Big Box Schwing Review
by Jack Rabid
One has to wonder if Steve Albini ever sleeps. Or
eats. Or goes to the bathroom. Or has sex. Or pets his cat. Or does
anything other than place mics and roll tapes. Not only does he cheaply
and efficiently record more bands in a month in his Chicago studio than
any "big name" ever, but he also travels to document ornery groups as
well. In this case, he was off to the unlikely Mecca of Millbrook, AL,
to set down this Montgomery trio. Like a few of the bands Albini has
also played in, Udo Keel's guitars grind in a gnashing way. Likewise,
Keel often shouts like a man with a hotfoot, the bass percolates, and
the drums favor off-kilter beats and tom-tom bashings. Some of this is
pretty standard raunchy, angry post-punk, but the better, more fluid
passages in songs such as "Human Redundancies" hark back to the mid-'80s
Chicago sounds of Big Black, Breaking Circus, and Naked Raygun circa
"The Peacemaker."
