TUSCADERO The Pink Album 1994

by request

Artist Biography by

Tuscadero was one of a legion of cutesy punk-pop bands to emerge in the mid-'90s. Taking their inspiration from '70s junk culture and sugar-coated childhoods, the Washington DC-based quartet crafted punk-pop paens to television (they took their name from Suzi Quatro's Happy Days character Leather Tuscadero), teenage crushes and problems with parents. Led by Meilssa Farris (vocals, guitar) and Margaret McCartney (vocals, guitar), Tuscadero built up a cult following in the indie-rock underground with their first two albums -- The Pink Album (1994) and Step Into My Wiggle Room (1995) -- for the DC-based TeenBeat Records. Elektra Records signed the band in 1996, and the group's major label debut was a remixed and partially re-recorded version of The Pink Album which appeared later that summer. Tuscadero's first album recorded specifically for Elektra, My Way or the Highway, was released in the spring of 1998.

SATCHEL The Family 1996

Satchel Biography by Greg Prato

Just about every rock & roller nowadays lists '70s rock as a major influence, but few rockers are down with the misunderstood genius Prince. Unlike others, though, Satchel has no problem admitting their worship of the Purple One (vocalist Shawn Smith in particular, who explores his Prince fixation even more in his two-man side project Pigeonhed).

Satchel's roots lay in the band Brad, which was originally put together as a one-shot side project for Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard. It was essentially an excuse for a group of friends to unwind and make music for the sheer fun of it. After releasing the album Shame in 1992, Gossard returned to Pearl Jam, while drummer Regan Hagar and singer Smith decided to form a permanent band. After hooking up with guitarist John Hoag and bassist Cory Kane, the newly named Satchel (originally called Bliss) secured a record deal with Epic Records. Their debut, EDC, was released in 1994, and was an unfortunately overlooked masterpiece. The band toured relentlessly, and soon bassist Kane exited, with his replacement being Mike Berg. The album didn't sell in vast quantities as hoped, so the band regrouped and began writing their next one.

Stone Gossard was signed on to co-produce their next album, and the resulting The Family (released in 1996) was a surprisingly mellower affair than the debut. Satchel again embarked on a long tour, and again their album went unnoticed (even an opening slot on an Afghan Whigs tour didn't help). By tour's end, Gossard expressed interest in re-forming Brad with Smith and Hagar, and in contrast to Brad's debut, this time they would tour. The group accepted, and Hoag promptly quit Satchel. Brad's superb Interiors received glowing reviews upon its spring 1997 release. And although the album wasn't a smash, the group obtained a loyal fan base, who made the tour a sold-out success. Brad bassist Jeremy Toback was unable to tour (even though he played on the record), so Satchel bassist Berg stepped in for the duration. This left the future of Satchel up in the air, along with Hoag's exit and the fact that many fans felt Brad should become a permanent band, putting out albums and touring on a regular basis.

OPPOSITION Blue Alice Blue 1990

by request

Artist Biography by

Breaking the Silence
The Opposition were a South London-based post-punk band that welded the impassioned urgency of early Killing Joke to the graceful but pained atmospheric flourishes of the Chameleons. Marcus Bell, Mark Long, and Ralph Hall formed the band in 1979 and had their first single, Very Little Glory, released through their own Double Vision imprint by the end of that year. A short-lived deal with the Ariola label (Japan) produced a second single in 1980 that led to a contract with Disc AZ. Breaking the Silence, the band's self-produced debut full-length, was released in 1981. Three LPs for Charisma -- Intimacy, Promises, and Empire Days -- followed in close succession between 1983 and 1985. A lengthy hiatus for the group ensued after that, and Long and Bell splintered off to record slick pop as So, a side project of sorts that spawned a minor hit in 1988 with "Are You Sure." The Opposition resumed for 1990s Blue Alice Blue and 1993's War Begins at Home prior to breaking up. The Netherlands-based Red Sun label issued Breaking the Silence on CD in 2001 with boosted sound and bonus tracks. The group also convened for a third time and released a new album in 2002.

THE DEADLY SNAKES Love Undone 1999

by request

Artist Biography by

The Deadly Snakes are a rock & roll band. Formed by a group of Toronto friends, the Snakes quickly gained local attention for their recklessly fun live shows. André St. Clair (vocals, guitar), Max Danger (organ, piano), Matt "Dog" Carlson (trumpet, harmonica), Yuri Didrichsons (bass), Andrew Gunn (drums), and Carson Binks (saxophone) first began playing together in 1996. Their adrenaline-charged '60s Southern soul remained authentic enough to escape pretensions and build a small following. After playing a concert in Memphis, they appropriately harnessed Greg Oblivian to produce their debut LP. By the time the Snakes had started recording, James Sayce had replaced Didrichsons on bass duties. Released on Sympathy for the Record Industry in May of 1999, Love Undone was well-received and the supporting tour improved the band's reputation. When it came time for the Snakes to record their follow-up, album Didrichsons had reclaimed the bass position, Jeremi Madsen had replaced Binks on saxophone, and Oblivian joined as an official member. I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore was released on In the Red in August of 2001.
