WONDERBOY Abbey Road To Ruin 1994

Discogs

Wonderboy Biography by Greg Prato

The '90s power pop outfit Wonderboy consisted of members Robbie Rist (singer, guitar, keyboard), Pat McGrath (guitars, keyboards, vocals), Dave Brow (bass, vocals), and Paul "Wally" Presson (drums, percussion, vocals). Rist got his start with the band Paul Pope, who issued a pair of albums and toured, but eventually lost most of its members. Rist decided to carry on, enlisting a few other fellow Los Angeles musicians and changing the band's name. The quartet issued three releases for the Racer label during the mid- to late '90s: 1996's Abbey Road to Ruin, a self-titled release, plus 1997's Napoleon Blown Apart.

SCRATCHING POST Flamethrower 1996

Discogs

Scratching Post Biography by Roxanne Blanford

Formed during the summer of 1992 in London, Ontario, Scratching Post encountered numerous member changes along the way before solidifying their 1998 personnel of vocalist/guitarist Nicole Hughes, guitarist Mark Holman, drummer Jeff Depew, and Phil Zeller on bass. In 1995, they released their first recording, a self-titled EP that printed only 500 units. When they signed with indie-label Squirtgun Records in 1996, the band released Flamethrower, which was reissued in early 1999 due to popular demand. Scratching Post's energetic power rock achieved loads of airplay on Canadian college radio and their mix of catchy pop and aggressive metal attracted a loyal following. Frontwoman Nicole Hughes, whose high-pitched girly voice belies an in-your-face hard rock attitude, has brought about comparisons to Chrissie Hynde, Juliana Hatfield, and Liz Phair, to name a few. But the driving rhythm of the entire band is what generates the most heat, which was fueled the 1999 release of Destruction of the Universe, recorded in Conshohocken, PA, produced by Rob Sanzo and mixed by illustrious producer Phil Nicolo.

Go-Kart Mozart Biography by Erik Hage

Go-Kart Mozart is a further installment in the decades-long musical journey of Lawrence, the one-named iconoclast responsible for some of the finest, most inscrutable pop music of his time. This project focuses on bubblegum sticky novelty pop whose earwormy melodies are balanced by the gritty, sardonic, sometimes moving topics of the songs. It's all a far cry from the post-punk aesthetic of Felt or the glam rock of Denim, but it's another perfect showcase for the wit and wisdom of one of pop's great eccentrics.

Lawrence spent the '70s and '80s fronting the atmospheric guitar pop band Felt, who drew much inspiration from Television, and then after a short break to recalibrate, returned to the pop music fray with the group Denim. Over the course of two albums (1992's Back in Denim and 1996's Denim on Ice) Lawrence and friends produced a bubblegummy strain of '70s glam rock whose sing-along hooks belied the oft-biting tenor of its lyrics. Near the end of that endeavor, the group shifted to making music inspired by novelty acts of the '70s like Lieutenant Pigeon and Chicory Tip as the title of the 1997 odds and sods collection Novelty Rock makes clear. After some all-too-typical wrangling with record labels led to the disbanding of Denim, Lawrence chose to further explore novelty pop with Go-Kart Mozart. Featuring a sound that was tinny and giddily cheap sounding as it mixed silly synth pop, crunchy glam, and sly socal commentary, the project's first album Instant Wigwam and Igloo Mixture was issued in 2000 on Lawrence's own label West Midlands Records (which existed under the Cherry Red umbrella.) After a five-year wait during which Lawrence oversaw the re-release of the entire Felt catalog and began work on various projects, Go-Kart Mozart's second album, Tearing Up the Album Chart, finally saw release. The album was again split between novelty and commentary and, as a bonus for fans of Denim, contained tracks from the group's long-shelved third album titled Denim Takes Over. After another long wait for more recordings, during which Lawrence was filmed for a documentary on his life and career that detailed his struggles and his genius (Lawrence of Belgravia, directed by Paul Kelly), Go-Kart Mozart reappeared in 2012 with a single (a cover of Roger Whittaker's hit "New World in the Morning") and an album (On the Hot Dog Streets,) which was co-produced by longtime Lawrence ally Brian O'Shaughnessy. The record was the most focused work they'd done to date and featured quite a few songs repurposed from the unreleased Denim album Denim Takes Over. Soon after it came out, Lawrence and his musical partner Terry Miles, whose collaboration dated back to Denim's 1996 record Denim on Ice, began work on a new record. It took longer than they expected, eventually seeing the light of day in early 2018. Titled Mozart's Mini Mart, the album added some music hall and electro pop to their usual junkshop glam-meets-novelty pop sound. It also featured heavy contributions from bassist Rusty Stone and production by Papernut Cambridge head honcho Ian Button. Following this release, Lawrence changed the name of the band to Mozart Estate and after another long wait, released the single "Record Store Day" in 2021 and "Relative Poverty" in 2022, then in 2023 unleashed Pop-Up! Ker-Ching! and the Possibilities of Modern Shopping, another hilariously cutting, completely original, mix of novelty, melody, and commentary.

LIT Five Smokin' Tracks From... EP 1996

by request

Discogs

Someone is channeling Nirvana. - Blogatrix

A major player throughout the post-grunge boom, Lit featured the combined talents of frontman A. Jay Popoff, his guitar-playing brother Jeremy, bassist Kevin Baldes, and drummer Allen Shellenberger. The group formed in 1990 in Orange County, California, where it initially performed metal-influenced music under the name Razzle. After changing their name, Lit began embracing a spunky brand of punk-pop that helped attract a local following in California. The group sold out local venues (including Club 369 in Fullerton) and issued two recordings: an EP, Five Smokin' Tracks from Lit; and the full-length Tripping the Light Fantastic, which arrived during the spring of 1997 and became a college radio hit.

Lit then landed a contract with RCA Records, which released the follow-up effort A Place in the Sun two years later. This proved to be Lit's breakthrough record, as the catchy rock riffs of "My Own Worst Enemy," "Zip-Lock," and "Miserable" all paved the way for platinum sales. With "My Own Worst Enemy" topping the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart, Lit toured the country alongside groups like the Offspring, No Doubt, and Garbage. Furthermore, they performed a set at Woodstock 1999 and earned a spot on the 2000 Vans Warped Tour.

A third album, Atomic, was released in fall 2001, spawning several singles including "Lipstick and Bruises." A self-titled album arrived in 2004, marking Lit's fourth full-length effort (as well as their first release on the Nitrus label). In 2008, drummer Shellenberger was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He died on August 13, 2009 at the age of 39. Nathan Walker was added as the band's drummer and Lit began work on new material. In 2012, Lit released their fifth studio album, the Butch Walker-produced The View from the Bottom. They dedicated the album to Shellenberger. The band's sixth album, These Are the Days, appeared at the end of 2017, showcasing a rootsier, countrified sound.
