The Bigger the God Biography

by Alex Ogg

Oxford's The Bigger The God have laboured to make headway in the UK market after some encouraging early press. Thankfully the quartet of David Cowles-Hamar (vocals), Ellis James (guitar), Andy Smith (bass) and Steve Brownsill (drums) have persevered, despite operating increasingly at the margins of the record industry. The upside is that this has allowed them more creative freedom than those with record companies standing over them. After a quietly impressive start with Variety (1996) and attendant singles "Mum Steals Boyfriend" and "Miss Pritchard," the group moved on from their edgy, satirical pop to produce 1999's better realised though obtusely named . . . and the Ugly. They remain unlikely to win over the British 'inkies' at this stage in their career, particularly since they've abandoned most of their original pop elements. However, TBTG have managed to leave behind one of the best albums produced in Oxford in the 90s. And when you consider the competition - [Ride's] Nowhere, [Supergrass's] In It for the Money and [Radiohead's] The Bends and OK Computer, - that adds up to a weighty testimonial.

Teen Idols Biography

by Mike DaRonco

Hailing from a city more well known as the birthplace of rock & roll, Nashville's Teen Idols -- not to be confused with the early-'80s D.C. hardcore band -- had some serious angst against country music. Fed up with their redneck surroundings and "hee-haw" environment, Keith (vocals), Phillip (guitar/vocals), Heather (bass), and Matt (drums) got together with their Ramones records and leather jackets to form the Teen Idols as their own way of flipping the bird at the Grand Ole Opera. Combining '50s rock & roll attitude and snotty pop-punk got them some attention from Honest Don's Records, which would later on release their debut in 1997. Following some heavy touring and a nomination for Best Nashville Independent Artist in 1998, their sophomore album, Pucker Up, was released in 1999, followed by a split EP with Japan's Spread. Full Leather Jacket followed a year later. In 2003, the Idols released both The Dysfunctional Shadowman EP and the full-length Nothing to Prove (through Asian Man and Fueled by Ramen, respectively).

Krhissy plays catchy pop punk and hail from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
