THE DARKSIDE All That Noise 1990

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny
One of the many projects to emerge from the groundbreaking efforts of drone-rock avatars Spacemen 3, the Darkside was led by Pete Bain (a.k.a. Pete Bassman), who had left the Spacemen prior to their 1989 LP Playing with Fire. Upon returning to his hometown of Rugby, England, Bain encountered vocalist Nick Hayden, who asked him to join the Darkside; soon the revitalized group was performing locally and cutting demos, but after signing a record deal their drummer exited, to be replaced another Spacemen 3 alum, Stewart "Rosco" Roswell, for their 1990 debut single "Highrise Love." Then, in the midst of a British tour, Hayden abruptly left the Darkside, forcing Bain to assume vocal duties; it was a line-up of Bain, Roswell and guitarist Kevin Cowan which recorded the group's 1990 LP All That Noise. Continuing their constant state of flux, Roswell announced he was rejecting the drums in favor of keyboards, heralding the arrival of new percussionist Craig Wagstaff for the 1991 limited-edition live LP Psychedelicise Suburbia. When Cowan quit after recording 1992's Melomania, Roswell took over guitar chores and the Darkside recorded another EP, Mayhem to Meditate; after demos for a third LP were cut but rejected by the label, the group finally disbanded.

THE MOLES Instinct 1994

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny

The Moles were an Australian chamber pop band led by Richard Davies, a gifted singer/songwriter who later found success on American soil both as a solo artist and as one-half of the short-lived duo Cardinal. Formed in Sydney in the late '80s, the Moles debuted in 1990 with the EP Untune the Sky, followed a year later by another EP, Tendrils & Paracetamol. After the 1992 release of their first full-length release -- also titled Untune the Sky -- the group relocated to New York, where they released a pair of 7" singles (packaged together as the Double Single EP). A move to London followed, and although they garnered great acclaim from the British press, the band nonetheless broke up around the beginning of 1993. In 1994, however, Davies resurrected the Moles aegis for the album Instinct; a band effort in name only, it essentially marked the beginning of Davies' solo career, although he did not make his formal bow until 1996's There's Never Been a Crowd Like This. In 2016, after releasing a flurry of albums under both his own name and with Cardinal and Cosmos, the latter a collaboration with Guided by Voices' Robert Pollard, Davies issued the sprawling, 24-track Tonight's Music, the first new Moles album in over 20 years.

Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Fronted by the insistent vocals of Dave Callahan with a tightly wound band backing him, the Wolfhounds were the dark horse of the legendary C86 cassette. They split the difference between the avant noise and sweet jangle pop factions, while staking out their own idiosyncratic territory. They didn't last very long; after releasing one classic single, a near-brilliant album with 1987's Unseen Ripples from a Pebble, and a couple more fine examples of noise pop, the group burned out in 1990. Most of the members kept their feet in music (Callahan most notably with Moonshake), so it made sense when they re-formed in 2005. Intermittent incendiary live shows followed, as did a couple bracing albums like 2016's Untied Kingdom (...Or How to Come to Terms with Your Culture).

The band was formed in Essex, England by singer Callahan, guitarists Paul Clark and Andy Golding, bassist Andy Bolton, and drummer Frank Stebbing. Evolving from the ashes of the local garage band the Changelings, the group debuted in the spring of 1986 with the Cut the Cake EP; despite the record's gritty, intense approach, it nevertheless landed the Wolfhounds a spot on the NME's C86 compilation cassette, a release that otherwise spotlighted a much sweeter jangle pop sound. Even as C-86 emerged as something of a genre unto itself, the Wolfhounds continued exploring a darker, more experimental direction on the follow-up single, "The Anti-Midas Touch," and the full-length Unseen Ripples from a Pebble in 1987. Guitarist Matthew Deighton and bassist David Oliver replaced Clark and Bolton prior to the 1988 single "Son of Nothing," with the subsequent LP Bright and Guilty remaining the band's creative peak; long-simmering internal tensions reached their boiling point during the sessions for 1990's blistering Attitude, however, and upon its completion the Wolfhounds disbanded. Callahan later resurfaced in the much-lauded Moonshake.

The group buried old resentments in 2005 and re-formed at the behest of Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley to appear at a concert honoring the 20th anniversary of the C86 cassette's release. Callahan and Andy Golding were joined by Peter Wilkins (drums) and Richard Golding (bass), and that group played live shows over the next few years before heading back to the studio to record new material. The first release was EP001, which comprised new recordings of songs the bandmembers wrote in their early days but never recorded. More singles followed; then Odd Box Records issued Middle Aged Freaks in 2014. That same year an expanded reissue of Unseen Ripples from a Pebble helped remind people just how good the band sounded in the '80s. Not to be outdone by nostalgia, the Wolfhounds released Untied Kingdom (...Or How to Come to Terms with Your Culture), an album that was just as ferocious and inspired as anything they had done previously. Another reminder of their fiercely melodic and often abrasive '80s sound came with the 2018 release of Hands in the Till: The Complete John Peel Sessions on Slumberland Records, a label that over the years featured many bands inspired by the Wolfhounds.

MONO MEN Stop Draggin' Me Down 1992

Artist Biography

by Matt Carlson

About two hours from Seattle, in the seaside town of Bellingham, WA, the Mono Men pursued their campy retreat to '60s rock revivalism via the Sonics, the Wailers, and loads of teen exploitation flicks, but don't be fooled -- their music is loud, fast, and aggressive.

The Mono Men doubled as indie label gurus, forming and running garage rock asylum Estrus Records; they also host the annual Garage Shock music festival in upstate Washington. Their lineup included Dave Crider on guitar and vocals, Ledge Morrisette on bass, Aaron Roeder on drums, and John Mortensen (ex-Game of Vultures), who replaced original guitarist Marx Wright after 1990's Stop Draggin' Me Down.
