Formed in 1992, pop combo Papas Fritas began as a power trio when two high-school friends from Delaware, guitarist Tony Goddess and drummer Shivika Asthana, met up with bassist Keith Gendel while attending Tufts University in Massachusetts. The three recorded and released four-track albums for fun and performed at parties on and around campus, but never took the group seriously until a tape fell onto the desk of small record label Sunday Driver Records and the label approached Papas Fritas with plans to release a 7" of the group's work. The band consented and released Friday Night with the label in February of 1994. For the first time in their history, the members of Papas Fritas promoted their music and found more interest in their work from another small indie, though notably larger than Sunday Driver, Minty Fresh. Through Minty Fresh, Papas Fritas found a home to allow some growth. They tossed aside the four-track, built a more functional studio in their basement, and recorded their first effort for Minty Fresh, another 7" titled Passion Play/Lame to Be, in 1995. Both songs on the single served as the cornerstones to their first full-length, Papas Fritas, released later that same year.

The group set out on tour for a great deal of 1995 and part of 1996, including a European jaunt with the Flaming Lips, but still found time to record their second full-length, Helioself, which saw release in 1997. Papas Fritas continued to gather steam, touring even more throughout 1997 with the likes of the Cardigans (while that group was enjoying major chart success), the Eels, Blur, and others. They fell somewhat quiet during 1998 and 1999, touring little, but commenced work on their third album, Buildings and Grounds, and released it in 2000 to favorable reviews. Another massive tour followed, but just before they hit the road, the trio decided to add two members, keyboardist Donna Coppola and guitarist Chris Colthart (both members of the Faraway Places), to their lineup. Again Papas Fritas went quiet until Pop Has Freed Us, a compilation bearing nine unreleased tracks alongside four videos and eight tracks collected from their catalog, was released in 2003.

Seattle rockers My Sister's Machine first appeared in early '90s, riding the wave of grunge into the mainstream and a record deal despite their relatively short existence. Vocalist Nick Pollock had played the guitar in Alice in Chains in the '80s, and remained in the close-knit Seattle metal scene that included those two bands as well as Gruntruck and Screaming Trees. The band also consisted of guitarist Owen Wright, bassist Chris Ivanovich, and drummer Chris Gohde. After two unheralded albums, they called in quits in 1994. Pollock would go on to form Tanks of Zen in the late '90s.

THE BLACK SORROWS Harley and Rose 1990

Joe Camilleri, the man behind the Black Sorrows, is one of Australia's most talented artists. Camilleri started during the '60s with bands such as the King Bees and Adderley Smith Blues Band. His reputation grew during the '70s after appearing with Lipp and the Double Dekker Brothers and the Pelaco Brothers, but it wasn't until he formed Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons in 1975 that he achieved national fame. Renowned for their live performances, they released several albums and singles before breaking up in 1983. Camilleri formed the Black Sorrows the next year.
They began playing semi-acoustic sets around Melbourne and released several laid-back albums which consisted of Van Morrison, John Lee Hooker, and Ray Peterson covers, as well as originals. The album Dear Children marked a change in fortune for the Black Sorrows. After being issued independently, it was picked up by CBS and peaked at number 18 on the Australian national charts. Backing singers Vika and Linda Bull further distinguished the Black Sorrows sound, and they released Hold On to Me, which peaked at number six on the national charts in May 1989. It stayed on the Australian charts for over a year, sold over 250,000 copies and 150,000 copies when released in the U.S. and Europe. the Black Sorrows won Best Group at the 1989 Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Awards.
Harley and Rose was released in November 1990 and several overseas tours followed. During May 1992, the Black Sorrows performed at the Wizards of Oz gigs in Los Angeles with several other major Australian acts. Harley and Rose sold over 200,000 copies; a feat repeated by their next release, Better Times. In between Black Sorrows' obligations, Camilleri released Amazing Stories with his part-time band, the Revelators, later made available as a limited-edition pack with Better Times. In 1993, the Black Sorrows released the EPs Sweet Inspiration and Stir It Up before Camilleri dismantled the band and re-formed it as a solo act with supporting musicians.
In 1994, Camilleri traveled to New York to record Lucky Charm and contributed a cover of Country Radio's "Gypsy Queen" for the various artists compilation Earth Music. In December 1995, Camilleri released the EP All Saints Hotel, his first solo outing since the 1989 "Angel Dove" single. All Saints Hotel contained a zydeco reworking of Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run," which had been destined to be the first Jo Jo Zep single in 1975.
In 1996, the Black Sorrows released the triple live album Radio Waves, consisting of 36 tracks. Also released was The Black Sorrows box set containing the albums Sonola, Rockin' Zydeco, Dear Children, and A Place in the World, plus Not for Production, a collection of 11 rare, never-released tracks. A new EP was released in 1997, New Craze.

Elastic Purejoy Review

The Elastic Purejoy seem to suffer from a severe Sebadoh complex -- they cross back and forth between noisy, turgid rock songs and tuneful pop songs. They cover "Soul and Fire." There is an occasional hook. But much of this record is too unformed to make an impression -- the occasional hook is never followed up on, and there's too much clutter underlying the record as a whole. A band like Sebadoh can get away with gross inconsistency in their songwriting because when the songwriting works, it's spectacular -- the good parts of The Elastic Purejoy, on the other hand, aren't quite good enough to atone for the remainder.

Anthony Penaloza, better known by his stage name Gus Black, (formerly known as Gus) is an American singer-songwriter and producer from Los Angeles; affiliated with ASCAP (IPI #479906693).

He signed to Almo Sounds, a subsidiary of A&M Records, and released two albums on the label, 1996's Gus and 1999's Word of Mouth Parade. The label disbanded in 2000. Since then, Black has released 3 albums, all of which were released internationally before seeing domestic distribution. His album "Autumn Days" was selected by iTunes as Top 10 "Best Indie Singer/Songwriter" releases of 2006. The 2008 release "Today Is Not The Day..." was critically acclaimed in Europe.

He produced a hit cover of the popular Blue Öyster Cult song "Don't Fear the Reaper" for the Scream soundtrack. The same cover was also featured at the end of the 19th episode of season 2 of Smallville, and in the horror film The Howling: Reborn. His cover of "Paranoid" appeared on the Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder episode of the TV show Californication. His work has been featured in several other TV shows as well, including: Alias, Brothers and Sisters, One Tree Hill, and Grey's Anatomy.
