THE FEELINGS Dearling Darling 1997

by request

Review

by Dean Carlson

Mildly appropriating the lo-fi turmoil of emo culture, the Feelings took things in a slightly different direction for their follow-up, Dearling Darling. Rather than letting themselves brood inside bad vocals and co-dependent guitar-plucking, the band added Hammond organs, swirling electronics, and an early-'80s post-punk chug to the standard indie rock clichés. "Hemophelia" and "Banana Fandango" are formless and difficult, but "Gone" is quite good, like the Velvet Underground's "The Gift" happily reworked by the Rentals.
