JACKOPIERCE Bringing on the Weather 1994

Artist Biography by

One of the hardest-touring bands of the '90s, Jackopierce slipped under the mainstream's radar to earn a widespread following on college campuses with their pleasant acoustic folk-pop. Guitarists/singers Jack O'Neill and Cary Pierce founded the duo in 1988, while both were attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas as theater majors. Honing a charmingly simple, low-key sound centered around vocal harmonies and acoustic guitars, the two developed a strong local following around the Dallas area. In 1991, they self-released an eponymous first album on their own Rhythmic Records, and embarked on a grueling touring schedule that helped cultivate a national collegiate following. Two more self-released albums -- the 1992 fan favorite Woman as Salvation and 1993's partly new Live From the Americas -- helped expand that following, as did an extensive nationwide mailing list that kept their fan base well-informed (in the days just prior to the explosion of the Internet). Jackopierce's DIY spirit was rewarded with a major-label contract from A&M in 1994. Their debut album, Bringing on the Weather, was produced by T-Bone Burnett, who added extra instruments to flesh out their sound. Virtually ignored by the mainstream media, the album nonetheless sold over 100,000 copies. In its wake, O'Neill and Pierce added a full-time rhythm section in bassist Clay Pendergrass and drummer Earl Darling. Their next effort, 1996's Finest Hour, was a fully electrified break from their long-established acoustic sound. However, it failed to break the band into the mainstream. In late 1997, they decided to break up and move on, and embarked on a national farewell tour. They also issued the double-disc retrospective Decade, which featured a smattering of live performances and unreleased tracks. Both O'Neill and Pierce continued to write and record on their own; O'Neill also moved to New York and joined the Bat Theater Company. In late 2002, Jackopierce decided to reunite and hit the road once again, to the delight of their still-active fan base.

SAM PHILLIPS Martinis and Bikinis 1994

Artist Biography by

The acid pop singer/songwriter born Leslie Phillips earned the nonsensical nickname "Sam" as a child; only when she was recording her debut album did she finally hear of the other, more renowned Sam Phillips and learn of his legacy as the founder of Sun Records, the label which launched the careers of Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. In retrospect, however, her relative distance from the history and conventions of pop music may have been in her favor and accounted for the fresh perspective her work offered; a critic's darling, Phillips sold few records, but her songs won widespread praise not only from the press but also from her fellow performers.

Beyond Saturday Night
Born in 1962, Phillips was raised in Glendale, California. As a child she became fascinated by philosophy and religion, primarily fundamentalism; she began writing songs at the age of 14 as an outlet for exploring her Christian beliefs, as well as for coping with family strife. In 1984, under the name Leslie Phillips, she released her first LP, Beyond Saturday Night, on the contemporary Christian label Word. Within the limited framework of the Christian rock community, Phillips became a star; her records, which also included 1984's Dancing with Danger and 1985's Black and White in a Grey World, regularly sold upwards of 200,000 copies, and she was a tremendous live draw while touring churches and coffeehouses.
The Turning
With the aptly titled The Turning, released in 1987, Phillips first teamed with producer T-Bone Burnett, a renowned pop producer who also helmed Bob Dylan's voyage into Christianity. After the album's release, she publicly denounced her label as a right-wing propaganda machine, and announced her retirement from CCM; disavowing all of her previous work, she adopted the name Sam on a permanent basis and, with Burnett's assistance, landed a contract with Virgin Records. With Burnett again in the producer's seat, she emerged in 1988 with her secular debut, The Indescribable Wow, which earned vast acclaim not only for her powerful vocals, penetrating lyrics, and gorgeous melodies, but also for the record's lush, Baroque production.
Cruel Inventions
Phillips and Burnett married prior to the release of 1991's darker, more experimental Cruel Inventions, which featured a guest appearance from Elvis Costello. With 1994's Grammy-nominated Martinis and Bikinis, her sound flirted closely with Beatlesque popcraft; the album's finale, a cover of John Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth," further drove the comparisons home. After making her feature film debut in the 1995 blockbuster Die Hard with a Vengeance, Phillips returned with 1996's Omnipop (It's Only a Flesh Wound Lambchop), another departure which touched upon lounge pop and industrial sounds; on the song "Slapstick Heart," she even shared songwriting credits with the members of R.E.M. Zero Zero Zero: The Best of Sam Phillips followed in early 1999.
Fan Dance
In 2001, Phillips began rethinking her approach to music, and that year she released Fan Dance, her first album for Nonesuch Records. Produced by Burnett, Fan Dance abandoned the ornate pop sound of their previous work together in favor of spare and casual semi-acoustic settings. The album was a critical success, and a similarly styled follow-up, A Boot and a Shoe, appeared in 2004, followed by Don't Do Anything in 2008. After that release she left Nonesuch and began a project called Long Play, where she spent a year and a half releasing EPs every two months (five in all) and an album (Cameras in the Sky) at the project's end in 2011. Along the way she shared videos, outtakes, and extra tracks on her website, and self-released a compliation of tracks from the project called Solid State: Songs from the Long Play. Around this time she began working on her friend Amy Sherman-Palladino's new TV show Bunheads, scoring each epsiode, just as she did on Sherman-Palladino's long-running (2000-2007) show The Gilmore Girls. At the same time, she also began work on a new album, Push Any Button, which was released on her own Littlebox label in summer 2013.

RAIN LIKE THE SOUND OF TRAINS self titled 1994

Discogs

Artist Biography by

Sadly, time has all but forgotten Rain Like the Sound of Trains, despite the fact that the Washington, D.C.-based band issued an incredible album through long-running and well-respected label Dischord, a split release with their own imprint, Rebel Music. They made incredible music that opened many minds and hearts to alternative political ideas and ways of living. They also had a couple of single releases to their credit by the time they disbanded in 1995. Rain Like the Sound of Trains' music was funky, quirky, very rhythmic, and percussion-based, with jangely, clean guitars, fluid bass lines, and a dual vocalist approach. Their sound confounded many more traditionally minded punk listeners yet astonished many more fans of punk rock, indie rock, and other styles of music with its depth, dexterity, and the overall level of musicianship amongst the band's earnest members. Rain Like the Sound of Trains specialized in delivering educational, informative, and challenging anthems against the status quo, questioning the American educational system, the concept of history, diet and nutrition, the logging industry, the two-party political system, and consumer culture with-well articulated, personalized, and somehow non-preachy lyrics. The band was formed by some ex-members of the seminal D.C. punk outfit Soulside -- a group that would also spawn Girls Against Boys. They issued a 7" single in 1993, containing the songs "Bad Man's Grave" and "Cooking With Anger." A second 7" followed featuring the song "What I Want," which also included a moving re-interpretation of the Clash classic "Washington Bullets." In 1994, they entered Texas' Sweatbox studios with producer Tim Kerr and recorded what would be their only full-length release. Graphic artist/musician Jason Farrell designed the packaging -- printed on 100 percent recycled paper -- for the self-titled album. The CD version also included both previous 7" releases. Shortly before issuing another small release (four songs recorded by Geoff Turner at WGNS Studios in December 1994 and released the following year as a 7" by Southern Records), the group went their separate ways, with members going on to join Sevens, Slowdime, and the Sorts, among other notable bands.

THREE MILE PILOT Another Desert Another Sea 1997

Three Mile Pilot Biography by Steve Huey

San Diego's Three Mile Pilot are perhaps best known to the indie rock world at large for supplying key personnel to Touch & Go buzz band the Black Heart Procession. Still, they spent much of the '90s near the forefront of a surprisingly active local indie scene. Three Mile Pilot made their mark with distinctively moody, bass-centered arrangements (in fact, they started out with no guitar at all) and a prog rock aesthetic that often resulted in long, winding, multi-sectioned song structures. Their abrupt shifts in key, rhythm, and volume earned them comparisons to math rockers like Slint and Don Caballero, but their poppier moments were more akin to the Pixies or Nirvana. After several unique albums for local indie Headhunter, the band went on hiatus as its leaders focused on other projects.

Three Mile Pilot were formed in San Diego circa 1991 as a trio featuring vocalist Pall A. Jenkins (aka Paulo Zappoli), bassist Armistead Burwell Smith IV (aka Zach, aka ABS#4), and drummer Tom Zinser. At times, they were augmented by horn player Jim French. This lineup signed to Headhunter and issued its debut album, Na Vucca Do Lupu, in 1992. In its wake, Jenkins took up guitar, giving the instrument a dry run on the 1993 EP Circumcised. For the group's second album, 1994's The Chief Assassin to the Sinister, Smith contributed piano and cello, further broadening Three Mile Pilot's textural palette. The album caught the attention of major label Geffen, which reissued it in 1995 with several additional tracks. However, the band's tenure at Geffen was stormy and very short, and it soon returned to Headhunter.

Three Mile Pilot added a full-time pianist, Tobias Nathaniel, for the recording of their third album, Another Desert, Another Sea, released in 1997. A self-titled five-song EP followed on the Gravity label, as well as a series of 7" singles for assorted tiny indies. During this period, Jenkins and Nathaniel broke away to form the Nick Cave-influenced Black Heart Procession, who earned a deal with Touch & Go starting with their second record, and built an underground following that grew to eclipse Three Mile Pilot's. While both Jenkins and Nathaniel remained official members of Three Mile Pilot, the band went on hiatus indefinitely, during which time Smith and Zinser joined with San Diego native Rob Crow (Heavy Vegetable, Thingy, etc.) in the off-kilter indie pop band Pinback. In 2000, Headhunter released a double-CD compilation of Three Mile Pilot singles, outtakes, and rarities titled Songs from an Old Town We Once Knew. Although Three Mile Pilot continued to work on new material from time to time, the relative success (and touring commitments) of the bandmembers' alternate projects effectively precluded an end to the hiatus. Then, seemingly out of nowhere 13 years after Another Desert, Another Sea, Smith, Jenkins, and Zinser reunited to record a new studio album titled The Inevitable Past Is the Future Forgotten, which was released in the fall of 2010.
