MAIDS OF GRAVITY

Maids of Gravity
1995

The First Second
1996

Artist Biography by

Maids of Gravity briefly floated into the public consciousness with the hallucinogenic "Only Dreaming" in 1995, a track from their self-titled debut album. Maids of Gravity formed in the early '90s by Ed Ruscha (vocals, guitar) after he left Medicine. Named after a group Ruscha saw in a dream, the L.A.-based Maids of Gravity recorded their first full-length in 1994 for Vernon Yard Records. Also featuring guitarist Jim Putnam (also formerly of Medicine) and drummer Irwin, Maids of Gravity's neo-psychedelic sound countered the grunge trend of the early '90s, but "Only Dreaming" was the only song that was able to penetrate the heap of Nirvana and Pearl Jam clones. Nevertheless, it was enough to get Maids of Gravity invited to radio-station festivals and opening slots for Bush and Matthew Sweet. In 1996, the band hired Velvet Underground legend John Cale to produce their next album, The First Second. On The First Second, Maids of Gravity ventured further into acid rock, weaving otherworldly lyrics with drugged-out guitar jams. Eugene Gorester (guitar) and Mark Kay (bass) were added to the group. Maids of Gravity released Strange Channel in 2000.

 biography

[+] by Steve Huey
The brainchild of guitarist Brad Laner, Los Angeles trio Medicine play a melodic, rhythmic style of noise-rock that has been tagged "dream-pop." Laner began performing in his early teens in such local bands as Vox Pop and Nervous Gender after developing a taste for such avant-garde rock performers as Captain Beefheart, Throbbing Gristle, Yoko Ono, and the Residents. Over the years, Laner played on more than 300 albums, the most famous of which belonged to industrial-rock outfit Savage Republic, for whom he served as the drummer. Medicine was formed in 1991 with drummer Jim Goodall; its early lineup included guitarist Jim Putnam, bassist Eddie Ruscha, and singer Annette Zalinskas, an original member of the Bangles. Putnam, Ruscha, and Zalinskas eventually left; the latter was replaced by former Fourwaycross singer Beth Thompson. The band's debut, Shot Forth Self Living, was released in the U.K. several months after the band formed; it was picked up in America by Rick Rubin's American label, which signed Medicine in 1992. 1993 saw an EP, 5ive, which was followed a year later by the band's second full-length album, The Buried Life, featuring more collaborations within the group.

MEDICINE The Mechanical Forces of Love 2003

Someone requested more Medicine and I found this CD in my stack. I'm not sure what Medicine was thinking when they recorded this record. Normally as you know I do not post anything past 2001 but as this was a request and I think it's important to check out this late release from the brilliant band Medicine, even if they were smoking catnip when they made this record.

LUSK Free Mars 1997

Lusk Biography by Steve Bekkala

After departing from Tool in late 1995, bassist Paul D'Amour joined forces with Replicants keyboardist Chris Pitman to form the neo-psychedelic project, Lusk. Accompanied by Failure's Greg Edwards and Medicine's Brad Laner, the collaborators soon journeyed into a Los Angeles rehearsal studio to write and record their 1997 debut album, Free Mars. While not a huge hit, the album managed to attract enough attention to garner a 1998 Grammy nomination for Best Recording Package. Around this same time, Lusk became entangled in legal red tape with their label, prompting the various members to pursue their interests with other projects. Notably, Pitman began a lengthy involvement with Guns N' Roses, and by the turn of the millennium, Lusk's future was beginning to look increasingly uncertain.
