Deep Blue Something Biography

by William Ruhlmann

Deep Blue Something was formed by four students at the University of North Texas in Denton, northwest of Dallas: Todd Pipes (vocals/bass), his brother Toby (guitar/ vocals), Kirk Tatom (guitar), and John Kirtland (drums). After graduating, they played around the Southwest, and recorded a disc titled 11th Song, which they sold at shows in 1993. Their next recording, Home, appeared on the local RainMaker label in October 1994, and represented a significant upgrade in production value. On its strength, Deep Blue Something was signed by Interscope, which released a modified version of the album in June 1995, followed by the single "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Though the group considered themselves an alternative band with gothic elements, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" took off as a pop single, reaching the Top Five by the end of 1995. Others found them alternative enough to be objectionable, however: Todd Pipes was fired from his job as an English teacher at a private Christian school when the song began to get local radio play and parents complained that their children were being taught by a rock & roller. Though Home achieved gold-record status, Deep Blue Something's sophomore release was a long time coming: the band parted ways with Interscope and went on creative hiatus for several years. They eventually signed with the Aezra label (a subsidiary of EMI) for their second proper album; titled simply Deep Blue Something, the record was finally released in mid-2001. Shortly after the album's release, Deep Blue Something broke up.

For Love Not Lisa Biography by John Bush

For Love Not Lisa formed in Oklahoma City in the early '90s, when vocalist Mike Lewis and guitarist Miles began jamming together. The duo later picked up bassist Clint McBay and drummer Aaron Preston, and moved to Los Angeles to find fame and fortune. After a 1992 self-titled EP -- inspired equally by heavy metal and punk -- was praised in Option, they indeed hit the big time, signing with Elektra/EastWest. Debut album Merge was released in 1993, and the group toured with Fugazi, Green Day, and Rage Against the Machine. A contribution for the soundtrack to 1994's The Crow increased their recognition, and second album Information Superdriveway appeared in mid-1995. Lost Elephant followed four years later.

Olivelawn Biography

by Erik Hage

San Diego's Olivelawn gloried in brutal, sludgy SoCal punk, releasing two full-length albums in the early '90s before the members parted ways. The group's muscular sound was powered by singer Mike Olson's fierce delivery, the guitars of O (a.k.a. Otis Barthoulameu) and the rhythm section of drummer Eddie Glass and bassist Jonny Donhowe. The short-lived unit released their debut, Sap, on Nemesis Records in 1991, following that with the Headhunter release Sophomore Jinx in 1992. The latter was produced by Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden). The group's sound displayed a clear debt to such predecessors as the Stooges, Black Sabbath, and the MC5. In retrospect, Olivelawn is important primarily because of O's membership. He would go on to form Fluf, a more successful punk combo that benefited from O's songwriting chops and heavy guitar sound. O was a pervasive presence on the '90s San Diego scene. Besides his membership in Olivelawn and Fluf, he also produced records, served as roadie for the Muffs, and was a published skateboard photographer, among other things.
