Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny
The Atlanta alternative band Big Hate was led by singer/guitarist Brian Stanger and his bassist brother Adam, New York natives who formed the group in Florida with drummer Stephan Panas. Upon moving to Georgia, they added guitarist Rusty Cobb; a relentless touring schedule built up their fanbase and also brought Big Hate to the attention of the A&M subsidiary Flip Records, which issued their debut LP You're Soaking in It in 1998.

THE MURMURS self titled 1994
by request
Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny
The alternative pop duo the Murmurs comprised singers/songwriters Leisha Hailey and Heather Grody, who began performing together in 1991 while both were students at New York City's American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Debuting with the self-released Who Are We, the Murmurs quickly attracted a cult following on the East Village club circuit, signing to MCA in 1994 and debuting with a self-titled LP which spawned the novelty hit "You Suck." With the release of 1997's Pristine Smut, the formerly acoustic duo added bassist Sheri Ozeki and drummer Sherri Solinger; Blender followed a year later.

Issuing their debut EP Separate the Magnets in 1998, the group also earned notoriety opening bands including Fugazi, Jimmy Eat World and the Promise Ring; upon signing to Victory Records, in 1999 Grade issued the single "Triumph and Tragedy," followed later that year by the full-length Under the Radar. Embarrassing Past was issued in fall 2000 as well as a shift in band members. Charles Moniz (drums) and Brad Casarin (guitar) replaced Danner and Taylor in time for a sophomore effort, 2001's Headfirst Straight to Hell.

SABALON GLITZ Ufonic 1995
by request
Review by William Tilland
Part of the mid-'90s American post-rock scene which spawned groups like Tortoise, Jessamine, and Labradford, the Chicago-based Sabalon Glitz
quartet creates music superficially of the shoegazer pop and jangle
guitar variety, but rather than being inspired by contemporary guitar
drone groups such as the British My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, or Flying Saucer Attack, Sabalon travels much further back into Kosmiche music history, paying homage to the sounds of early Popul Vuh and Pink Floyd.
There's even a hidden track that reproduces a telephone interview
between one of the band members and Rev. Frank Stranges, in which
Stranges (an apt name) discourses on alien contact and the hollow earth
theory. The twin guitars of Chris Holmes
and Rob Kaeding lay down an impressive wall of guitar noise on
occasion, especially on the dynamic "Superchaismic Nucleus," but the
overall tendency is somewhat more laid-back. The discrete, tasteful use
of a theramin and Moog synthesizer is another plus for the group, and it
not only establishes the group's space music connection, but it also
serves to keep them away from the predictable rut into which some of the
shoegazer groups can so easily fall.

BORN AGAINST Nine Patriotic Hymns For Children 1994
by request
Artist Biography by Paul Kott
Politically aware, always cynical, and powerfully
musical, Born Against brought the passion and restless anger of American
hardcore into the nineties. First active in 1989-90 in New York City,
the band featured vocalist Sam McPheeters and guitarist Adam Nathanson,
as well as a revolving cast of drummers and bassists. (The most solid
lineup included Tonie Jay and Brooks Headley of Universal Order of
Armageddon fame.) Born Against began with the usual round of 7" and
compilation appearances, including a spot on Ebullition's influential
1991 comp Give Me Back. They then issued 9 Patriotic Hymns for Children,
their debut LP, that same year. The Battle Hymns of the Race War 10"
followed; both were released through McPheeters' own Vermiform imprint.
More comp appearances and split releases followed, including a 1994
split with Screeching Weasel for Lookout! Born Against had run its
course by mid-decade, even if its existence had galvanized an NYC
hardcore scene screaming for a voice. But its members soldiered on with
other projects, including McPheeters' Men's Recovery Project and
Nathanson's Young Pioneers. In 2003 Kill Rock Stars stepped in to take
over distribution of the Born Against material, after Vermiform fell on
hard times. Rebel Sound of Shit and Failure compiled nineteen early and
obscure single and flexi releases, while 9 Patriotic Hyms and Battle
Hymns were compiled into one release. In 2004 McPheeters resurfaced with
a new project for KRS called Wrangler Brutes, a manic, hard-charging
thrash/hardcore outfit that also featured drummer Headley and Andy
Coronado (ex-Monorchid). Zulu, their debut, appeared in October '04.
