Artist Biography by John Bush

Vocalist Paul Dakota and bassist Greg McConnell formed Lost Dakotas in 1989 in Toronto, playing on the streets and at subway stations. Guitarist Adam Faux (later replaced by Rick O'Brien) and drummer Ron Duffy joined later and the group released the cassette Love to Play in 1990. Last Train to Kipling, an independent album, appeared the following year, and Sun Machine was issued in 1994.

For Squirrels formed in Gainesville, FL, in early 1993. The original lineup of Jack Vigliatura IV on vocals, guitarist Travis Tooke, drummer Jay Russell and bassist Bill White played around the area, and released Baypath Rd. in early 1994. After tours of the East Coast and the release of the EP Plymouth, For Squirrels signed with Sony/550 Music. The group then replaced Russell with Jack Greigo and in mid-1995 recorded their major-label debut, Example.
On September 8, however, the band's van blew a tire and overturned on the way back to Florida from a gig at CBGB's in New York. Vigliatura, White, and manager Tim Bender were killed, while Tooke and Greigo also suffered injuries. Example, released less than a month later, received overwhelming support from college radio. Tooke and Greigo were encouraged and decided to continue the band with high-school friend Andy Lord on bass.

Spacemen 3 were psychedelic in the loosest sense of the word; their guitar explorations were colorfully mind-altering, but not in the sense of the acid rock of the '60s. Instead, the band developed its own minimalistic psychedelia, relying on heavily distorted guitars to clash and produce their own harmonic overtones; frequently, they would lead up to walls of distortion with overamplified acoustic guitars and synths. Often the band would jam on one chord or play a series of songs, all in the same tempo and key. Though this approach was challenging, often bordering on the avant-garde, Spacemen 3 nevertheless gained a dedicated cult following. After releasing several albums in the late '80s, the band fell apart after in 1991.

In 1982, Sonic Boom (guitar, organ, vocals; born Pete Kember on November 19, 1965) and Jason Pierce (guitar, organ, vocals; also born November 19, 1965) formed Spacemen 3 in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. Sonic Boom and Pierce added a rhythm section comprised of Pete Baines and Rosco, and spent the next four years rehearsing and jamming. In 1986, the group released its debut album, Sound of Confusion, on Glass Records. At first the band sounded a bit like a punked-up garage rock band, but their music quickly evolved into their signature trance-like neo-psychedelia. Spacemen 3's second album, 1987's The Perfect Prescription, was the first to capture the group's distinctive style.

Following 1989's Playing With Fire, Baines and Rosco left the group to form their own band, the Darkside. They were replaced by Will Carruthers and Jon Mattock. Despite the addition of new blood to its lineup, the band was beginning to fray because of in-fighting between Sonic Boom and Pierce, as well as the former's increasing drug dependency. The new lineup struggled through a final album, 1991's Recurring, which featured Boom's songs on side one and Pierce's on side two. By the time of the release of Recurring, Pierce was performing with Carruthers and Mattock in a new band called Spiritualized. Shortly after the release of Recurring, Spacemen 3 split, and Spiritualized became Pierce's full-time band, eventually earning a cult following of its own.

Pet's eponymous debut album falls halfway between hard-edged commercial alternative rock and the introspective ramblings of Tori Amos, which isn't surprising since they are one of the first group's to sign to Amos' record label, Igloo, and the album was recorded at her home studio. The most notable thing about Pet is lead vocalist Lisa Papineau, who invests the songs with more grit and fury than they actually deserve. Usually the songs follow rather conventional melodic patterns, without ever offering any new spins or sense of craft to the formula. Still, Papineau's passion suggests that she could help make the band into something special somewhere down the road.

Formed in 1984 by high-school friends Sammy Llanas and Kurt Neumann, the BoDeans mixed Midwestern roots rock with elements of adult contemporary pop, fashioning a sound that earned critical acclaim during the '80s and commercial recognition during the following decade. Llanas and Neumann fronted the group by sharing vocal and guitar duties, while bassist Bob Griffin and drummer Guy Hoffman populated the rhythm section. Although based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, the BoDeans began building an audience 20 miles east in Milwaukee, and their success in that town helped gain them a contract with Slash Records, with manufacturing and distribution handled by Warner Bros.

The BoDeans worked with T-Bone Burnett on their debut album, Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams, which appeared in 1986 to warm reviews. They recruited another big-name producer, Talking Head Jerry Harrison, to helm 1987's Outside Looking In, which found the band reduced to a trio after the departure of Hoffman. Outside Looking In broke into the Billboard Top 100, and the BoDeans grew their audience by touring alongside U2, appearing on Robbie Robertson's self-titled solo album, and receiving the honor of Best New Band by Rolling Stone magazine. By the time they released their third album, Home, in 1989, keyboardist Michael Ramos and drummer Danny Gayol had joined. This lineup stayed intact for the release of 1991's Black and White, but the BoDeans went without a drummer once again on their next recording, Go Slow Down.

Following the release of a double-disc live album, Joe Dirt Car, the band returned in 1996 with Blend. Around the time of Blend's release, "Closer to Free" -- a song that had originally appeared on 1993's Go Slow Down -- became a hit, due in large part to its exposure as the theme song for the TV show Party of Five. "Closer to Free" eventually cracked the Top 20, becoming the most successful single of the band's career. The BoDeans were arguably more popular than ever, but the band took a break during the late '90s, with both frontmen devoting time to their solo careers.

By 2004, the band had reconvened and signed with a new label, Zoe. Resolution was released that year, followed in 2005 by Homebrewed: Live from the Pabst. Griffin left the group in 2006 and was replaced by Eric Holden, who appeared on 2008's Still. By this point, the bandmates had found a new home on 429 Records, and they remained with that label for the release of Mr. Sad Clown in 2010 and Indigo Dreams in 2011. That same year saw the departure of Llanas, citing "differences of opinion." The band's 11th studio album, American Made, arrived the following year on the band's own Free & Alive label, and was the first with Neumann as sole leader. The BoDeans toured extensively in support of the release, and in 2014 began work on their next studio project. Released in 2015, I Cant Stop featured a new BoDeans lineup anchored by Neumann, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Sam Hawksley, bassist Eric Holden, and drummer Kenny Aronoff, the latter a well-respected journeyman musician who had played on several BoDeans recording sessions in the '90s. In June 2016, the BoDeans brought out a single, "My Hometown," with the release benefiting the Milwaukee County Historical Society. The single was a preview of the group's next album; titled Thirteen, the 11-song set was released in April 2017.

Belgian/American industrial band, considered a bit more accessible than most bands in the genre. Members include the Revolting Cocks' Luc Van Acker and King Butcher's John Butcher. The lyrics, as can be inferred from the group's name, are largely political, with a military bent. While there are the pounding beats and distorted, repeated vocals typical of industrial music, the band experiments with verse-chorus song structures on some tracks.

A duo of singer/songwriter Julian Henry, who plays guitar, and producer Raymond Watts, who plays keyboards and handles the programming, London's Hit Parade were perched on the divide between indie acoustic guitar jangle and dancefloor-friendly electronics for most of their career. Even more than St. Etienne, the Hit Parade make plain the connections between two styles often seen as widely disparate.
Henry and Watts got together in the early '80s and began making bedroom recordings which they issued on their own JSH Records beginning with 1984's "Forever." A string of singles followed over the next two years, including "My Favourite Girl," "The Sun Shines in Cerrards Cross," "You Didn't Love Me Then," "See You in Havana," and "I Get So Sentimental." After a years-long silence, most of these singles were collected on 1990's With Love From the Hit Parade on the U.K. indie Vinyl Japan. The same label released the holiday single "Christmas Tears" later that year, which was included in two versions (one with Amelia Fletcher of Talulah Gosh and Heavenly singing lead) on the 1991 album More Pop Songs, which put Watts' keyboards more prominently into the mix. (A slightly reworked version of this disc, with tracks from the early singles, was released in Japan in 1992 as Light Music.)
Possibly through their relationship with Fletcher, the Hit Parade hooked up with the estimable Sarah Records, which released their next single, "In Gunnersbury Park," in January 1992. By this time, however, the Hit Parade had again slowed down their output, and with the exception of the 1993 single "Hitomi" on Chicago's Minty Fresh label, the duo weren't heard from again until 1994, when Sarah released the EP Autobiography, followed quickly by the full album The Sound of the Hit Parade, with which it shares no tracks. Henry quietly disbanded the Hit Parade after the release of that album.
