Luxuria Biography

by Andy Kellman

Luxuria was a duo consisting of former Buzzcocks and Magazine singer/songwriter Howard Devoto and Noko. Devoto began working with the Liverpool musician a few years after the release of his solo album, Jerky Versions of the Dream. The duo eventually released two albums on Beggars Banquet, which ranged from sparse acoustic accompaniment to involved dance beats. Unanswerable Lust was released in 1988 to lukewarm reception, followed two years later by the improved Beast Box. A number of singles were released off each record to little effect on the U.K. charts. Shortly after the duo split, a Japanese box set was issued, combining both CDs with a VHS containing videos for each song off of Beast Box.

Skatenigs Biography

by Bradley Torreano

The Skatenigs began their career as associates of Ministry and its stable of guest musicians during the late '80s. Singer Phil Owens appeared on the Revolting Cocks' Beers, Steers and Queers album, and managed to get the Skatenigs a spot on the Revolting Cocks/Mentors tour. After the drug-fueled decadence of that experience, the band recorded the Chemical Imbalance EP and shopped for a label. Megaforce Records came knocking, so the band signed on to release their debut, Stupid People Shouldn't Breed. Ministry mastermind Al Jourgensen produced the album, but refused to take credit for it, beginning a rift between himself and Owens. The music was a catchy mix of punk, metal, and industrial, but it never really caught on and soon they found themselves off of Megaforce. By 1994, tensions were quite high between Owens and Jourgensen, but the band managed to release What a Mangled Web We Leave on Red Force and toured behind it. The band remained rather inactive during the second half of the decade, reappearing in 2000 with a different lineup. Ministry wrote a song about all the bad blood between the group of musicians who used to gravitate around Jourgensen, and many believe that Owens was one of the song's major targets. Owens denied this claim, instead trying to focus any attention he received on the new Skatenigs album, which still has not arrived.

The High Llamas Biography

by Richie Unterberger

Although the High Llamas are nominally a group, they're pretty much the brainchild of singer and guitarist Sean O'Hagan. O'Hagan did some time in the London-by-way-of-Dublin band Microdisney, in which he was the songwriting partner of Cathal Coughlan. After Microdisney split in 1988 (Coughlan forming Fatima Mansions), O'Hagan released a couple of import-only solo albums before forming the High Llamas. The Llamas issued their debut, Gideon Gaye, in 1994 to high praise in the British press; it was released in the States a year later almost as an afterthought, with virtually no fanfare.

Comparisons of O'Hagan/the High Llamas to Brian Wilson/the Beach Boys are unavoidable, and not just from arcane critics. Anyone with a large Beach Boys collection will detect the uncanny resemblance to 1966-1970 Beach Boys, with the sophisticated melodies, the beautiful harmonies, and the elaborate production, with the emphasis on layered keyboards and orchestration. Echoes of Pet Sounds, SMiLE, Wild Honey, and Surf's Up predominate, though O'Hagan also claims Burt Bacharach as a major inspiration.

The Llamas began to build a bigger and bigger fan base throughout the late '90s (in the U.S. as well as the U.K.), and O'Hagan's ever-shifting, ever-growing stable of side musicians made sure every album was as beautifully arranged and carefully conceived as the last. Subsequent efforts include 1996's gorgeously sprawling Hawaii, 1997's warmly clinical Cold and Bouncy, and 1999's chilly Snowbug. Buzzle Bee arrived the following year, featuring a more stripped-down sound and guest vocals from Mary Hansen from Stereolab. Before her tragic death in late 2002, O'Hagan had Hansen onboard for the Llamas' chamber pop masterpiece Beet, Maize & Corn. Virtually eliminating the standard "electric guitar, bass, and drums" formula, Beet, Maize & Corn was full of lilting strings, warm horns, and gently plucked classical guitars, and proved to be a high achievement for the Llamas with both critics and fans.

Four years later, in 2007, O'Hagan and company revisited the sunny sprawl of Hawaii (as well as Cold and Bouncy's technical slickness) for the upbeat and lovingly crafted Can Cladders. For 2011's Talahomi Way, the band opted for a warmer, more overtly '60s-inspired sound. By the time of their next album, the band's membership included Pete Aves, Dominic Murcott, Marcus Holdaway, Jon Fell, and Rob Allum along with mainstay O'Hagan. Here Come the Rattling Trees began as a theater piece revolving around characters O'Hagan invented while bicycling around his Peckham neighborhood. The group performed it in pubs and theaters in 2014, then recorded the musical portions for Drag City to release in early 2016.

The Flim-Flams Review

by Mike DaRonco

The Flim-Flams were way ahead of their time. By the time their debut EP was released in 1995, no other band even thought of incorporating Moog keyboards and quirky new wave influences. But here are Chicago's Flim-Flams, bouncing their way through six songs of off the wall robotic pop that's complete with dual female vocals -- one of which being Mrs. Joey Vindictive -- and offbeat lyrics such as "Creamy twinkie little star/ Juju beans and chocolate bars/ Hookie meanie Pokie me/ Yippie yippie Daddyyo-yo." Very fun and very '80s. This album should come with leg warmers and a booklet on how to peg your pants.

THE GROWN-UPS Milk Carton 1997

Discogs

American punk / garage rock band from Santa Monica, California. Active from 1995 to 1999. These gals can scream. A lot.

Milk Carton Review

by Adam Bregman

A group of teenage girls from Santa Monica High School, the Grown-Ups had a short, brilliant career before quickly imploding. Far from your average teenage group, this gang was a spectacle live, with singer Paloma Parfrey usually in full-on spaz mode, along with a tiny little kid who would jump around the stage, who was also responsible for their rap number "Ode to the B-Dog," and a saxophonist, who could use a few more lessons. Five or six in all, the Grown-Ups were a band to reckon with and a knockout live act. It wasn't long before they caught the attention of Eric Erlandson of Hole and Bill Bartell, who produced their only record, Milk Carton. Unfortunately, this record isn't the best example of the band's skills, and even some of the members weren't crazy about the way it came out. It's a bit too raw, and Paloma Parfrey's screaming, which is endearing live, doesn't come off nearly as well on record. Her vocals often don't meld well with the music. It is the less juvenile-sounding songs which work best on the record, like "Discard Me" and "Scarz." Still, Milk Carton does give a taste of the chaos that was once the Grown-Ups.
