Mitch from Rumah Sakit, put a compilation together of San Francisco
bands. Originally, Musica de la Free School was either Mitch’s or, more
likely, Chad’s (from Tin Mak & The Ants) term used to reference SF
bands who liked playing together (Dilute, Tin Mak, Tsui, Uberhund, and a
few others). The comp is named that since those were bands in that
‘scene’.
Later, some of the bands moved away, dissolved, or changed members.
Kenseth, from Tarentel, and Mitch started working together and formed
Rumah Sakit. ‘Musica’, the term, just kind of died with all the changes.
So, ‘Musica de la Free School’ was an early term for the bands in SF
that had similar musical tastes and ideas. Later, Mitch called the
dilute/Sakit improv group, the session, the song, and his SF comp that
name. (refering to the song "Night Ascends And Descends The Confines Of
The City" in which Musica de la free school is noted to be the artist
for, in the sickroom records sampler)
