Sone Review by Nitsuh Abebe
Someone, somewhere, once described Sone's sound as "classic rock vs. Pavement, " which is a marginally apt reference -- what's important, however, is that this battle is won by all of the right elements of each. In the same way that Yatsura filters Pavement's sloppy early tendencies through Scottish rock conventions, Sone filters them through drawling Americana and standard rock structures, and winds up with something rather impressive -- there's a sense of utter looseness to Sone, with pure pop lying just beneath it and peeking from between its seams. The album is an excellent collection of songs, and should be greeted with particular enthusiasm by fans of Sportsguitar, the Silver Jews, or Grandaddy.
