural backgrounds. Their debut album, Dream of 100 Nations, was released in 1994, quickly followed by International Times. After 1995's Interplanetary Meltdown, TransGlobal Underground returned in 1997 with Psychic Karaoke. Rejoice, Rejoice followed a year later and Yes Boss Food Center appeared in spring 2001.
