DRILL TEAM Hope and Dream Explosion 1998

By request
Thanks for the upload, Kevin C.

Drill Team's first full-length album, Hope and Dream Explosion, shows some improvement over their debut EP, but perhaps not as much as one might like; too much of the album drifts past without leaving much of an impression. However, there are enough outbursts of melodicism, as on the opening track and single "Hold You Down," to suggest that hard work on songwriting might be rewarded. ~ Steve Huey

DRILL TEAM self titled EP 1996

 By request
Thanks to Kevin C. for the upload.

Upon its release in 1996, Drill Team's four-song debut seemed to signify it was an alt-rock band on the verge of something bigger, even though that '90s-era subgenre was already somewhat passé by the time the group arrived on the scene. At the time, Drill Team closely resembled the Smashing Pumpkins in style and substance (if not exactly in its songs), and the folks at Reprise's In Bloomimprint hoped that Drill Team's honeyed, commercially viable tunes would bring them as much success as the Pumpkins had brought to Virgin worldwide. Drill Team was paired up with Midwest-based producer Keith Cleversley, who had already created magic with Spiritualized, the Flaming Lips, and Mercury Rev, among others, and the two tracks that resulted from that alliance -- "Pluto My Cream" and "Drippin" -- were, indeed, the better efforts. Lead vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Michael Long's soporific, whisper-soft vocals and fuzz-dripping stratospheric guitars are simply immersed in Cleversley's sonic frippery. The other two tracks went for the same effect, albeit with lesser results. Things went into a downturn after the release of this EP, however. Rhythm guitarist Chris Etzer left the band due to personality conflicts with Long. Then, Reprise sent Drill Team off on an experimental regional U.S. tour that saw the band playing a few cities over and over for weeks on end (how annoying it must have been for the people of Dallas or Boston who simply wanted the band to leave town!). When Drill Team's long-awaited full-length debut arrived, Hope and Dream Explosion turned out to be somewhat aptly named, as the group's hopes and dreams did just that. The inner band strife continued, and drummer Jim Mills and Long's longtime friendship finally, if not abruptly, came to an end. Perhaps Mills had the right idea all along, hiding under the moniker "Sowbug Lord" (and later calling himself "Apollo Strange"). After Drill Team's demise, the bandmembers went their separate ways. Michael Long formed a new band, Army, in 2000. ~ Bryan Thomas

POSTER CHILDREN RTFM 1997

Biography

by Heather Phares
Poster Children are a high-energy punk-pop band that formed in 1987 in Champaign, IL. Playing what they call "post wave" music, their three full-length releases illustrate why they have a die-hard cult following: their ability to write hard yet melodic songs and their do-it-yourself philosophy, which includes driving their own tour bus, creating all of their own artwork and T-shirt designs, and having their own record label. A longtime college favorite, Poster Children continue to gain fans with each hyperkinetic release, including 1990's Daisychain Reaction, 1993's Tool of the Man, 1997's RFTM, and 2000's DDD.

JUDGE NOTHING I'm a Big Girl Now 1996

Biography

by Mike DaRonco
Purposed as a way to kill the suburban boredom brought on by their Midwestern town of Alton, Illinois, Judge Nothing wanted to liven things up a bit when they got together in 1988. Seven years of demos and due paying would follow before their first album I'm A Big Girl Now made up for all their thankless touring and hard work. Released in 1995 on Thick Records, Judge Nothing's partnership with this label continued with the follow-up Riveter in 1996. However, not too long after their picture seven inch split with All in 1997, everyone went their separate ways the following year.

LIARS INC. Enemy 2000

Discogs

Biography

by Roxanne Blanford
Liars Inc. is a quartet from Los Angeles, CA, which can best be described as having been born of compelling contradictions and obstacles. Lead singer Raile grew up in Hollywood where his mother worked as a stylist to stars who often slept on her living room floor following all-night parties and whom Raile had to step over as he went to school. As he matured, Raile became frustrated, jaded, and disillusioned. He was then encouraged by his longtime friend Robin Diaz to start up a band as a means to lend focus and voice to his profound perceptions. Always the optimist, Diaz's life view created a balance for the more pessimistic Raile. It wasn't long before enigmatic bass player Dillinger and Ray Hartman, an uprooted Scranton, PA, native, came on board to form Liars Inc. Their debut, Superjaded, was released in 1998.

LIFTER Melinda 1996

By request

Biography

by Michael Sutton
In 1996, the Los Angeles band Lifter called the attention of radio programmers with a song about moving back home and mowing the lawn for dad. The song, "402," became an anthem for twentysomethings frustrated by the loneliness and financial instability of living alone. The track could have catapulted Lifter into the superstar status of other loud alternative rock groups such as Everclear and the Foo Fighters. However, the band became lost in a market overstocked on young groups with fuzzy guitars and angry, introspective lyrics. Lifter formed in 1992 with Mike Coulter (vocals, guitar), Jeff Sebelia (bass), and John Rozas (drums). Lifter released several singles on independent labels like Fingerpaint and Triple X. Before agreeing to sign the band, Interscope Records sent Coulter to rehab to rid him of his addiction to heroin. In 1996, Lifter released their debut album, Melinda (Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt), on Interscope Records. The LP was named after Coulter's …  » Read more

ASHTRAY BOY Macho Champions 1994

Discogs

Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Ashtray Boy is two indie pop bands in one: the first existed in Chicago, the other -- simultaneously -- in Sydney, Australia. Both were led by vocalist Randall Lee, formerly of the Cannanes and Nice; after the latter's 1993 demise, Lee began splitting his time between his native Australia and the U.S., and the first Ashtray Boy lineup formed was the American version, rounded out by future Pulsars member Dave Trumfio and drummer Justin Niimi. Their 1993 full-length, The Honeymoon Suite (featuring backing vocals from Liz Phair), was the first release issued under the name, while 1994's Macho Champions featured material from the Chicago unit as well as the Sydney group, which also featured bassist Thomas Tallis and drummer Neil Johnston. Candypants Beach, issued the following year, and 1996's The Everyman's 4th Dimension were also joint ventures from both Ashtray Boy rosters. In 2002, Lee left Australia for Vancouver B.C., where he set about putting together a Canadian lineup as well.
