Artist Biography by

Hailing from Raleigh, NC, the Nickel Slots are led by former Lustre frontman Will Marley. While there is certainly a pop punch to the Nickel Slots' music, it is much more rootsy in feel than Marley's former group. The Nickel Slots emerged in 1998 soon after Lustre (who had contributed two cuts to the soundtrack to the teen movie Empire Records) broke up. Lustre had recently been dropped from A&M Records. Marley independently recorded four songs and gave them to Andy Martin, who ran Deep South Records. Martin liked the music enough to encourage Marley to put together a band for an upcoming Deep South concert. Marley enlisted drummer Chris Henderson, bassist David Collins, and lead guitarist Jesse Huebner. The group released its debut album, White Lies & Cigarettes, in 1999. The album showcased Marley's gruff vocals and bar-pop songcraft. Starving Artist Sale followed in May 2002 and was apparently the band's final offering.

Artist Biography by

Call It a Day

More artistically valid than most projects that enable a drummer to step into the spotlight, Brick Layer Cake demonstrated that there were two sides to Todd Trainer (Rifle Sport, Breaking Circus, Shellac). Forsaking his primary instrumental outlet, Trainer played guitar and sang while the likes of Rifle Sport mate Gerard Boissy and producer Brian Paulson joined in. Steve Albini occasionally leant his drumming skills during the unit's performances. Heavy, simple structures with an infrequent-yet-effective melodic hook and Trainer's gruff and clever vocals laid the foundation for Brick Layer Cake's output. The Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth EP was released through the Chicago-based Ruthless indie in 1990. Another EP, Call It a Day, was released the following year on Touch & Go. After another three years, the full-length Tragedy Tragedy was issued on the same label in 1994; the CD version added Call It a Day as a bonus. An eight year silence was broken in 2002, when Trainer returned with Brick Layer Cake in the form of Whatchamacallit. In the spirit of Stevie Wonder and Prince, Trainer played all the instruments. Albini engineered.

DADDY LONGHEAD Cheatos 1991

Discogs

Artist Biography by

Bassist Jeff Pinkus founded Daddy Longhead during his tenure with the Butthole Surfers as a way to voice the back catalog of songs that did not fit the bill with the Surfers. The band also served as an alternate musical voice stylistically, as well as an easygoing, stress-free environment within which to create and play music with friends. That's perhaps why Daddy Longhead always resembled a twisted, jam band reminiscent of an Allman Brothers on acid. Daddy Longhead was formed in Austin, TX, in 1990 with Jimbo Young on guitar, and Rey Washam -- an extraordinary musician who had previously worked with, among others, Big Boys, Scratch Acid, and later with Ministry -- on drums. The band began playing the occasional show in Austin or Houston when Pinkus' busy recording and touring schedule with the Butthole Surfers permitted. Issuing its debut album, Cheatos, in 1993, on the Butthole Sufers longtime home of Touch and Go Records, the band remained a side project until Pinkus quit the Butthole Surfers in late 1995.

Supermasonic

Developing into more of a full-time band at that point, Daddy Longhead released its sophomore effort, Supermasonic in 1997 on the band's imprint Honest Abe's Custom Records, with Troy Baldridge assuming drumming duties, save a few album tracks recorded with Washam. In the meantime, Pinkus was devoting more and more time to his new project, Honky, which then itself catapulted into more of a full-time effort than Longhead. However, the band continued to record and tour, this time with former Pain Teens drummer Frank Garymartin. By 1998, Daddy Longhead called it quits. That same year saw the Man's Ruin Records release of Classic, a collection of 1993 recordings made with the original lineup of Pinkus, Washam, and Young.

JACK The Jazz Age 1998

Artist Biography by

Anthony Reynolds formed Jack at the age of 19 with fellow Cardiff, Wales native Matthew Scott (guitar), the two drawing on a shared love of the bleak humour of Nick Cave and the drink-raddled prose of Charles Bukowski. By March 1995 the rest of the band was in place, with Richard Adderley (guitar), Patrick Pulzer (drums), Colin Williams (bass) and George Wright (keyboards) joining up in time for their debut London gig, after which they were immediately snapped up by Too Pure Records. Their first release, the limited edition ‘Kid Stardust’, was single of the week in Melody Maker; this was followed by Pioneer Soundtracks, the bohemian ambience of which was accentuated by the work of ex-Scott Walker producer Peter Walsh and the string arrangements of seventh member, cellist Audrey Morse. The album was released at a point when the cabaret noir sound of Cave (almost parodied in ‘I Didn’t Mean It, Marie’), Walker, Jacques Brel and the Tindersticks was flavour of the month. Reynolds, however, took their black-clad moodiness to a new extreme: ‘I don’t believe in happiness, ’ he declared, ‘do you?’ He expressed the darkness more fully in Jacques, described as Jack’s ‘older, slightly eccentric brother’, a spin-off collaboration with fellow Brel-obsessive Momus that resulted in 1997’s How To Make Love Volume 1. The parent band’s vision was fully realised on 1998’s The Jazz Age, a lush romantic masterpiece that reached a sublime peak on the epic ballad ‘Nico’s Children’.

Reynolds recorded two further albums with Jack/Jacques, To Stars (2000) and The End Of The Way It’s Always Been (2002), before disbanding both outfits to concentrate on solo work. He made his debut, under the Anthony moniker, with 2004’s Neu York. He has also published selections of his poetry.

TRONA self titled 1996

AllMusic Review by

Though they hail from Boston, Trona's soul seems to be in the west. The band is named after a little town deep in Death Valley, and seems most comfortable when it's mixing wiry, slightly claustrophobic, East Coast indie rock with the ringing chords and the melancholy of rock music made near the pull of the desert. "Red Hot Slag" opens up Trona, showcasing the co-ed vocals of Christian Dyas and Mary Ellen Leahy over a tensile two-chord riff; it's followed by "Web," which could be a Pixies take on sludgy country-rock. The album's midsection moves toward the bright sun; unsurprisingly, "Tucson" mixes jangle with a big lead electric that rings like an amplifier in the desert. "Branded" takes the Southwest feel even further with its bustling country beat and a lead vocal suggestive of Paula Frazer's work with Tarnation. Trona ends a bit surprisingly, with a rocked-up version of Stereolab's "Wow and Flutter" that sounds more like a Yo La Tengo cover than anything.
