DRUNKEN BOAT Drunken Boat 1991

Back in about 1991 or so, Drunken Boat made its way to Pensacola. Of course I went to go see them after hearing this CD. The singer was getting into the song he was singing, moving his feet and flapping his arms when this drunk guy named Jeff got all excited and ended up knocking the microphone and stand right into the singer's teeth. Ouch. Nevertheless, the show continued. The singer and the rest of us weren't too happy with Drunken Jeff but we did like Drunken Boat.

Copping their name from a Rimbaud poem, New York's Drunken Boat emerged from the same downtown '80s scene that spawned Bongwater, King Missile and Hypnolovewheel. Led by poet Todd Colby and featuring the twin guitars of Steve Gross and Todd Serbousek, Drunken Boat merged Colby's literary sensibility with driving off-kilter indie rock.

Drunken Boat, produced by ex-Hugo Largo leader Tim Sommer, teems with smart, concise songs characterized by Colby's passionate, aggro vocals, propulsive tom-heavy drumming by Colby's brother Michael and fine guitar work (Steve Gross and Todd Serbousek) throughout. While owing an obvious debt to Patti Smith, Wire, Captain Beefheart and the Fall, the avant-garage approach and Colby's penetrating songs clearly marked the quintet as a band to watch. And don't miss the great cover of Hüsker Dü's "What's Going On."

Drunken Boat's brand of edgy indie rock was swamped in the wake of the post-Nirvana tidal surge. The artsy last-gasp of Dressy Hat came and went virtually unnoticed, but the band's influence could clearly be heard later in the decade in such bands as Soul Coughing and Guided by Voices.

Since the band's demise, Colby has continued to write and perform spoken word, publishing a book of poems, Riot in the Charm Factory, and creating poemfone, a daily dial-a-poem telephone service.

Cold Water Flat Biography by Michael Sutton

The alternative trio Cold Water Flat were caught in the Nirvana-fueled hype machine of the early '90s, when every young American band with angst-laden lyrics and dirty guitars was hailed as the Next Big Thing. Like countless others, the group never fulfilled such lofty expectations; then again, like many bands caught in the grunge sweepstakes, they weren't aiming for rock stardom anyway.

Cold Water Flat was formed by Paul Janovitz (vocals, guitar), Ted Silva (bass), and Paul Harding (drums) at the University of Massachusetts in 1990. Like Buffalo Tom, the band of Janovitz's brother Bill Janovitz, Cold Water Flat found a supportive audience in Boston. Janovitz moved to New York in 1992, and the group was on the verge of splitting up when the European label Play It Again Sam expressed interest in them. The band then recorded the album Listen, released in America by Sonic Bubblegum and overseas by Play It Again Sam in 1993. The group eventually signed with Fort Apache/MCA Records, and their self-titled major-label debut appeared in 1995. However, despite some airplay on college stations, Cold Water Flat didn't catch on nationally, and they disbanded. In the late '90s,

MERCY RULE Providence 1994

Mercy Rule played in Memphis in 95 or 96 where I caught their show at Barristers. They were always full of energy live and for some reason that night, Jon was really thrashing and at the end of the show began to bash the stage floor in with the mic stand. He then of course reimbursed the bar for the broken floor. And I still have my Mercy Rule t-shirt.

OLEANDER February Son 1999

Oleander Biography by Jason Ankeny

An alternative pop band from Sacramento, CA, Oleander enjoyed a brief flash of popularity in 1999, when the singles "Why I'm Here" and "I Walk Alone" found a home on mainstream rock radio. The band was originally formed in 1995 by singer/guitarist Thomas Flowers, guitarist Ric Ivanisevich, bassist Doug Eldridge, and drummer Fred Nelson, Jr. Named for the poisonous wildflowers growing throughout the Northern California region, Oleander made their studio debut in 1996 with a self-titled EP; a full-length album, Shrinking the Blob, followed in mid-1997. The latter record launched a local hit with "Down When I'm Loaded," and Oleander parlayed that success into a major-label deal with Universal.

February Son arrived in 1999, sporting the two aforementioned singles as well as a new drummer, Scott Devours. February Son reached gold status by mid-2000, and the band's experimental follow-up effort, Unwind, spawned a Top 40 hit ("Champion") in 2001. Unwind failed to gain much traction beyond its one single, however, and Oleander were soon sent packing from the Universal label. Signing with Sanctuary Records instead, they issued Joyride in 2003 and received a strong review from Rolling Stone magazine. The album didn't return Oleander to national popularity, however, and the musicians soon began pursuing different projects, effectively breaking up the band in 2004.

REVOLVER Baby's Angry 1992

Artist Biography by

Revolver was a heavily melodic shoegaze band that released a trio of singles on Hut (Heaven Sent and Angel, Crimson, and Venice) a compilation of those singles, and one studio LP before calling it quits in the early '90s. Unlike a lot of their peers, Revolver focused on songs more than sounds, almost to an overambitious fault. Formed in London in 1990, the band consisted of Mat Flint (guitar/vocals), Hamish Brown (bass), and Nick Dewey (drums). By 1993, Flint had joined Hot Rod, who released a record in 1993 on Caroline. He eventually joined Death in Vegas as their bassist.

G. LOVE AND SPECIAL SAUCE G. Love And Special Sauce 1994

 Discogs

Artist Biography by Greg Prato

Coast to Coast Motel G. Love & Special Sauce are a Philadelphia-based trio whose laid-back, sloppy blues sound is quite unique, as it encompasses the sound/production of classic R&B and recent rap artists (the Beastie Boys, in particular). The group -- G. Love (born Garrett Dutton) on guitar/vocals/harmonica, Jeff Clemens on drums, and Jim Prescott on upright bass -- released their self-titled debut in 1994 on OKeh/Epic. It received enthusiastic reviews and nearly went gold on the strength of the MTV-spun video for "Cold Beverage." The group toured heavily, also landing a subsequent spot on the H.O.R.D.E. tour, and found a receptive young audience. They followed up this success with the more mature Coast to Coast Motel in 1995. Although it didn't sell as well as the debut, it was definitely a stronger album. On tour, the group nearly broke up due to bickering over finances. They decided to take a break from each other, while G. Love worked on a new album with three different bands (All Fellas Band, Philly Cartel, and King's Court) and special guest Dr. John.

Yeah, It's That Easy Soon, though, G. Love & Special Sauce made amends, and the next album featured Special Sauce plus combinations of the three other groups. Yeah, It's That Easy was released in October 1997, and it turned out to be a soul-inflected effort, more similar to their debut than their second album. G. Love & Special Sauce soon embarked on another world tour, returning in 1999 with Philadelphonic. Released in 2001, Electric Mile was another solid release, but it was also G. Love's most schizophrenic album yet, incorporating hip-hip, funk, psychedelia, blues, and soul in equal and ambitious measure. Mile was followed by extensive touring. By 2004 and the Hustle LP, G. Love had eased up a little on the kitchen sink approach, offering instead a cohesive, dry groove reminiscent of his earliest efforts. Hustle was also the first G. Love release under Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records banner. It made sense; the two had been pals at least since Philadelphonic, on which Johnson had guested. His move from Sony spawned The Best of G. Love & Special Sauce, but G. Love wasn't done. Special Sauce did a series of shows in 2004 with Johnson and fellow Brushfire artist Donavon Frankenreiter, and the trio also found time to issue a brief live EP before 2006's Lemonade. The live album A Year & a Night with G. Love & Special Sauce appeared in 2007. The studio album Superhero Brother followed in 2008. After a six-year break, the original G. Love & Special Sauce lineup (featuring Clemens and Prescott) reunited for 2014's Sugar. A year later, the band released Love Saves the Day on Brushfire Records. Appearing in October 2015, the album featured a slew of special guests including Lucinda Williams, Citizen Cope, and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos. Early in 2020, G. Love & Special Sauce delivered The Juice, an album co-produced with bluesman Keb' Mo'.
