PETER CASE Six-Pack of Love 1992

Artist Biography

by Mark Deming

One of the most well-respected singer/songwriters of his generation, Peter Case is an artist whose eclectic body of work embraces rock & roll, contemporary folk, blues, and a number of points in between. As a songwriter, Case has shown himself to be a master storyteller with a special understanding of underdogs and lost souls, and his direct, passionate style as a singer and guitarist has served him well in both electric and acoustic contexts. He first gained a reputation with the taut power pop bands the Nerves (One Way Ticket) and the Plimsouls (Everywhere at Once), but he moved from rock to a more acoustic-oriented sound with his 1986 solo debut Peter Case. 1993's Sings Like Hell was a straightforward set of blues and folk covers, 2000's Flying Saucer Blues ranks with his best sets of original songs, and 2017's On the Way Downtown: Recorded Live on FolkScene documents the intimate, fervent tone of his live shows.

PANSY DIVISION Undressed 1993

Artist Biography

by Will Grega

Fashioning themselves as the first openly gay rock band, San Francisco's Pansy Division formed in 1991 around the music of singer/guitarist Jon Ginoli and bassist Chris Freeman. Seeking a musical outlet that reflected their own subcultures and views of gay life, the bandmembers drew influences from '60s pop and '70s punk, producing a heavy, but infectious pop-punk sound and establishing themselves at the forefront of the emerging queercore movement. After signing with Lookout! Records in 1993, Pansy Division began a wildly prolific run, releasing a new album each year over the next six years. Beginning with Undressed, they followed up in 1994 with Deflowered and gained mainstream exposure that year supporting Green Day on their Dookie tour. They continued to tour and record throughout the mid-'90s, at first as a trio with a rotating cast of drummers, then later with more permanent recruits Luis Illades (drums) and Patrick Goodwin (lead guitar). In the fall of 1998, the band released Absurd Pop Song Romance -- their last release for Lookout! -- and adopted a more serious tone than their previous albums.

As Pansy Division entered the new millennium, they kept a slightly lower profile while preparing what would become 2003's Total Entertainment!, their first release for the Alternative Tentacles label. The album found a middle ground between the humor of their early records and the maturity of their previous LP. Goodwin left the band in the fall of 2004 and was replaced first by Bernard Yin, then by Joel Reader. Their new label issued the CD/DVD compilation The Essential Pansy Division in January 2006. After launching their first major tour in several years in 2007, they were the subject of director Michael Carmona's documentary film Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band, which debuted the following year. A new studio album, That's So Gay, arrived in 2009, followed a year later by a live collection and a set of rarities. Around this time, Ginoli also published a memoir of his time in the band. After a seven-year break from recording, Pansy Division returned in 2016 with Quite Contrary, their seventh studio release.

ZUZU'S PETALS When No One's Looking 1992

Discogs

From the Twin/Tone Records site:

Taking their name from the film "It's A Wonderful Life" perhaps the purest expression of Americana ever produced, Zuzu's Petals take all of that absurd hope and grind it into their very own version of the ideal. With a vocal style reminiscent of the Slits or the Breeders, guitars the crunch one minute and serenade the next, and unruly rhythms that threaten to go off on their own at any time, the Zuzu's find joy in creating indefinable pop that begs to be listened to, danced to, thought about, and cried over.

GRINSPOON Licker Bottle Cozy EP 1996

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Ed Nimmervoll

Australian punk/grunge/funk band Grinspoon hail from the North Coast of the State of New South Wales, an area noted for attracting an alternate lifestyle community to its rural seaside setting. Guitarist Pat Davern and bassist Joe Hansen met vocalist Phil Jamieson and drummer Kris Hopes in 1995 on jam night at the main hotel in Lismore, the major town in the area. They decided to form a band specifically to enter a national competition looking to unearth new music. The contest was the first of its kind being run by the government-funded national youth radio network, Triple J. They won the competition with "Sickfest," the first song the band had ever written. The name Grinspoon comes from pro- marijuana activist Dr. Lester Grinspoon.

On the back of their Triple J success Grinspoon began touring and recorded a self financed five track CD "Licker Bottle Cozy" in July 1996. They were then signed to MCA 's Australian subsidiary Grunge, recording another EP before the September 97 release of the band's first album Guide To Better Living, named after a Sunbeam booklet of whitegoods from the 60's. They insisted on recording their album locally in Byron Bay rather than heading for a big city studio. The album reached #3, spent 26 weeks on the national charts, achieved double platinum status, and generating a number of hit singles. After extensively supporting the American release of Guide To Better Living with live performances, the band re-entered the studios in Sydney with expatriate American producer Jonathan Burnside (Nirvana, Melvins) to record the second album Easy, released in November 1999.

The group's style is variously described as Helmet meets Bush, or going from Helter Skelter type Beatles and Radio Birdman, to Fugazi and Ween.

ED HALL La La Land 1995

Discogs

Saw Ed Hall play in my city back in the '90s. During their set, they asked the audience who in the band was named Ed Hall. I yelled back, "No one!" They proceeded to toss me their Deth 7 inch.

The band is composed of Gary Chester, guitarist, Larry Strub, bassist, and Kevin Whitley, drummer in the first three albums. Their style is a mix of post hardcore, psychedelic rock and hardcore, a sound sometimes similar to Butthole Surfers. Maybe for this reason from 1991 to 1995 they record their lps on Trance Syndicate Records, independent record label founded in 1990 by King Coffey, drummer of Butthole Surfers. The band split in 1996.

Artist Biography

by Andy Kellman

The big-mouthed/well-coifed frontman of Liverpool's Echo & the Bunnymen, Ian McCulloch got his start with Pete Wylie and Julian Cope as the Crucial Three. This band lasted just over a month; Wylie and Cope bounced around in a couple of bands, with Wylie eventually starting Wah! and Cope forming the Teardrop Explodes. McCulloch formed Echo & the Bunnymen with Will Sergeant in 1978, who went on to become one of England's most successful and important pop bands throughout the '80s. McCulloch left the band in late 1988 to pursue a solo career. 1989's atmospheric Candleland stood up to his band's best work and was quite successful in the U.K., reaching the Top 20. 1992's Mysterio wasn't as strong, failing to do as well on the charts. During the tail-end of the '80s and the early '90s, McCulloch shut himself out from the rest of the world, staying in his Liverpool house and helping raise his two daughters. The combination of a frenzied lifestyle and the death of his father were enough to make him take a few steps back and virtually disappear from the public eye for several years. Around 1994, McCulloch patched up his friendship with Sergeant. Under the name Electrafixion, the duo added a rhythm section and released 1995's Burned, which scored the band a couple of minor hits on alternative radio in the U.S. Echo bassist Les Pattinson entered the picture, and the trio decided to record again as Echo & the Bunnymen. 1997's Evergreen, 1999's What Are You Going to Do with Your Life, and 2001's Flowers were each received positively in the press, if not quite living up to the high standard of the group's original incarnation. 2001 proved to be a busy year for McCulloch, who toured with the Bunnymen and inked a solo deal with U.K. indie Jeepster. Rhino also issued a four-CD box set of Echo & the Bunnymen material, entitled Crystal Days. Nearly 11 years after his last solo effort, McCulloch returned with Slideling in spring 2003. The album was released on Echo & the Bunnymen's stateside label spinART and featured collaborations with Coldplay's Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland, and actor John Simm (24 Hour Party People). In 2013, McCulloch delivered the fan-funded studio album, Pro Patria Mori, and the concert album, Live at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Both albums were also released as a double-package titled, Holy Ghosts.
