THE PLEASURE ELITE Bad Juju 1994

by request

Artist Biography

Pleasure Elite were formed in winter 1990 in Seattle, USA, around pseudonymous musicians V. Blast (vocals), Lord Hoop De’ Luv (guitar, vocals, sequencer), the Deacon (keyboards), Razor Monkey (drums) and Father Shark (guitar). Boasting a frenetic live show that won them early supports with KMFDM, Rage Against The Machine, Jesus Jones and Alien Sex Fiend, the band’s lyrical concerns included media manipulation, lust and corruption. They made their debut with Bad Juju in May 1994, an album that delighted in crossing sundry musical frontiers including industrial metal and more traditional rock structures. With production by Pearl Jam associate Don Gilmore, the collection was promoted with the release of a strong attendant single, ‘Media Feed’.

THE ZEROS Knockin' Me Dead 1994

Artist Biography by

Right Now!
Often referred to as "the Mexican Ramones," the Zeros (guitarist and singer Javier Escovedo, second guitarist Robert Lopez, bassist Hector Peñalosa, and drummer Baba Chenelle) were just one of many contributors to the L.A. punk explosion in the late '70s. Although they never received the acclaim of such L.A. peers as Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, or X, the Zeros made admirers out of such renowned artists as Tom Waits, Patti Smith, and the Damned, played numerous West Coast shows with the likes of Dils, Avengers, X, Plugz, Nerves, and Wipers, and even gave the Germs their very first live gig -- opening for them in 1977. The group was first formed in 1976, and were initially known as "the Main Street Brats" -- but by the time of their first show, they had settled on the name the Zeros. Although the quartet broke up in 1981, the Zeros have re-formed sporadically for live shows (such as a 1991 benefit show for ailing punk rocker/writer Craig Lee, and a few years later, Bomp Records' 25th anniversary party), and a full album -- 1999's Right Now! In addition, several of the Zeros' compositions have been covered by other bands around the world, including Spain's La Secta ("Wild Weekend"), Australia's Hoodoo Gurus, Sweden's the Nomads ("Wimp"), and Hollywood's the Muffs ("Beat Your Heart Out").

THE STOOL PIGEONS Rule, Hermania! British Inversion Vol. 1 1996

by request

AllMusic Review by

Being a collection of British Invasion hits done in the style of the Stool Pigeons, it would be easy to roll your eyes and think that this was just another band doing a "tribute record" just so they could hide the fact that they can't write an original tune to save their lives. Proving this to be difficult is in part of Sheryl and Lisa's obnoxiously perky harmonies which fronts the beat of 60's influenced pop. Sure Rule Hermania has some pretty decent covers of "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat," "A Must To Avoid," "I'm Into Something Good" et cetera. Then there's the guest vocals courtesy of Herman's Hermits' frontman Peter Noone singing lead on "Take Live, Give Love," which definitely kicked Rule Hermania up a couple notches.

GAPESEED Project 64 1996

Discogs

Artist Biography by

Formed in the mid-'90s, New York's Gapeseed was guitarist Ed Feldman, drummer Peter Gordon, and bassist Mike Knowlton. With Feldman and Knowlton also on vocals, the trio's dissonant and noisy sound experiments were featured on two discs on California's Silver Girl Records, while garnering attention on the college radio charts. The band first released the Flanzer EP in 1993, and 1994 saw the band's full-length debut, Lo Cell, on Silver Girl. The band's reputation soon led to new opportunities, as producer Bob Weston was tapped to record the follow-up, 1996's Project 64. Poem Rocket's Sandra Gardner also sang guest vocals on the disc, as the band continued to intrigue and amaze its mostly underground, indie rock audience. That disc featured 11 uniquely structured tracks, featuring frantic overtones and wild sonic experiments. Soon after the disc's release, the group disbanded.
