THE CANDY SKINS Space I'm In 1991

Artist Biography by

Space I'm In
Emerging from the same Oxford, England pop scene which also yielded Radiohead and Supergrass, the Candyskins were formed in 1989 by frontman Nick Cope, his guitarist brother Mark, lead guitarist Nick Burton, bassist Karl Shale and drummer John Halliday. Debuting with the UK hit single "Submarine Song," the group was soon signed by Geffen, which issued their LP The Space I'm In in 1990; Fun? followed in 1993, but the Candyskins' major label tenure was largely disappointing, and two years later they signed with the British label Ultimate. After scoring a major hit at home with the single "Monday Morning," the group issued their comeback LP Sunday Morning Fever in 1997; Death of a Minor TV Celebrity, recorded with new bassist Brett Gordon, followed the next year.

THE GRAYS Ro Sham Bo 1994

Artist Biography by

Ro Sham Bo
A ramshackle collective of four musicians who all hated playing in bands, the Grays comprised ex-Jellyfish members Jason Falkner and Jon Brion, Buddy Judge, and Dan McCarroll. After coming together in 1993, the group released just one album, Ro Sham Bo, before amicably packing it in. Falkner later began a solo career, while Brion worked with Aimee Mann, eels, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore

These particular CMJ promo CDs were sent along with a fantastic and info filled music magazine by the same name: College Music Journal. CMJ magazine was available to subscribers only which consisted of record labels, radio stations, promoters and anyone who worked in music media. The subscription per year was a staggering $325. CMJ was not the same CMJ magazine which was released to the general public and available at local bookstores. I really looked forward to the newest CMJ to check out the new artists on the promo CDs and read all about the latest music happenings. I used to own stacks of these CDs but got rid of them over a period of time. Unfortunate for me now. So I'm sharing these rare releases to you. Hope you enjoy.

If you'd like to hear more of these, please leave a comment and I will see if I can dig up some more.

FUCK Pardon My French 1997

Discogs

Fuck was formed in Oakland, California in 1993. The members met while stuck in a police holding cell over the weekend, and wrote a few songs while in jail.[1] They released a self-titled cassette called Fuck, and a single, MonkeyBeautyShotgun on their own imprint, Rhesus Records, in 1994. (The songs from the cassette would eventually find their way onto later releases.[2]) They released their second full-length album Pretty...Slow in 1996. The album was ultimately released on three different labels. Their third album, Baby Loves a Funny Bunny, was also released in 1996.

The band then signed to Matador Records, who released the albums Pardon My French in 1997 and Conduct in 1998. According to Timothy Prudhomme, the band were told by a Matador marketing director that they needed to change the name of the band. They refused to give in.

CHRIS WHITLEY Living With the Law 1991

Christopher Becker Whitley (August 31, 1960 – November 20, 2005) was an American blues singer-songwriter and guitarist.

Highly acclaimed by critics, Whitley achieved modest mainstream success, but had a devoted following. Whitley's style was rooted primarily in blues, but drew on an array of influences and was constantly changing. In 2001, the New York Times described his arc as "restless, moving into noise-rock and minimalist jazz evoking Chet Baker and Sonic Youth as much as Robert Johnson".
