Artist Biography by

Formed in 1993 by singer/guitarist Jennifer Olay, a onetime member of the love-rock band Some Velvet Sidewalk, the Seattle-based Violent Green debuted a year later with the single "You Make Me Wish I Had a Gun," the first release ever on the fledgling Up Records label. The full-length Eros soon followed, and in 1996 Violent Green issued their sophomore effort, From Cycles of Heat. Hangovers appeared in 1998.

SYMPOSIUM One Day at a Time 1997

by request

Artist Biography by

The London group Symposium arrived on the tail end of the Brit-pop explosion, landing in that no-man's between Blur vs. Oasis and Radiohead's OK Computer with a reputation as a blistering live act and a distinctly non-Anglo variety of cheeky punk-pop. Unfortunately, the group's debut album, On the Outside, failed to capitalize on the early promise of the single "The Answer to Why I Hate You" or their reputation (spurred by the cover of Melody Maker) as the Best Live Band in Britain. Symposium, which consists of Ross Cummins (vocals), Hagop Tchaparian (guitar), Joe Birch (drums), William McGonagle (guitar), and Wojtek Godzisz (bass), formed at school in Kensington, West London, in the mid-'90s.

Artist Biography by

Blue
Following his departure from All after the group's first two albums under that name, vocalist/guitarist Dave Smalley (also formerly of Dag Nasty) put together Down By Law in 1991 with ex-Clawhammer guitarist Chris Bagarozzi and the former Chemical People rhythm section of Ed Urlik (bass) and Dave Nazworthy (drums). This lineup remained together only for Down By Law's debut album, 1992's Blue; when the follow-up, 1994's Punkrockacademyfightsong, appeared, Smalley had reconstituted the band with guitarist Sam Williams III (ex-Balance and Slap of Reality), bassist "Angry" John DiMambro (ex-Clay Idols and Leonards), and drummer Hunter Oswald. This lineup remained stable, save for the drum chair, which was occupied by Danny Westman on 1996's All Scratched Up! and Chris Lagerborg on 1997's Last of the Sharpshooters. In 1999, the group issued their fifth album for Epitaph, Fly the Flag. Split followed a year later. When Windwardtidesandwaywardsails dropped in 2003, original drummer Nazworthy was back in the fold.

THE CROWNHATE RUIN Until The Eagle Grins 1996

Discogs

Artist Biography by

A member of Washington, D.C.'s Dischord roster, the Crownhate Ruin formed in 1994 and lasted only until the end of 1996, but not before they were able to record and release an album, 1996's Until the Eagle Grins. Frederick Erskine was the bassist and vocalist, Joseph McRedmond was the guitarist and vocalist, and Vin Novara was the drummer. Both McRedmond and Erskine had previously spent time in the short-lived Hoover, another band that recorded for Dischord. Like many of their label mates, the Crownhate Ruin played an explosive brand of post-hardcore indie rock that relied on slashing guitars and screamed vocals. Erskine moved on to June of 44, just before Hoover briefly reunited for a release on Slowdime.
