Artist Biography by

The Brilliant Corners were one of many British jangle pop acts in the '80s that never managed to corral a mainstream audience. It wasn't for a lack of trying, either. The Brilliant Corners injected many of their early records with finger-snapping hooks, but they were mainly applauded by a cult of devotees. The Brilliant Corners were formed by David Woodward (vocals, guitars), Chris Calvin (bass), and Bob Morris (drums) in Bristol, England, in 1984. The group released their first album, Growing up Absurd, on SS20 Records in September 1985. In 1988, the Brilliant Corners released their most critically acclaimed LP, Somebody up There Likes Me, on McQueen Records. Despite hummable tunes such as "Brian Rix" and "Your Feet Never Touch the Ground," the Brilliant Corners were denied a commercial breakthrough. In 1990, the band veered from its buoyant mix of jangling guitars and trumpet for the album Hooked, instead directing its sound toward the shoegazer movement. The record disappointed many of the Brilliant Corners' fans with its creative shift. The group returned to their original formula on A History of White Trash in 1993; however, it was their last album as the Brilliant Corners called it quits. Woodward later joined Experimental Pop Band

Artist Biography

Previously known as Jo Jo And The Real People, the Real People were formed in 1989 by two brothers, Tony Griffiths (b. 7 April 1966, Liverpool, Merseyside, England; bass, vocals) and Chris Griffiths (b. 30 March 1968, Liverpool, Merseyside, England; guitar, vocals), and Sean Simpson (b. 9 October 1968, Liverpool, Merseyside, England; guitar) and Tony Elson (b. 2 January 1966, Liverpool, Merseyside, England; drums). The quartet started playing local pub gigs in the Bootle area of Merseyside and soon found themselves embroiled in a scene that included Rain, Top and the La’s. Unfortunately, the Real People’s natural instinct for muscular tunes and powerful melodies was undermined by the demands of the music industry. Although the quartet signed to CBS Records (soon to be Sony), at the end of 1989, and had enormous fun spending their advance on a trip to India, it was to be a whole year before any records were released. ‘Windowpane’ reached only number 60 in the UK and when the album charted for only one week (at number 59) the Real People complained about Sony’s lack of promotion. They returned to Liverpool and the unemployment register. In 1995, they formed their own record label, Egg Records, and, without Sean Simpson, recorded The Real People EP, which reached number 13 in the UK’s independent charts. Earlier, Chris Griffiths had met Liam Gallagher of the yet-to-be-discovered Oasis and invited the group to use the Real People’s eight-track studio to record their first demos. As a result, Chris co-wrote the song ‘Columbia’ with Liam, long before his band’s breakthrough. The connection helped rekindle interest in the Real People, who continued into 1995 with the release of ‘Bring You Down’ and in 1996 with What’s On The Outside.

Artist Biography by

British pop band Straw was formed by Bristol university mates Mattie Bennett (vocals/guitar) and Roger Power (bass); expanding to a trio with the addition of keyboardist Duck, the group -- originally dubbed Please -- quickly signed to Arista, only to be dropped by the label even before issuing their first single. Adding former Kings of Infinite Space drummer Andy Nixon and rechristening themselves Straw, the group landed at WEA and issued its debut single "Weird Superman" in the summer of 1998; three more singles -- "The Aeroplane Song," "Moving to California" and "Soundtrack of the Summer" -- followed in 1999 before Straw released its first full-length effort, Shoplifting; upon completion of the album, Power was dismissed from the lineup.

WARM JETS Future Signs 1997

Artist Biography by

The British acid-pop band the Warm Jets was formed in 1995 by singer/guitarist Louis Jones, guitarist Paul Noble and drummer Ed Grimshaw; with the addition of bassist Colleen Brown -- soon replaced by one Aki -- they set about recording a demo tape which made its way to the offices of the This Way Up label, who signed the group in early 1996. After the Warm Jets' debut EP Autopia appeared that same autumn, they returned to the studio with veteran producer Glyn Johns to begin work on 1998's full-length Future Signs, scoring a UK hit with the single "Hurricane."
