Artist Biography by

Hailing from Raleigh, NC, the Nickel Slots are led by former Lustre frontman Will Marley. While there is certainly a pop punch to the Nickel Slots' music, it is much more rootsy in feel than Marley's former group. The Nickel Slots emerged in 1998 soon after Lustre (who had contributed two cuts to the soundtrack to the teen movie Empire Records) broke up. Lustre had recently been dropped from A&M Records. Marley independently recorded four songs and gave them to Andy Martin, who ran Deep South Records. Martin liked the music enough to encourage Marley to put together a band for an upcoming Deep South concert. Marley enlisted drummer Chris Henderson, bassist David Collins, and lead guitarist Jesse Huebner. The group released its debut album, White Lies & Cigarettes, in 1999. The album showcased Marley's gruff vocals and bar-pop songcraft. Starving Artist Sale followed in May 2002 and was apparently the band's final offering.
