TRANS AM Who Do We Think You Are? 1999

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Sean Cooper

Initially associated with the mid-'90s post-rock scene centered around Tortoise, Ui, Labradford, and the Thrill Jockey, Kranky, UHF, and Southern labels, Trans Am's extreme, somewhat humorous reorientation of the clichés and conventions of rock music, primarily through either technical (exaggerated displays of skill) or instrumental (electronics, effects) deviations continued well into the 2000s and 2010s.

Formed in Washington, D.C. in 1990, the group didn't begin seriously recording until 1995, after its members (Phil Manley, Nathan Means, and Sebastian Thomson) finished college. Their self-titled debut, on the Chicago-based Thrill Jockey label, was recorded after just a few rehearsals back together, and contained instrumental, largely improvised versions of simple rock-oriented figures based loosely (and, again, quite humorously) on '70s and '80s popular and progressive bands such as Boston, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and Yes. Produced by Tortoise's John McEntire at Chicago's Idful Studios, the album was instantly (if somewhat ironically) lauded as an example of post-rock (an association that proves the meaningless of the genre and Trans Am's own relation to it), in turn leading to a short live tour as Tortoise's opening act.

The group returned in the fall of 1996 with a self-titled EP of somewhat retro electro-funk experiments (released by Happy Go Lucky) that brought to the fore an affection for electronics previously reserved either for between-time studio distraction or the brief interludes separating the meatier segments of their debut. With 1997's Surrender to the Night, however, Trans Am expanded that approach to album length, with tributes to Kraftwerk, Hashim, Can, and New Order dominating and only a few recognizably "rock" songs included. Also signaling a change in focus was the expanded role electronics would play in their live performances; where earlier incarnations of the group included noodly Casio interludes that never grew beyond a sideshow, Surrender's more electronics-heavy material meant more of the stage space was given over to analog machines, trigger devices, and MIDI-wired beatboxes.

Trans Am's inclusion on the Mille Plateaux label's double-CD compilation In Memoriam Gilles Deleuze (alongside Cristian Vogel, Beequeen, Mike Ink, and Atom Heart, as well as labelmates Rome and Oval) also helped introduce the band to audiences in Europe, where the group found similar popularity as such electronic/acoustic hybrids as Flying Saucer Attack and Stereolab. A fourth album, Futureworld, followed in 1999, and a year later the group returned with its most expansive album yet, The Red Line, recorded in the band's own National Recording Studio. In 2002, Trans Am released T.A. -- another foray into late-'80s and early-'90s electro-rock. The ironic, political Liberation followed in early 2004; after the album's release, the members of Trans Am scattered across the globe on a planned, two-year hiatus. Means ended up in Auckland, New Zealand, and the bandmembers convened there to begin sessions for their next album at MAINZ, a local recording school. After completing the album at Brooklyn's Okropolis studio, the results, Sex Change, were released in early 2007. A live album, What Day Is It Tonight?, appeared in 2009. The enigmatically named album Thing was issued in spring 2010. During the next four years, the group worked on their tenth album in between the members' other commitments, which included Manley's work with Life Coach and Thomson's work with Baroness. Volume X arrived in 2014. The band returned in 2017 with the vinyl-only album California Hotel, a set of songs inspired by My Bloody Valentine, David Gilmour, John Carpenter and Sade that was a Record Store Day release.

THE NEIGHBORHOODS Hoodwinked 1990

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Mark Deming

Led by singer and guitarist David Minehan, the Neighborhoods were a Boston-based rock band whose sound and approach found them residing in several camps at once, fusing the tuneful approach of a power pop group, the rebellious attitude of a punk band, and the big sound and swagger of a traditional hard rock act. The Neighborhoods were formed in 1977, with Minehan joined by Jim Bowman on bass and "Careful" Mike Quaglia on drums, and the band soon made a name for itself playing at local clubs such as Cantone's and The Rat. In 1979, John Hartcorn replaced Bowman on bass and the Neighborhoods got an important break when they won the WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble, a "Battle of the Bands" sponsored by Boston's most influential rock radio station (they came in first over a field of competitors that included local legends Mission of Burma, the Lyres, and Unnatural Axe). In 1980, the Neighborhoods struck a deal with the respected local independent label Ace of Hearts Records, and their debut single, "Prettiest Girl" b/w "No Place Like Home," became a massive local hit, selling over ten thousand copies, a remarkable achievement for a small-label "new wave" single at the time. The Neighborhoods became a potent draw in New England and several important East Coast markets, but in 1981 the band lost valuable momentum when they split for a spell. By 1984, Minehan formed a new Neighborhoods lineup with Quaglia on drums and Lee Harrington on bass, and the group released a 12" EP, Fire Is Coming. In 1986, the Neighborhoods signed with Restless Records, and released their first full-length album, The High Hard One. A second album, Reptile Men, followed in 1987; it was released on Roadrunner Records' new wave imprint Emergo Records. In 1988, the group set out on tour opening for the Ramones, and in 1990 they released Hoodwinked, which was produced by Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford, a longtime fan of the group. A year later, the Neighborhoods were signed to the Atlantic-distributed Third Stone, and their self-titled effort for the label would be their first and only major-label release. Also produced by Whitford, the album debuted a new Neighborhoods lineup: Quaglia left the band, and Carl Coletti took over the drum kit, while a second guitarist, Dan Batel, briefly stepped in. The Atlantic-distributed album was a commercial disappointment, and in the fall of 1992, after a farewell show at The Rat, the Neighborhoods called it a day; Batel was already gone, and in addition to a performance by the Minehan/Harrington/Coletti lineup, Quaglia and Hartcorn sat in for a short set of early Neighborhoods favorites. By this point, Minehan had launched a successful second career as a recording engineer and producer, and he later opened his own studio, Woolly Mammoth Sound Studio, while continuing to perform as a solo act; he also sat in for Whitford on a 1994 Aerosmith tour when a family emergency forced Whitford to head home for a few days. Following the band's breakup, Harrington enrolled in law school and became a successful attorney. In the 21st century, Minehan re-formed the Neighborhoods with Harrington and drummer Johnny "Rock" Lynch, performing periodic shows in New England and the East Coast. The 1992 farewell show was belatedly released in 2011 as a two-CD set, The Last Rat.

LENOLA The Last Ten Feet of the Suicide Mile 1996

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Lenola began in 1994 as the four-track project of guitarist/vocalist Jay Laughlin, but evolved into a full-fledged band later that year with the addition of guitarist David Grubb and drummer Sean Byrne, whom Laughlin first met while the three were playing in various hardcore outfits in their native New Jersey. Following the addition of bassist Scott Colan, Lenola released a series of singles on their own Tappersize label before issuing their full-length debut The Last 10 Feet of the Suicide Mile, which spotlighted the group's guitar-drenched sound, in late 1996. Their second album, The Swerving Corpse, arrived in late 1997; the following year, Lenola gathered songs they had recorded inbetween albums onto two EPs, The Resurrection of the Close-Up on the Magic Spot on Fuzzy Box and The Day the Laughter Smelled on Blackbeanandplacenta. My Invisible Name followed in 1999, but also marked the Lenola's last for Tappersize. The new millennium saw the release of Treat Me to Some Life in spring 2001.

Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Scottish rural folk combo Appendix Out was formed in mid-1994 by singer/guitarist Ali Roberts and bassist/violinist Dave E. While at a Palace Brothers concert the following year, Roberts passed Will Oldham an Appendix Out demo cassette, and in early 1996 Oldham issued the single "Ice Age" on his Palace label; weeks later the group -- now additionally including cellist Louise D. and drummer Eva Peck -- also contributed material to the Up Records 4x4 compilation. "Well-Lit Tonight," one half of a Creeping Bent label split single with the Leopards, briefly preceded the 1997 release of Appendix Out's superb debut album The Rye Bears a Poison; guitarist/percussionist Gareth Eggie and flutist/keyboardist Tom C. joined the loose-knit lineup for the 1999 follow-up Daylight Savings. Night Is Advancing. which featured a looser, more dynamic sound, was issued in 2001.

SHED SEVEN Dolphin 1994

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Brit-pop band Shed Seven officially formed in York, England in 1991, although frontman Rick Witter, guitarist Paul Banks, bassist Tom Gladwin, and drummer Alan Leach first began collaborating while still in their teens. Signing to Polydor in 1994, Shed Seven's debut single, "Mark"/"Casino Girl," garnered little attention, but their second effort, "Dolphin," reached the U.K. Top 30; following a third single, "Speakeasy," the group closed out the year with the release of their debut LP, Change Giver. Although widely dismissed as mere pretenders to the Brit-pop throne, subsequent Shed Seven singles including "Where Have You Been Lately?" and "Ocean Pie" continued to hit the charts, and although American success was not forthcoming, the quartet achieved megastardom in, of all places, Thailand. Heralded by the hit "Getting Better," 1996's Maximum High earned stronger reviews than its predecessor, and after spending much of the next two years on the road, Shed Seven returned in 1998 with Let It Ride; when the album was not a breakout success, Polydor dropped the band. For 2001's Truth Be Told, Banks left the band and their original guitarist Joe Johnson -- whom Banks had replaced in 1993 -- returned. Released on indie label Artful, the album failed to make a splash, and Shed Seven disbanded soon after. Their final album, the live effort Where Have You Been Tonight?, was released in 2003. In 2007, the band reunited, bringing Banks back into the fold alongside Johnson for a tour that produced the Live at the BBC set. Things then went quiet for another decade before Shed Seven burst back in late 2017 with the announcement of a new studio album, their first in 16 years. Produced by Youth, Instant Pleasures had a hard-rocking, bluesy sound. Its release coincided with the launch of the band's very own beer, and their biggest-ever U.K. tour.

GANGER Fore 1996

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny

The Scottish post-rock quartet Ganger formed in 1995, its original members -- bassists Stuart Henderson and Graham Gavin, drummer James Young and guitarist Lucy McKenzie -- coming together out of a shared affection for the classic Krautrock sound. Debuting with the EP Half Nelson, 20-minute impromptu jams like "Jellyneck" characterized the group's early approach, but as their music grew more disciplined and eclectic the line-up began to crumble, with McKenzie the first to exit to pursue a career in the visual arts. After Gavin quit in 1997, Henderson and Young recruited ex-Fukiyama bassist Natasha Noramly and guitarist Craig B., with the revitalized Ganger resurfacing in early 1998 with the EP With Tongues Twisting Words; the full-length Hammock Style followed later that year, but the band broke had broken up by 1999.
