AllMusic Review by

Since the fusion of a power trio with enthusiastic, positive and energetic rock dreams the eternal existence of kinetic power pop was insured. With so simple of a formula and a lack of daring songwriting or impressive chops, is it possible to pull a good slab out of this soup? Certainly, it is all about arrangement. If every band member plays all the time, there is no arrangement and the recording is fit to be discarded. In other situations, there is hope. Zoinks has a lot of hope and as much heart. A perky, warm bassline trades with a strident, distorted guitar. The drums initiate the changes in temp and keep the pace at a lively clip. The vocals are bright and vigorous. Often, a few members of this mix bow out and let the rest take the spotlight. That keeps things interesting and before you know it, the CD is over and the smile remains.

18 WHEELER Formanka 1995

Artist Biography by

Scotland's 18 Wheeler was an overlooked and often critically bashed alternative pop/rock band. Formed by Sean Jackson (vocals, guitar), David Keenan (guitar, vocals), Alan Hake (bass), and Neil Halliday (drums) in the early '90s, 18 Wheeler shared their compatriots Teenage Fanclub's affection for Big Star's immaculate guitar pop, as well as the country-rock of Gram Parsons and the golden harmonies of the Beach Boys. However, 18 Wheeler's influences were obvious and the U.K. press dismissed them as pale imitators. In 1994, Keenan split from 18 Wheeler after recording a handful of singles and started his own group, the Telstar Ponies; he was replaced by guitarist Steven Haddow. 18 Wheeler also released their first album, Twin Action, on Creation Records that year. Twin Action was followed by Formanka a year later. Creation dropped the band after 1997's Year Zero, which found the group experimenting with dance rhythms to modernize their sound.

VOLCANO SUNS Career In Rock 1991

Discogs

Artist Biography by

The Bright Orange Years
Rising out of the ashes of the disbanded Mission of Burma, drummer Peter Prescott put together the Volcano Suns with bassist Jeff Weigand and guitarist Jon Williams to continue making rock music, but to do it in a lighter, less serious way than Prescott's former band. 1985 saw the band's debut, The Bright Orange Years, released on Homestead. Their second and third releases -- also on Homestead -- saw a development in the band when Weigand and Williams left after album number two, All Night Lotus Party. 1987's Bumper Crop, the Volcano Suns' third, was well received enough to get the band signed to SST for their next two albums: Farced (1988) and Thing of Beauty (1989). Considered the best lineup of them all, this incarnation (featuring the guest guitar work of David Kleiler) would be the band's last. 1991's Career in Rock (released on Quarterstick/Touch and Go) would prove to be the band's final release. In late 2005, Prescott re-formed the Volcano Suns and played reunion shows in Hoboken and Boston.
